RAVELLO STORIES

Discover Sarah & Kevin’s unique Ravello wedding. From a ceremony at Sant’Eustachio ruins to a vibrant Villa Eva reception, experience their journey with Emiliano Russo.

The position of thIf you ask a photographer what their favorite kind of wedding is, they might talk about light, or composition, or landscapes. But for me, the most compelling weddings are the ones that tell a story of contrast. They are the weddings that bridge two worlds, two atmospheres, and two distinct “states of mind.”

Sarah and Kevin, a wonderful American couple with a vision as vast as the coastline itself, gave me exactly this gift. They didn’t just want a wedding in Ravello; they wanted a timeline that traversed centuries.

Their day was a journey in the truest sense. It began amongst the ghostly, majestic columns of the Basilica of Sant’Eustachio in Scala—a place that feels ripped from the pages of a medieval history book—and concluded in the elegant, flower-filled embrace of Villa Eva in Ravello. It was a move from the solemn weight of history to the lightness of a Liberty-style garden party.

Therefore, Villa Eva Wedding photography is a timeless experience, with a distinctive touch of elegance and exclusivity.

As photographer in Ravello I thrive on these shifts. They force me to change my lens, my approach, and my energy. I go from documenting the epic stillness of ruins to capturing the frantic joy of a dance floor. This is the story of Sarah and Kevin’s day—a day that proved you really can have it all: the ancient and the modern, the solemn and the spectacular.

The Call of the Ruins

When Sarah and Kevin first told me they wanted their ceremony at the Ruins of Sant’Eustachio, I knew we were creating something special. Most couples stick to the well-trodden path of the Ravello Duomo or the gardens of the town hall. But Scala, Ravello’s quieter, older sister sitting on the opposite ridge, offers something entirely different.

The Basilica of Sant’Eustachio is a roofless 12th-century church. It stands high above the town of Pontone, looking down the valley towards Amalfi and Atrani. It is raw, imposing, and undeniably epic.

The Atmosphere of Antiquity

Arriving at the ceremony site, the first thing that hits you is the scale. The remaining walls and columns frame the blue sky like a giant, open-air cathedral. There is no roof to block the sun, only the ancient stone arches reaching up towards heaven.

For Sarah and Kevin, this setting provided a sense of gravity to their vows. They weren’t just standing on a lawn; they were standing on history. The wind whips through the nave of the old church, carrying the scent of wild fennel and the salt from the sea below. It creates an atmosphere that is almost spiritual, not in a religious sense, but in a connection to the passage of time.

Photographing the Epic

From a photographic perspective, Sant’Eustachio is a playground of texture. The grey, weathered stone provides a stark, dramatic contrast to the softness of a wedding dress. I remember watching Sarah walk toward the “altar”—a simple table set up beneath the main apse. The sunlight was filtering through the empty windows, creating shafts of light that illuminated the dust motes dancing in the air. It felt cinematic.

I used a wide-angle lens here to capture the enormity of the structure. I wanted Sarah and Kevin to look like small, significant figures within this massive landscape of history. It creates a visual metaphor: the endurance of their love mirrored by the endurance of these stones.

The ceremony itself was deeply emotional. Away from the bustle of the main towns, there was total silence, save for their voices and the distant sound of goat bells from the terraces below. It was medieval, it was romantic, and it was entirely them.

The Transition – A Visual Journey

One of the logistical challenges—and photographic opportunities—of a wedding like this is the movement. Moving a wedding party from the rugged heights of Scala to the manicured elegance of Ravello requires coordination. This is where the expertise of a local wedding planner as Linda Gatto becomes invaluable.

But for me, the transit is part of the story. We didn’t just teleport to the reception; we traveled. We stopped along the road that connects the two towns. This road offers one of the best views of Ravello from a distance. You can see the Villa Cimbrone and the Villa Rufolo clinging to the cliff edge.

I asked Sarah and Kevin to stop for a moment against the low stone wall. Behind them, the white buildings of Atrani tumbled down to the water. The light at this time of day—late afternoon—was starting to soften, losing the harsh overhead glare of midday and beginning its transition into the golden hour. It wrapped around them, softening the lines of Kevin’s tuxedo and making Sarah’s veil glow.

These transitional shots are crucial. They bridge the gap between the two “acts” of the wedding play. They show the couple not just at a venue, but in the landscape of the Amalfi Coast. It captures the adventurous spirit of a destination wedding—the feeling of exploring a foreign land with the person you love most.

Villa Eva – The Liberty Dream

If Sant’Eustachio was the “Church,” Villa Eva was the “Home.” Arriving at Villa Eva changes your heartbeat. You leave the public roads and enter a private sanctuary. The architecture shifts from medieval stone to the graceful, sinuous lines of the Liberty style (Italian Art Nouveau). The colors change from grey and blue to pastel ochre, lush green, and the vibrant purple of the bougainvillea.

The Couple Session in the Gardens

We used the arrival at Villa Eva as an opportunity for a second, softer portrait session. The gardens here are a masterpiece of “organized nature.” There are centenary parasol pines that create a high natural ceiling, filtering the light into a soft, dappled green.

I took Sarah and Kevin to the roof terrace. Villa Eva sits at the highest point of Ravello, offering a 360-degree view that is simply unmatched. Up there, with the wind picking up, the vibe was pure euphoria. The ceremony was done.

The legalities were over. Now, they were just husband and wife, standing on top of the world. I captured candid moments of them laughing, Kevin holding Sarah’s hand as she navigated the terrace in her heels, both of them pointing out the ruins of Sant’Eustachio in the distance, marveling at where they had just been.

