Same sex marriage Amalfi Coast

From legal civil unions to symbolic elopements, explore the ultimate guide to LGBTQ+ weddings on the Amalfi Coast. Creamy colors & natural posing.

Ciao! I am Emiliano Russo. If you are reading this, you are probably daydreaming about a place where the mountains dive straight into a turquoise sea, where the air smells like lemon blossoms, and where every corner feels like a movie set. But more than that, you are looking for a place where your love—your specific, unique love story—can be celebrated without filters, without judgment, and with a lot of Italian heart.

For years, I’ve walked these vertical streets with my camera, and I’ve seen the Amalfi Coast transform. It’s no longer just a destination for traditional, “standard” weddings. Since Italy recognized same-sex civil unions in 2016, this coastline has become a sanctuary for the LGBTQ+ community, especially for couples coming from the United States who want something beyond the cookie-cutter experience. You don’t want a “strategic plan” for your wedding; you want a day that feels like you. You want a photographer who doesn’t just “analyze” the light but feels the emotion behind a look or a shared laugh.

In this space, I want to share everything I’ve learned. Not as a textbook, but as a friend who knows where the best light hits at 6:00 PM and which hidden terraces in Positano will make you feel like the only two people on earth. We’ll talk about the towns, the legal bits (which are easier than you think), and how we can capture your story with those creamy, warm colors that make the Mediterranean glow. This is your journey toward a same-sex marriage on the Amalfi Coast, and I’m honored to be part of it.

The Freedom of Creating Your Own Traditions

One thing I love about working with same-sex couples is the lack of “must-dos.” Traditional weddings often carry the weight of centuries-old expectations—who walks where, who speaks when. But with a same-sex marriage on the Amalfi Coast, we have a blank canvas. I’ve seen couples walk down the aisle together, hand in hand, or meet at the altar from different paths. I’ve seen ceremonies where the “witnesses” were two best friends who have been through everything with the couple.

This freedom is what defines a modern wedding in Amalfi Coast. You aren’t just following a script; you are writing one. Whether you choose a formal civil union recognized by Italian law or a deeply personal symbolic ceremony, the goal is the same: authenticity. As a photographer, my job is to stay out of the way of that authenticity while ensuring that every look of pride from your parents or every tear from your best man is preserved forever.

Italy has moved forward significantly. The law passed in May 2016 (the Cirinnà law) changed the landscape, giving same-sex couples legal rights that mirror marriage in almost every way, from inheritance to next-of-kin status. For my American friends, this means you can have a celebration here that carries real weight. But many choose to handle the paperwork in the US and come here for a “symbolic” celebration, which opens up even more locations—private boats, ruins, or secret gardens that aren’t “official” town hall spots but are incredibly romantic.

Navigating the Bureaucracy Without the Headache

I know, “legal requirements” sounds like the opposite of romance. But if you want a legal civil union in Italy as a US citizen, let’s break it down into human steps. You don’t need to be a legal expert; you just need to be organized.

First, you’ll need a “Dichiarazione Giurata.” This is an affidavit you sign at a US Consulate in Italy (Naples is the closest to the coast). It basically says there’s no legal reason you can’t get married. Then, you need an “Atto Notorio.” You can actually get this done at an Italian Consulate in the US before you even fly over, which I highly recommend to save time.

Once you have these, they need to be legalized at the local “Prefettura.” It sounds like a lot of offices, but a good Amalfi Coast wedding planner can handle the running around while you are enjoying an espresso in the piazza. The ceremony itself is performed by the mayor or a delegate in Italian, so you’ll need an interpreter. It’s a short, meaningful rite that takes about 20 minutes, leaving plenty of time for your own vows and music.

If all that sounds too “official,” remember that a symbolic ceremony has zero paperwork in Italy. You can do the legal part in your home city and then, under the Italian sun, have the “real” wedding that lives in your heart. This is often the path to the most stress-free and visually stunning experiences.

Positano is definitely one of the most enchanting spots in Italy for a wedding.

Positano: The Vertical Theater of Dreams

Positano is the town that everyone recognizes, but few truly know. For a photographer, it is a playground of light and geometry. For a couple, it is a vertical theater where your love is the main event. When people ask me why Amalfi Coast wedding venues in Positano are so popular, I tell them it’s the drama.

The town is built into the cliff. The houses are painted in colors that shouldn’t work together but somehow create a masterpiece—peachy pinks, vibrant yellows, and deep ochres. For your photos, this means we have layers. We can stand on a high terrace like the one at Villa Magia or Il Tridente and see the whole town cascading down behind you. Or we can walk down to the Spiaggia Grande early in the morning, before the ferries arrive, and have the beach to ourselves with the iconic domed church of Santa Maria Assunta in the background.

