Planning a wedding in Montepulciano

Though planning a wedding can be daunting, you can transform your Italian wedding dreams into reality with expertise. Here’s a step-by-step guide to planning a wedding in Montepulciano.

Find your perfect venue

The first step in planning your wedding in Montepulciano is finding the right venue. Whether you’re looking for a rustic farmhouse, a grand villa, or a historic castle, Montepulciano has a venue to suit every style and budget. Take your time to research and visit different venues to find the perfect one for you.

Hire your vendors

Once you’ve found your venue, it’s time to start hiring your vendors. It includes your caterer, florist, photographer, and any other vendors you may need. Make sure to choose vendors with experience working with international couples who understand the unique requirements of a destination wedding.

Get the legal requirements in order

Getting married in Italy involves some paperwork and logistics, but don’t worry – it’s doable! You’ll need to obtain a Nulla Osta (Certificate of No Impediment) from your local embassy or consulate and other documents like your birth certificate and passport. Starting this process early is crucial to ensure everything is in order before your wedding day.

Plan your celebration

Finally, it’s time to plan the fun stuff – your wedding celebration! Whether planning a traditional Italian feast or a modern reception with a DJ and dancing, work closely with your vendors to create a celebration that reflects your style and tastes.

So, planning a wedding in Montepulciano may seem daunting, but with the proper preparation and guidance, it can be a stress-free and unforgettable experience. Remember to take your time, enjoy the process, and trust in the magic of this beautiful Tuscan town.

The most popular Montepulciano wedding venues

Choosing the perfect venue is paramount among the critical decisions when organizing a Montepulciano wedding. The town has many beautiful and unique Montepulciano wedding venues, so it’s essential to consider your budget, guest count, and preferred style. Additionally, it’s vital to consider the logistics of your preferred location. Ask about parking, accessibility, and any restrictions or rules affecting your celebration.

Historic villa

One popular option is to get married in a historic villa. Montepulciano is home to many beautiful villas that offer stunning views of the Tuscan countryside. These villas often have lush gardens and outdoor spaces, perfect for a romantic outdoor ceremony or reception. If you’re looking for a more traditional setting, consider getting married in a historic church or chapel in the heart of Montepulciano’s old town.

Rustic farmhouses

For those looking for a more rustic or country-style wedding in Montepulciano, there are many beautiful farmhouses and agriturismos (farm stays) in the surrounding hills of Montepulciano. These venues often have sprawling vineyards and olive groves, providing a picturesque backdrop for your wedding photos.

Medieval Castle

Imagine exchanging your vows in a grand courtyard surrounded by medieval architecture or hosting your reception in a great hall adorned with chandeliers and tapestries. Many castle venues in Montepulciano offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, making for a truly magical backdrop for your wedding photos.

Some castle venues even offer accommodations for you and your guests, allowing you to stay in a piece of Italian history throughout your wedding weekend. However, remember that castle venues often have a higher price tag and may require more planning and logistics than other venues. Ensure you inquire about any necessary permits, equipment, or services for your wedding.

No matter what type of venue you choose, make sure to visit in person before making a final decision. It will allow you to see the venue’s facilities, meet with the staff, and envision how your wedding day will look.

Montepulciano is perfect for hosting any wedding ceremony

Thousands of guests fall in love with Montepulciano’s landscape, architectural beauty, and cultural events, earning it the nickname “Pearl of the Sixteenth Century” and making it an ideal location for a wedding.

For many years, moreover, the demand to choose Montepulciano wedding venues for the Montepulciano wedding ceremony has grown thanks to the many civil and religious buildings that lend themselves to celebrating the magical wedding day.

EVERY MOMENT TOLD

The best venue for a religious ceremony

If you have fallen in love with the charm of this town and are ready to take the fateful step with your better half, here is a guide to the five best places to get married in Montepulciano!

TEMPLE OF SAN BIAGIO

Probably the most famous monumental building in the town, the Church of San Biagio is considered an example of 16th-century Tuscan Renaissance architecture. Designed by Antonio da Sangallo, the Elder, it stands just outside the historical center of the town, in an isolated position at the end of a long avenue surrounded by cypress trees. Its construction dates back to 1518, over an ancient early Christian church; it has a Greek cross plan with symmetrical arms that meet in a dome of 13 meters in diameter. Here it is possible to celebrate a wedding in Montepulciano Tuscany with a Catholic rite.

