I still remember the first time I drove down the Chiantigiana road as the sun began to dip behind the cypress trees. There is a specific kind of magic in the air there that you just don’t find anywhere else in the world. It’s a mix of the scent of ripening grapes, the warmth of ancient stone radiating the day’s heat, and a silence that feels almost sacred. For many of my couples coming from the United States, this isn’t just a trip; it’s the realization of a lifelong dream. They’ve seen the movies and looked at the postcards, but standing in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, between the historic giants of Florence and Siena, is something that truly changes you.

When I started my journey as a Chianti wedding photographer, I realized that my job wasn’t just to take pictures. It was to be a storyteller and a guide for people who wanted to bottle up that Tuscan feeling and keep it forever. My style is often described as bright and airy, but to me, it’s simply about capturing the truth of the light. I love the way the golden hour in Chianti paints everything in soft pastels and deep ambers, turning a simple vineyard into a Renaissance masterpiece.

If you are planning your big day from New York, Los Angeles, or London, the sheer number of options can feel a bit overwhelming. You see beautiful venues everywhere on the internet, but how do you know which one actually has the right “vibe”? Is it a castle you want, or a hidden hamlet where your whole family can live together for a week? Through my lens and my experience working with hundreds of international couples, I’ve put together this deep look at the best Chianti wedding venues. I want to help you see these places not just as locations on a map, but as the stage for your own unique story.

Why I Believe Chianti is the Ultimate Choice for US Couples

A lot of the guides you find online will give you a list of names and addresses, but they often miss why Chianti resonates so deeply with American couples. In my experience, it’s about the “usable history.” In the States, something a hundred years old is a landmark. In Chianti, we have castles that have been producing wine since the 1400s and villas where popes once spent their summers. But these aren’t museums; they are living, breathing homes where you can actually celebrate.

The hospitality here is ingrained in the DNA of the people. Tuscany has been welcoming travelers since the Renaissance, so the level of service you’ll find is incredibly high. Vendors here—from the florists to the caterers—understand the expectations of a high-end destination wedding. They know how to take care of guests who have traveled across the ocean to be there.

From a purely visual perspective, a wedding in Chianti offers a landscape that acts as its own decor. You don’t need a lot of extra “stuff” when you have rolling hills, iconic cypress-lined roads, and sunsets that turn the sky into a living painting. It’s a place where the food—the Chianina beef, the truffles, the handmade pasta—becomes as much a part of the memory as the ceremony itself.

My Favorite Fairy Tale Castles in the Heart of Chianti

There is an undeniable drama to getting married in a castle. It speaks of history, power, and timeless romance. In Chianti, these castles often sit on the very top of the hills, giving you a 360-degree view of the world below.

One of the most iconic spots I’ve ever worked at is Castello di Meleto in Gaiole in Chianti. This place is a fortress that dates back to the 1200s, but once you step inside, it’s all about elegance. There are frescoed halls and a tiny, perfectly preserved private theater that feels like something out of a movie. I love shooting here because every corner tells a story. You have the grand courtyard for a black-tie reception, but then you have the ancient stables for a party that goes late into the night. Meleto also produces some of the best wine in the region, so your guests aren’t just drinking wine; they are drinking the history of the ground they are standing on.

Then there is Castello di Verrazzano, perched high above the valley between Florence and Siena. It’s famous for its connection to the explorer who discovered New York Harbor, which always makes my US couples feel a special connection to the place. The late-afternoon light here is legendary. It hits the stone walls and the vineyards at just the right angle to create a glow that is every photographer’s dream.

I also have a soft spot for Castello di Vicchiomaggio in Greve in Chianti. It’s a 15th-century gem that feels incredibly sophisticated. The panoramic terrace is, in my opinion, one of the best spots in all of Tuscany for a sunset cocktail hour. Guests can look out over the vine-clad hills while sipping a glass of the estate’s own Chianti Classico. It’s a moment of pure “dolce vita” that they will talk about for years.

Living Like Royalty: The Luxury Villas of the Region

If the castles are about drama, the villas are about refined, aristocratic beauty. These were the summer homes of the Italian elite, designed for comfort and the display of fine art.

Villa Mangiacane is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture just a short drive from Florence. It was built with the influence of the Machiavelli family, and you can feel that weight of history in the opulent suites and the grand loggia. I once shot a wedding here where the couple used a thousand floating candles in the loggia, and it was one of the most spellbinding things I’ve ever seen. The villa is surrounded by 600 acres of vineyards and olive groves, so even though you are close to the city, it feels like you are in your own private world.

For those who want something truly exclusive, Villa Cetinale near Siena is often at the top of the list. It’s a Baroque masterpiece with some of the most famous gardens in Italy. The “Stairway to Heaven” is a row of 300 steps that lead up to a monastery on the hill, and while it’s a bit of a climb, the view from the top is unbeatable. I love the way the long, cypress-lined avenue at Cetinale works for a long-table dinner. It creates a sense of scale and elegance that is hard to find anywhere else.

We also have Villa Vignamaggio, which is supposedly the home where the Mona Lisa was born. It’s a working organic farm and a historic wine cellar that perfectly blends “rustic elegance” with deep history. The pink facade of the villa against the dark green of the cypress trees is a classic Tuscan color palette that looks incredible in photographs.