But my favorite spots are the ones tourists miss. The narrow staircases (yes, there will be stairs!) where the light filters through laundry lines and bougainvillea. These are the places where we get the “natural” shots—the candid moments of you two helping each other over the cobblestones or sharing a quiet kiss in a doorway. Positano isn’t just a place for a wedding; it’s a place for an adventure.

Ravello: Quiet Luxury Above the Clouds

If Positano is the heart, Ravello is the soul. Perched 350 meters above the sea, it is quieter, more refined, and—in my opinion—one of the most romantic places on earth for a same-sex wedding. There is a reason Wagner and Virginia Woolf loved it here. It feels suspended between the sky and the sea.

For your ceremony, Villa Cimbrone is the “crown jewel.” Its “Terrace of Infinity” offers a view that literally makes your breath catch. I’ve photographed many couples standing there, and the sense of peace is palpable. The gardens are filled with statues and ancient stone, giving your wedding photos a timeless, almost ethereal quality. Then there is Palazzo Avino, a pink palace with a history that dates back to the 12th century. It’s the definition of “slow luxury”—it’s not about showing off; it’s about the quality of the light, the taste of the wine, and the feeling of the sea breeze at that altitude.

Ravello is also home to the Town Hall gardens (Giardini della Principessa di Piemonte), which are perfect for a legal civil union. You get the panoramic views of the coast but in a more intimate, garden setting. It’s elegant, it’s historic, and it feels incredibly private.

Amalfi and Atrani: History, Power, and Secret Coves

Amalfi was once a superpower—a maritime republic that rivaled Venice. You can still feel that grandeur when you stand at the bottom of the massive staircase leading up to the Cathedral of Saint Andrew. The striped facade and the Moorish cloister (Chiostro del Paradiso) are architectural wonders. For a photographer, the symmetry and the play of light and shadow in the cloister are a dream.

Just around the corner is Atrani. It is the smallest town in Italy and it feels like a secret. While Amalfi is buzzing with tourists, Atrani remains authentic. It’s a labyrinth of white tunnels and tiny squares. I love taking couples here for a “portrait walk.” It’s quiet, it’s moody, and it provides a beautiful contrast to the bright colors of the other towns.

For staying in this area, the NH Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi is spectacular. It’s a 13th-century monastery built into the side of the mountain. Walking through its original cloister or along its lemon-lined pathways feels like walking through history. It’s one of the most inclusive and welcoming Amalfi Coast wedding venues I’ve worked with, and the staff truly understands how to celebrate same-sex love with grace and luxury.

Praiano: Where the Sun Never Wants to Leave

Praiano is my “secret weapon” as a photographer. Because of its position on the coast, it gets the sun for longer than any other town. While Positano falls into shadow in the late afternoon, Praiano is bathed in golden light until the very last second.

If you are looking for an Amalfi Coast elopement, Praiano offers spots like the Fiordo di Furore—a tiny, dramatic beach tucked under a massive bridge. It’s raw, it’s natural, and it feels completely hidden from the world. Or you could celebrate at La Gavitella, a beach club where you can arrive by boat, have a symbolic ceremony on the rocks, and then watch the sunset over Positano with a glass of prosecco in your hand. It’s youthful, it’s fun, and it captures that “Dolce Vita” energy perfectly.

Praiano is for the couples who want to escape the crowds. It’s for the ones who want to stay at Casa Angelina—a minimalist, all-white hotel that feels like a modern art gallery perched over the sea. The contrast of the white decor against the deep blue water is a photographer’s dream and creates a stunning, clean aesthetic for your wedding album.

My Philosophy: Feelings, Creamy Colors, and Natural Light

I don’t believe in “posing” people. I believe in giving you a reason to interact, and then capturing what happens naturally. If I tell you to “stand there and smile,” the photo will look like a thousand others. But if I tell you to whisper something in your partner’s ear, or we just walk through a lemon grove talking about your favorite memories, the photo will look like you.

Light is my obsession. We have to talk about the “Golden Hour.” In photography, this is the hour before sunset when the light becomes soft, warm, and diffused. It wraps around you, smoothing out the shadows and giving the sea a metallic glow. This is how I achieve my signature “creamy colors.” I want your skin to look luminous and the background to look like a painting.

I always advise my couples to avoid the midday sun. Between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM, the light is harsh, the shadows are deep, and—let’s be honest—it’s very hot. We want to schedule your ceremony and your portraits for when the light is kindest. This not only makes for better photos but also a much more comfortable experience for you and your guests.