Emiliano Russo” Aesthetic

In editing these photos, I focused on maintaining the “creamy” quality of the light. Villa Eva reflects a lot of warm light from its walls, which makes skin tones look healthy and luminous. I balanced this warmth with the cool blues of the sea in the background.

My goal with photography in Villa Eva is always to make it feel timeless. I avoid trendy filters or heavy effects. I want Sarah and Kevin to look at these photos in 50 years and feel the heat of the sun and the texture of the stone, not see a dated editing style.

The Dinner – An Al Fresco Feast

The reception dinner was set up in the garden, utilizing the permanent marquee structure that Villa Eva is famous for. This structure is brilliant because it provides shelter without blocking the view. The glass panels allow you to feel like you are outside, dining among the trees.

The Decor

Sarah and Kevin brought a touch of their American style to the tables. They opted for long, imperial tables rather than separate rounds. This creates a communal, family-style atmosphere that I love photographing. It allows for shots down the length of the table, capturing the faces of guests engaged in conversation, passing wine, and laughing.

The decor was elegant but restrained—white florals, plenty of greenery to tie in with the garden, and hundreds of candles. As the sun set, the atmosphere in the marquee transformed. The “Blue Hour” outside turned the sky a deep royal indigo, while inside, the warm tungsten light of the chandeliers and candles created a cozy, golden glow.

AIRY AND MODERN

The Speeches

Speeches are often the emotional core of the reception, and this was no exception. The speeches were heartfelt, funny, and long—in the best American tradition. I moved quietly around the perimeter of the marquee, using a telephoto lens (85mm f/1.2) to capture the reactions. I wasn’t just photographing the person with the microphone; I was photographing Sarah wiping a tear, Kevin laughing with his head thrown back, and the parents looking on with pride. The acoustics of the marquee at Villa Eva are excellent, meaning I could capture these moments without having to be right in their faces.

The Dance Party – Unleashing the Energy

After dinner, the tone shifted again. This is the part of the day that Sarah and Kevin had been looking forward to: the party. Unlike many venues in Ravello that are hotels and have strict noise restrictions to respect sleeping guests, Villa Eva is an exclusive-use event venue. This means the party can go louder and later.

The First Dance

They held their first dance outside on the terrace. We lit the area with sparklers held by the guests. Photographing a first dance by sparkler light is technical magic. I used a slow shutter speed to let the ambient light of the sparklers burn into the image, creating trails of gold, while using a pop of flash to freeze the couple in sharpness. The result is an image that feels magical and kinetic, full of movement and light.

The Indoor Hall

Then, the DJ took over, and the party moved into the indoor hall. This soundproofed space allows for a club-like atmosphere. The American crowd brought the energy. The dance floor was packed instantly. I switched to a wide-angle lens (24mm) and got right into the middle of the action. I wanted to capture the sweat, the singing, the ties tied around heads, the pure, uninhibited joy of celebration.

This wasn’t a stiff, formal ballroom dance. This was a rave with their best friends. I captured shots of the bride crowdsurfing (almost), the groom doing shots with his best man, and the grandparents showing everyone how it’s done. This is the beauty of a wedding in Ravello at Villa Eva—it allows for this progression. You start with the sublime view and end with the sublime party.

Why the Dual-Location Strategy Works

Reflecting on Sarah and Kevin’s choice to split their day between Sant’Eustachio and Villa Eva, I believe it is a strategy more couples should consider.

  • Atmosphere Control: They matched the activity to the venue. The ceremony (solemn) was in a basilica. The party (fun) was in a villa designed for entertainment.
  • Visual Variety: Their wedding album is incredibly diverse. It has the rugged, historical drama of the ruins and the soft, elegant romance of the villa. It feels like two weddings in one.
  • The Journey: Moving between locations gives the day a sense of narrative arc. It prevents the day from feeling stagnant. The guests felt like they were on an adventure.

The Photographer’s Perspective: Visual Logistics

I often describe myself as a “Visual Logistic Storyteller.” Sarah and Kevin’s wedding was a prime example of why logistics matter as much as art.

  • Gear Choices: I carried two camera bodies to switch instantly between wide landscape shots at the ruins and intimate portrait shots in the garden, ensuring no moment was missed during the transitions.
  • Timing the Light: We had to time the ceremony at the ruins perfectly so that the sun wasn’t too harsh (which would create deep shadows in the roofless church) but also ensuring we had enough light left for the portraits at Villa Eva.
  • Managing Movement: Knowing exactly how long it takes to get from Scala to Ravello allowed us to maximize shooting time without making the couple feel rushed.

A Tale of Stone and Sky

Sarah and Kevin’s wedding was a triumph. It was a celebration that honored the deep, ancient history of the Amalfi Coast while embracing the joy of the present moment. They stood among the ruins of empires to make promises for the future, and then danced the night away under the Italian stars.

To Sarah and Kevin: thank you for trusting me with your journey. Thank you for being willing to walk the extra mile (literally) to get the perfect shot, and for bringing such incredible energy to our quiet little corner of the world.

For future couples reading this: don’t be afraid to be bold with your timeline. Don’t be afraid to mix and match venues. Ravello and its surroundings are a treasure chest of locations. You can have the ruins and the villa. You can have the history and the party.

If you are dreaming of crafting your own multi-chapter love story in Ravello, I would be honored to help you capture it. Let’s create something that echoes through the ages.
