First, you have to realize that you need to appear before the Civil Registrar in the town where you want to marry to make a declaration of intent. This is basically like applying for a marriage license in the US. You’ll need your valid US passports and original “long form” birth certificates. These certificates need an “Apostille” stamp from your Secretary of State and a professional translation into Italian.   

The two big documents you’ll hear everyone talking about are the “Nulla Osta” and the “Atto Notorio”. The “Nulla Osta” is a sworn statement you get in Italy at the US Consulate (in cities like Rome, Florence, Naples, or Milan), where you swear there is no legal reason why you can’t get married. The “Atto Notorio” is a declaration sworn to by four witnesses—who can’t be family members—usually at an Italian Consulate in the US before you even leave home.

Shipping the Dress: Don’t Do It

I get asked about this a lot. My advice? Carry the dress on the plane. Most flight attendants are used to this and will help you hang it in a closet so it doesn’t get smashed in the overhead bin. Shipping a dress internationally is expensive and risky. Between the import duties (which can be 12%) and the VAT (which is a massive 22% in Italy), you could end up paying hundreds of dollars just to get the dress through customs. Plus, there is always the chance it gets stuck in a warehouse. Save yourself the worry and keep it with you.   

Tipping in Italy: The Real Rules

Tipping etiquette in Italy is very different from the US. It is not expected as a mandatory percentage of the bill. In restaurants, rounding up or leaving a few euros is plenty. For your wedding vendors, tipping is a way to show gratitude for “extraordinary” service, but it’s not “mandatory”. If you want to tip your hair stylist, DJ, or photographer, a gesture of €50 to €100 is very generous and always appreciated. But honestly, the best “tip” you can give us is a glowing review and sharing our work with your friends.

The “best” time to get married in Italy depends on what you want, but most experts—and I agree—point toward the “shoulder seasons”. May and June are beautiful because the countryside is lush and green before the summer heat turns it to gold. September is what I call the “Golden Month”. The light is soft and hazy, the humidity drops, and there is a sense of celebration in the air with the harvest season. If you want to avoid the intense heat and the heaviest tourist crowds, these are the months to aim for.   

Comparing Traditions: Italian vs. American

If you are coming to Italy, you might want to mix some local traditions into your day. In the US, weddings are often about the dancing, but in Italy, it’s all about the food. Italian weddings can be long, with multiple courses that last for hours.   

Instead of paper confetti, we use confetti which are sugared almonds, usually given in odd numbers (five is the tradition) to symbolize health, wealth, fertility, happiness, and long life. You might see the tarantella, a lively folk dance that brings everyone into a circle to celebrate love and community. And keep an ear out for guests shouting “Un bacio per la sposa!”—which means “A kiss for the bride!”—expecting the newlyweds to kiss on cue.