Trends for 2025 and 2026: What US Couples are Loving

As we look toward the 2026 season, I’m seeing a beautiful shift in what couples from the USA are requesting. It’s no longer about “the biggest party”; it’s about the most meaningful experience.

  1. The Micro-Wedding (10-25 guests): This is the sweet spot. It allows you to have a high level of luxury—Michelin-starred dining, private boat transfers—because you aren’t trying to feed 200 people. It’s intimate and allows every guest to feel part of the story.
  2. Slow Luxury: This means staying in one place for 4 or 5 days. Not rushing from one town to the next, but truly settling in. It’s about a long lunch under the vines, a morning swim in a hidden grotto, and a wedding day that doesn’t feel like a marathon.
  3. Bespoke Design & Non-Binary Style: I love seeing couples break the “suit and tie” mold. Think lightweight linens, silk blends, or even unconventional colors that match the Mediterranean palette—blues, sage greens, or soft corals. Non-binary rings and accessories that reflect your personal style are becoming the new standard.
  4. Sustainability: Using local lemons and olive branches for decor instead of importing flowers. Choosing caterers who use farm-to-table ingredients. It’s a way of honoring the land that is hosting your celebration.
  5. Interactive Experiences: Instead of just a dinner, why not a cooking class for your guests the day before? Or a vintage Vespa tour along the coast? These moments create a shared bond that makes the wedding day even more emotional

Practical Tips: Stairs, Shoes, and Humidity

Let’s be real for a moment. The Amalfi Coast is beautiful, but it can be challenging. Here is my “insider” advice for staying comfortable and looking great.

  • The Shoe Situation: Gentlemen, leather loafers are your best friend. Ladies (and anyone wearing heels), do not wear stilettos. Between the cobblestones of Amalfi and the thousands of stairs in Positano, stilettos are a recipe for a twisted ankle. Wedges or block heels are the way to go. They give you the height but also the stability.
  • Fabric Choice: It is humid here. Avoid heavy, synthetic fabrics that don’t breathe. Linen is classic Italian, but it wrinkles. A silk-linen blend or a high-quality lightweight cotton will keep you cool and keep the “vibe” elegant but relaxed.
  • The “First Look”: Because the light is so specific here, I often suggest a “First Look” before the ceremony. It allows us to get those stunning portraits when you are fresh, your hair is perfect, and the sun is just right. Then, you can head into your ceremony and straight to the party with your guests without having to disappear for two hours of photos.
  • Transport: Don’t try to drive yourself. The roads are narrow, the parking is non-existent, and the traffic can be stressful. Use private drivers or, better yet, boat transfers. Arriving at your wedding by boat is a legendary experience and looks incredible in photos.

Immersive Local Experiences: Beyond the Vows

When you bring your friends and family all the way from the States, you want to give them more than just a wedding; you want to give them a Mediterranean chapter in their own lives.

One of the best things you can do is charter a private yacht for a day. We can sail around Capri, see the Faraglioni rocks, and find coves where the water is so clear you can see the bottom 30 feet down. This is also a great time for some “pre-wedding” or “post-wedding” lifestyle photography. No formal clothes, just you two being happy on the water.

Another idea is a “Lemon Grove Reception.” Imagine your dinner table set directly under the heavy, yellow lemons of Minori or Amalfi. The scent is intoxicating, and the way the light filters through the leaves creates a natural “softbox” for photography. It’s a sensory experience that your guests will talk about for years.

And don’t forget the food. A wedding in Italy is a feast. From handmade scialatielli pasta to fresh seafood caught that morning, and of course, a limoncello toast using lemons from the very grove you are sitting in. This is the “Dolce Vita” you came for.

Why a Professional, Local Team Matters

You might be tempted to bring a photographer from the US, but there is a specific “photographic intelligence” required for the Amalfi Coast. We have to deal with vertical landscapes, rapidly changing light as the sun slips behind the mountains, and logistics that would baffle anyone who doesn’t live here.

As a local, I know the shortcuts. I know the ferry captains. I know the owners of the private terraces who will let us in for five minutes to get that perfect shot. I work with a handpicked team of planners and stylists who share my philosophy of authenticity and inclusion. We aren’t just “vendors”; we are the guardians of your experience.

My goal is for you to look back at your wedding photos and not just see what you looked like, but remember how you felt. I want you to feel the warmth of the sun on your shoulders, the taste of the salt in the air, and the overwhelming joy of saying “I do” in the most beautiful place on earth.
