I love the Amalfi Coast and Lake Como—they are breathtaking—but they come with a high price tag simply because of the demand. If you are willing to look just a little bit further, you will find hidden gems that offer the same beauty for a fraction of the cost.   

Puglia: The Heart of Authentic Simplicity

If you want a vibe that is relaxed, rustic, and incredibly stylish, you have to look at Puglia. As an Apulia wedding photographer, I can tell you that this region is a dream for couples who want high value. Puglia is famous for its “masserie”—traditional fortified farmhouses that have been turned into gorgeous boutique resorts.   

The thing about Puglia is that the light is different there. As a photographer in Umbria, I often shoot in the Val d’Orcia, but I find that some of my most beautiful and soul-stirring work comes from the quiet corners of Umbria. Venues like Tenuta San Masseo near Assisi offer views that are just as powerful as anything in Chianti, but the regional costs for catering and rentals are generally lower. It’s a smart way to get the classic Italian aesthetic while staying within your means.

Sicily: A World within an Island

Sicily is currently having a major moment, and for good reason. It offers a mix of dramatic landscapes, incredible Baroque architecture, and beaches that will take your breath away. The best part? Sicily can be very budget-friendly if you avoid the main tourist hubs like Taormina during the peak summer months.   

A wedding in Sicily is a sensory explosion. The food is some of the best in the world, and because the island has such a rich agricultural history, you can have a feast for a very reasonable price. I love shooting there because every corner tells a story, from the ancient ruins to the colorful markets. If you want a wedding that feels like a glamorous adventure, Sicily is the place.

In the US, most people want to get married in June or September. It’s the same in Italy, and that is why those months are the most expensive. If you want to save money without compromising on the experience, you have to be clever about your date.   

The Magic of the Shoulder Season

I always suggest that my couples look at the “shoulder seasons”—April, May, and October. The weather during these months is often perfect for a wedding: warm and sunny, but without the oppressive heat of July and August. From a photographer’s perspective, this is when the light is most beautiful. The sun is lower in the sky, creating a soft, golden glow that is much more flattering than the harsh midday sun of summer.   

Beyond the light, you will find that venues and vendors are much more flexible with their pricing during these months. You are also competing with fewer tourists, which means you can get those iconic shots at the Spanish Steps or in a Tuscan vineyard without hundreds of strangers in the background.

If you are really looking for a bargain, don’t ignore the winter. Getting married in Rome in November or December is one of the best-kept secrets in the industry. As a photographer in Rome, I can tell you that the city takes on a completely different mood in the winter—it’s cozy, dramatic, and incredibly romantic.   

The costs for venues in Rome or Florence can drop significantly in the off-season. Plus, you don’t have to worry about a “Plan B” for rain as much because you will likely be planning for an indoor celebration in a magnificent Renaissance palace anyway. Think of rich velvet, candlelit dinners, and deep red wines—it’s a sophisticated vibe that feels very high-end for a lower price.

Catering and Gastronomy: How to Feast for Less

In Italy, the meal is the most important part of the wedding day. It isn’t just a dinner; it’s a social event that can last four or five hours. But that doesn’t mean it has to be the most expensive part of your budget if you know how to order.   

The Secret Power of the Aperitivo

The “Grand Aperitivo” is your best friend when you are on a budget. This is the extended cocktail hour that happens after the ceremony. In a traditional Italian wedding, the aperitivo is so massive that it can almost replace a full meal. It usually features stations of local cheeses, cured meats, fried specialties, and seasonal vegetables.   

If you have a very large and impressive aperitivo, you can then move to a seated dinner with just two courses—a pasta (primo) and a main (secondo)—followed by the cake. Pasta is iconic, delicious, and very affordable. By focusing on high-quality, local staples, you provide your guests with a “Michelin-style” experience without the price of a formal tasting menu. 

Why Local Wine is Always the Answer

Don’t bother importing expensive champagne or famous French labels. Italy has some of the best wines in the world, and they are cheapest when they are local. If you are in Tuscany, serve a local Chianti. If you are in Puglia, go with a Primitivo. These wines are often exceptional and cost much less than what you would pay for them in the US.   

Also, skip the open bar for the entire night if you need to save. In Italy, it is perfectly normal to have wine and beer flow freely during the meal, and then open a cocktail bar for just two or three hours during the dancing. This controls the cost while still ensuring everyone has a great time.

Logistics and Planning: Avoiding the American “Hidden” Costs

When you are planning from across the Atlantic, it is easy to miss the small details that can add up. But being aware of them early on can save you a lot of headache.   

Symbolic vs. Legal: Choosing the Stress-Free Path

One of the biggest pieces of advice I give my US couples is to consider a symbolic ceremony in Italy. A legal wedding in Italy involves a lot of paperwork—the “Nulla Osta,” the “Atto Notorio,” translation fees, and trips to the consulate. It can be slow, expensive, and stressful.   

Most of my clients choose to have a quiet “paperwork day” at their local courthouse in the States before they fly out. This means that when they get to Italy, they can have their ceremony anywhere they want—in a vineyard, on a cliff, or in a private garden—without any of the legal restrictions. It makes the day about your vows and your love, not about bureaucracy.   

The “Invisible” Fees: IVA and SIAE

In Italy, the sales tax is called IVA, and it is 22%. Often, quotes from vendors will be “plus IVA,” so you need to make sure you are calculating that into your final numbers. Another mandatory fee is the SIAE license, which is a tax you pay to play music at your event. It usually costs between €300 and €600, and it is a legal requirement. Don’t let these be a surprise on your final bill.   

Transport and the ZTL

If you are getting married in a historic city center like Rome or Florence, you need to be aware of the ZTL—the restricted traffic zones. You cannot just drive a rental car into these areas without a permit, or you will face heavy fines. This is why I always recommend hiring an “NCC”—a licensed professional driver. They have the permits to take you exactly where you need to go, ensuring you aren’t stressed about parking or fines on your wedding day.   

Why Your Photographer is an Investment, Not an Expense

Your wedding photos are the only thing that will last forever. Long after the food is eaten and the music has stopped, your photos will be how you relive those moments. Especially for a destination wedding, where not everyone you love might be able to travel, your photos are how you share the story with the people back home.

Instead of an expensive rehearsal dinner at a high-end restaurant, why not host a “Welcome Pizza Party” at your villa?. It’s relaxed, everyone loves pizza, and it sets a great, casual tone for the weekend. You can also provide your guests with a “Local Guide”—your favorite coffee spots, the best gelato shop, and tips on how to use the trains. Making them feel like they are “in the know” is a luxury that doesn’t cost a cent.

The Lakes: Elegance on a Budget?

Many couples think Lake Como is completely out of reach. But as a Lake Como wedding photographer, I have seen couples do it beautifully on a budget by choosing smaller boutique hotels or “agriturismi” further up the hills. You can have your ceremony at the town hall in Bellagio or Varenna, which is very affordable, and then take a private boat for your portraits. It gives you all the glamour of the lake without the price of a private villa.