CHURCH OF JESUS

This church is perhaps not as well-known as the others, but it is one of the fascinating choices for a Montepulciano wedding ceremony. It is located along the historic center, nestled between buildings and narrow alleys, but has easy access to the side and convenient parking. Andrea Pozzo designed the building between 1691 and 1712, constructing it over the old Jesuit college that had settled in Montepulciano in the sixteenth century. The walls inside the building have alternating protruding and receding surfaces typical of Baroque aesthetics, and the interior has an elliptical plan. In the church, the sanctuary is built for the devotion of the “Three Hail Marys,” making it one of the area’s most important places of love.

CATHEDRAL OF SANTA MARIA ASSUNTA

The Montepulciano Cathedral is next to the Palazzo Comunale in Piazza Grande. They constructed the building in the 16th and 17th centuries to replace the ancient parish church of Santa Maria. Although the facade remains incomplete, the interior contains many works of art that can embellish your luxury Montepulciano wedding ceremony. The architecture is austere and elegant, of Florentine inspiration, with a Latin cross plan divided into three naves. On the altar dominates the Triptych of the Assumption painted by Taddeo di Bartolo. Still worthy of note are the Funeral Monument of Bartolomeo Aragazzi, a bronze sculpture by Michelozzo, and the Altar of Lilies by Andrea Della Robbia.

CHURCH OF SANT’AGNESE

The Church of Sant’Agnese, also available for religious ceremonies of weddings in Montepulciano, is located in the lower part of Montepulciano, outside the walls of the historic center and easily accessible from the adjacent parking lots. It hosts the Sanctuary of Agnese Segni, the saint from Pistoia who chose this hill to build her church, whose primitive version was enlarged in 1311 and radically restructured in the 17th century. The building still has the fourteenth-century portal on the outside; inside is a single nave with a barrel vault. Behind the altar, they keep the urn containing the body of Sant’Agnese in precious marble. Next to the sanctuary stands the convent of the Dominican fathers who officiate at the church, with a monumental cloister frescoed with scenes from the saint’s life.

MUNICIPAL PALACE

We suggest the Palazzo Comunale in the magnificent Piazza Grande if you opt for a wedding in Montepulciano with a civil ceremony. They built the Palazzo between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and people appreciate its Florentine-style facade, which they attribute to Michelozzo. They still use it as the seat of administrative offices.

It is possible to use the Sala Della Giunta for luxury Tuscan wedding moments. It is also advisable to visit the civic tower that dominates the facade, from which it is possible to gaze at the splendid landscapes of Valdichiana and Val d’Orcia.

Entertainment and activities during your Montepulciano wedding week

Montepulciano is located between the Valdichiana Senese and the Val d’Orcia, making it an excellent base for excursions to other surrounding areas, such as Umbria and Florence, or even Rome, if you wish after your wedding celebrations.

Wine tasting and Tuscan gastronomy experience

It is only possible to leave after a wedding in Montepulciano by tasting Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which, together with Rosso di Montepulciano and Vin Santo, is the heir of centuries of traditions. The Etruscans developed the winemaking culture in these lands, refined over millennia to reach a perfect balance of taste, color, and aroma.

There are many opportunities to visit wineries, deepen your knowledge of local products with wine tasting in the cellars (some monumental ones), or use local wines during your wedding reception in Montepulciano Tuscany. If you want to fully experience all the Tuscan gastronomy during your wedding in Montepulciano, you cannot miss: pici all’aglione or “with crumbs”, panzanella, Chianina steak and Cinta Senese cold cuts; and to finish, crostata with mascine plum jam, cantucci, panforte and ricciarelli.

Exploring the lake of Montepulciano

Walking, biking, trekking: You can explore the most authentic Tuscany from this lake—a natural paradise for vacations after your wedding in Montepulciano, among paths and naturalistic oasis. Just outside the walls of the historical center, the lake of Montepulciano is the right destination: the basin is at the center of a protected nature reserve of 470 hectares established in 1996, where you can practice many activities, from ecological boat trips to bird watching, as well as mountain bike tours.

To be noticed is the Sentiero della bonifica (land reclamation path), followed by a bike along the Canale Maestro Della Chiana, a journey through time from the Etruscan civilization to the construction of the work by the hydraulic engineers of Grand Duke Leopold of Tuscany.

Relax at the thermal baths of Montepulciano

After your luxury wedding in Montepulciano, the relaxation also passes through the sulfurous waters containing sodium chloride, bromide, and iodide, of which this corner of Tuscany is rich. Their properties (useful in therapies for respiratory, arthro-rheumatic, and skin diseases), known for centuries, are exploited in the Terme di Montepulciano, which also offers numerous wellness treatments, including massages, baths in the Grotta Lunare, aromatic essences, lights, and music.
