As a destination wedding photographer, my job is to capture that depth. I’ve noticed that American couples are moving away from the traditional, rigid wedding formats of the past and leaning into what we call “Slow Luxury”. This isn’t about being flashy; it’s about quality, intentionality, and taking the time to enjoy your guests and the surroundings. It’s about a three-day celebration where you actually get to talk to your family, eat incredible food, and watch the sun set over the Mediterranean without checking your watch every five minutes. 

Making it legal the paperwork dance for US citizens

I know, I know—the word “paperwork” is the least romantic thing you can hear when you’re thinking about your wedding day. But if you want a civil or religious ceremony that is legally recognized back home in the US, there are some steps we have to get right. The good news is that people do this every single day, and with a little bit of organization, it’s completely manageable.   

The foundation of a legal marriage in Italy for Americans involves a few key documents that prove who you are and that you are free to marry. First, you need your valid US passports. Then, you need certified long-form copies of your birth certificates, which must include the names of both your parents. These birth certificates need to be legalized with an Apostille stamp from the Secretary of State in the state where you were born. This Apostille is an international certification that tells the Italian authorities your document is the real deal.   

Once you have your birth certificates, they need to be translated into Italian. But here is a tip: don’t just use a random online translator. Most town halls in Italy require translations to be certified by the local court or the Italian consulate. If you have been married before, you will also need to provide evidence that the marriage has ended, such as a final divorce decree or a death certificate, also with an Apostille and translation. 

The Atto Notorio and the Dichiarazione Giurata

For US citizens, there are two specific declarations that are the heart of the legal process. The first is the Atto Notorio. This is an affidavit where four witnesses—who can’t be related to you—swear before an Italian consul or a court official that there are no legal obstacles to your marriage. My advice? Do this at an Italian consulate in the US before you even get on the plane. It will save you a lot of time and potential stress once you arrive in Italy, as court appointments here can be hard to come by.   

The second is the Dichiarazione Giurata, or the Nulla Osta. This is a sworn statement you make at the US Embassy or one of the Consulates General in Italy (Milan, Florence, Rome, or Naples). You basically state that under the laws of your home state, you are legally able to marry. You’ll need to make an appointment for this at least a month in advance. After you sign it, you take it to the local Prefettura to have the signature legalized with a revenue stamp called a marca da bollo. It sounds like a lot of running around, but most of my couples find that they can get it all done in a couple of days if they plan ahead. 

A note on the 300 day rule

There is a bit of an old-school law in Italy that sometimes catches my American brides off guard. According to Article 89 of the Italian Civil Code, a woman who has been divorced or widowed must wait at least 300 days before she can marry again in Italy. This was originally meant to avoid any confusion about paternity if a child was born shortly after the marriage. If you fall into this window, don’t worry—you can often get a waiver from a judge, or you might choose to do the legal bit in the US and have a gorgeous symbolic ceremony here. Many of the weddings I shoot are symbolic, and honestly, they feel just as real and emotional as the legal ones.

The Amalfi Coast is where the mountains meet the sea in the most dramatic way possible. Towns like Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello are built into the cliffs, offering views that will literally take your breath away. It is a place of vibrant colors—the blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the yellow of the lemons, and the pastel houses piled on top of each other.   

Working here requires a bit of local knowledge, which is why having an experienced team is so important. The logistics can be tricky—there are a lot of stairs, and the roads are narrow. But the payoff is worth it. Whether it’s a ceremony at the historic Salone Morelli in Amalfi or a reception at a luxury hotel in Ravello, the backdrop is cinema. I always tell my couples to build their timeline around the light here, as the sun can disappear behind the cliffs earlier than you might think. 

Puglia the soul of the Mediterranean

It is a place where every corner has a story, and as a photographer in Rome, I never get tired of finding new perspectives in the Eternal City. From the grand palazzos like Villa Aurelia to the hidden courtyards of the Trastevere neighborhood, Rome offers a level of urban sophistication that is unparalleled.   

Rome is a great choice for weddings year-round. The winter light in Rome is crisp and golden, and there is something incredibly romantic about the city when the crowds have thinned out. We can wander through the ruins of the Appian Way for your portraits or capture the energy of the grand piazzas at night. Rome is big, busy, and beautiful—just like a great love story.   

Lake Garda a refined secret

While everyone knows Lake Como, Lake Garda is a bit of a refined secret that I always love to share. It is the largest lake in Italy and offers a huge variety of settings, from medieval castles overlooking the water to lush vineyards in the rolling hills. It is a bit more laid-back than Como, but just as elegant.   

As a wedding photographer Lake Garda, I find that the light here has a different quality—it’s a bit more open and expansive. Towns like Sirmione or Malcesine offer historic charm and incredible views, and the region is known for its world-class wines and olive oils. It’s a perfect choice for couples who want that Italian lake experience with a slightly different flavor.

Logistics like transportation and accommodation are key. In regions like Tuscany or Puglia, renting a large villa or a Masseria where everyone can stay together is a fantastic way to create an intimate, communal atmosphere. It allows people to bond over breakfast by the pool and shared dinners under the stars. If you are in a more urban area like Rome or Florence, choosing a hotel that is central to the celebrations will make everything easier for everyone.

What to expect in terms of investment for 2026

I want to be transparent with you about the costs, because I know that budgeting is a big part of the planning process. Italy is one of the most popular wedding destinations in the world, and for good reason, but that means it’s not a “budget-friendly” option in the traditional sense.   

For a premium, luxury celebration with 50 to 80 guests in 2026, most of my couples are investing between €80,000 and €180,000. This covers everything from a stunning venue and world-class catering to master-level photography and custom floral design. If you are looking at more intimate gatherings of 20 to 30 people, you might see budgets around €35,000 to €45,000. And for those who want to elope with just the two of them, you can create a magical experience for anywhere from €6,500 to €15,000.   

The biggest expenses are usually the venue and the catering. In Italy, food is more than just a meal—it’s an event. A traditional Italian wedding banquet can have multiple courses, and the quality of the ingredients is paramount. When it comes to photography, you are investing in your legacy. After the cake is eaten and the flowers have faded, your photos and your video are what will keep those memories alive for decades to come.

One of the biggest trends is “Slow Luxury.” It’s about being intentional with your time and your resources. It means fewer guests but more depth. It means spending more on a few incredible details rather than trying to do everything at once. I am seeing more “story menus” where the food reflects the couple’s relationship, and “artisan activations” like a local leather maker creating personalized luggage tags for guests on the spot.   

Another trend is the rise of the wedding content creator. While I am there to capture the high-end, editorial images that will go on your walls and in your albums, a content creator captures the fun, behind-the-scenes moments for your social media. It’s a great way to let your guests put their phones away and just be present in the moment while still having plenty of content to share later.   

Finally, we are seeing a return to nature. Whether it’s an “English Garden” style floral design or a ceremony deep in a vineyard, couples want to feel a connection to the environment. This fits perfectly with the Italian landscape, where the beauty of the surroundings is already so present.