The Magic of the Borgo: Taking Over Your Own Private Village

A “borgo” is a tiny medieval hamlet, and for a lot of my couples, renting one for the whole weekend is the ultimate dream. It means you have a whole village just for you and your family.

Borgo Stomennano is probably one of the most famous and beautiful examples. Located right near the medieval walls of Monteriggioni, it’s a place where time seems to have stopped. The main villa is grand and filled with frescoes, but the surrounding farmhouses are rustic and charming. What I love about Stomennano is the flexibility. You can have a pizza party in the piazza one night, the wedding in the Italian gardens the next, and a pool party the morning after. As a photographer, it’s a playground of different textures—weathered stone, lush gardens, and rolling vineyards as far as the eye can see.

Borgo di Pietrafitta Relais near Castellina in Chianti is another wonderful choice for an intimate hamlet wedding. It feels like a cozy, romantic retreat with stone buildings and an infinity pool that has one of the best views of the valley. The winding pathways and ancient olive trees create so many little spots for “secret” photos that feel authentic and unplanned.

If you have a larger group, Tenuta di Artimino is a powerhouse. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site with a grand Medici villa at its heart and a whole medieval village with apartments for guests. It’s a massive estate that produces its own wine and oil, and the sheer scale of it is enough to take anyone’s breath away. The views of the village of Artimino at sunset are something you have to see to believe.

My Approach to Capturing Your Story in Chianti

When you work with my studio, I want you to feel like you have an ally on the ground. I’ve spent over ten years learning the rhythm of the light in these valleys, and I use that knowledge to make sure you look your best. I call it “visual logistics”—it’s about knowing exactly when the sun will hit the facade of a castle or when the shadows in a vineyard will be soft enough for a portrait.

I don’t believe in forced, stiff poses. My goal is to capture the “frozen movement” of the emotion. I want to see the laughter during the speeches, the quiet moment of nerves before you walk down the aisle, and the explosion of energy when the band starts playing. I usually only spend about 30 to 40 minutes on guided portraits because I want you to actually be present at your wedding. I want you to enjoy the wine and the food and the company of your guests, while I stay in the background capturing the magic as it happens.

If you’re looking for help with the logistics beyond the photos, my team and I also offer Chianti wedding planner services. My colleague Felice and I work as a cohesive unit to make sure the visual side and the organizational side of the day are perfectly in sync. We help you choose ceremonies that fit your vision, whether it’s a symbolic one in a vineyard or a civil ceremony in a historic town hall like Radda or Castellina.

Planning Your Destination Wedding: The Practical Stuff

I know that planning a wedding from thousands of miles away can feel like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. One of the first things you need to decide is the timing.

May and June are some of my favorite months because everything is so green and the poppies are in bloom. The weather is mild and the light is incredibly soft. July and August are beautiful and bright, but they can be very hot. If you choose a summer date, I always recommend starting the ceremony later in the afternoon to avoid the heat and to catch that perfect golden hour for your photos.

September and October are the harvest months, or “Vendemmia”. This is when the vineyards turn those beautiful shades of gold and red, and there’s a crispness in the air that is so romantic. It’s a busy time in Chianti, but it’s absolutely worth it for the colors alone.

When it comes to the ceremony itself, most of my American couples choose a symbolic one. It gives you the freedom to get married anywhere—in a garden, under an ancient oak tree, or in the middle of a vineyard—without having to worry about the mountain of Italian bureaucracy. You can handle the legal paperwork back home and then have the emotional, meaningful ceremony here in the hills.

The “Emiliano Russo” Experience: More Than Just Pictures

For me, the final step of the wedding is the album. In a world where everything is digital, I still believe in the power of a physical book that you can hold in your hands. We work with the best Italian artisans to create custom fine art albums using high-quality leathers, silks, and linens. You can choose the colors and materials that match the style of your wedding, creating a legacy that you can pass down through your family.

My studio also provides videography services. We have a team of professionals who share my visual philosophy and aesthetic, so the photos and the video feel like they belong to the same story. We coordinate our movements during the day so we aren’t in each other’s way, and we work together to make sure the final result is a beautiful, cohesive memory of your day.

We also love helping our couples plan pre-wedding activities for their guests. Whether it’s a wine tasting in a historic cellar, a truffle hunt with trained dogs, or a pizza party under the stars, these are the moments that turn a wedding into an unforgettable holiday for everyone involved.

Why is a Tuscany Wedding a special experience? First of all, because Tuscany has a lot to offer: beach, hills, sea, mountains, fabulous cities, culture, ancient atmosphere, delicious food, elegance. When I have been hired to be a Wedding Photographer Tuscany, I’ve had the opportunity to appreciate all the special features of a Tuscan-Style Wedding.

Choosing to get married in Chianti is a decision to embrace history, beauty, and the simple joys of life. It’s about more than just a pretty location; it’s about a feeling that stays with you long after you’ve gone home.

I’ve seen how this landscape transforms a wedding into something deeply personal and powerful. I’ve seen couples shed tears during a first look in an olive grove and families dancing until dawn in a castle courtyard. It is a privilege for me to be there to capture these moments, and I would love to help you tell your story in the heart of Tuscany.
