When I first met Vivienne and Sam, I could immediately tell that their wedding wouldn’t just be another event on my calendar; it was going to be a shared journey between two very different but equally beautiful worlds. They came all the way from Scotland, a land of mist and rugged highlands, to exchange vows in the sun-drenched vertical paradise of the Amalfi Coast.

As a Ravello wedding photographer my job is often described as capturing images, but with Vivienne and Sam, it felt more like I was a curator of their emotions, translating their Scottish heritage into the visual language of Italy. They chose a microwedding—an intimate, soulful celebration that allowed them to truly breathe in every second of their day, winding through the historic streets of Amalfi and the legendary gardens of Ravello.

The concept of a civil wedding in Ravello is something quite unique. While many couples look for grand cathedrals, there is a specific, quiet power in a civil ceremony held in the gardens of a thousand-year-old town hall. For Vivienne and Sam, this choice reflected their personalities: authentic, elegant, and deeply connected to the people they love most. From the very beginning, our relationship was built on a shared vision of what beauty looks like when it isn’t forced. I remember our first conversations where they spoke about wanting their photos to feel like the “in-between” moments I often talk about—the quiet breaths, the laughter with family, and that soft, golden light that only the Mediterranean can provide.

The Morning Glow at Hotel Miramalfi: Where the Sea Meets the Soul

Our day began at the Hotel Miramalfi in Amalfi, a place that feels like it’s suspended between the sky and the water. This hotel is a masterpiece of mid-century Italian design, and it provided a crisp, contemporary backdrop for the morning preparations. Vivienne and Sam decided to get ready in separate suites, a tradition that always adds a layer of sweet anticipation to the morning. I spent the first few hours moving between the rooms, capturing the distinct energies of two families preparing for a new chapter.

In Vivienne’s suite, the atmosphere was one of profound tenderness. Her mother was there to help her into her dress, and as a photographer, these are the moments I live for. There is a specific kind of light in Amalfi in the morning; it’s soft and slightly misty as it reflects off the harbor below. As Vivienne’s mother adjusted the delicate lace of her gown, I saw a look of pure, maternal pride that didn’t need any words. It was a moment of authentic connection that I was privileged to document. We took several family photos on the private terrace, with the dramatic cliffs of the coast providing a natural frame that no studio could ever replicate.

Meanwhile, in Sam’s room, the Scottish traditions were in full display. Seeing the vibrant colors of the tartan kilts against the minimalist, white-washed walls of the Miramalfi was a visual feast. The kilt is such a powerful symbol of identity, dating back to the 16th century, and Sam wore his clan’s colors with a sense of gravity that was beautiful to witness.

I watched as he fastened his kilt pin and tucked the sgian dubh into his hose, small rituals that connected him to his home thousands of miles away while he stood overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. We spent some time with his family, laughing and enjoying the view, and I could feel the excitement building. The Hotel Miramalfi is perfect for these moments because its layout, carved into the cliffside, ensures that every balcony offers a front-row seat to the beauty of the coast.

Navigating the Vertical City: Logistics and the Art of the Perfect Start

One of the things I pride myself on is not just being a photographer, but being a guide. The Amalfi Coast is notoriously difficult to navigate; the roads are narrow, the traffic can be unpredictable, and the heat can be intense.

For a wedding in Ravello, timing is everything. I worked closely with our Amalfi Coast wedding planner to ensure that Vivienne and Sam didn’t have to worry about a single detail. Whether it’s managing the logistics of moving a wedding party from the sea level of Amalfi up to the 365-meter heights of Ravello or handling the bureaucratic paperwork required for a legal civil ceremony, we make sure the couple can stay in their “wedding bubble”.

In Vivienne and Sam’s case, we carefully timed their departure from Amalfi to ensure they arrived in Ravello when the town was at its most peaceful. I often suggest specific hours to my couples—not because of a rigid schedule, but because I know when the light will hit the stone walls of the Duomo just right, and when the tourist crowds from the ferries have begun to thin out. Being high up in Ravello offers a level of intimacy that is hard to find elsewhere on the coast. There are no cars in the historic center, the air is cooler, and the pace of life seems to slow down.

I remember a small anecdote from that morning: as we were getting ready to leave the Miramalfi, there was a slight delay with the transport. In many weddings, this is where stress begins to creep in. But because we had built such a good relationship and I had already accounted for “Italian time” in our schedule, I was able to turn that extra ten minutes into a spontaneous portrait session by the hotel’s elevator, which is carved directly into the rock. It ended up being one of Vivienne’s favorite shots—a quiet moment of her just looking out at the sea, completely calm, ready to go and marry her best friend.

The Ceremony: A Vow in the Giardino della Principessa di Piemonte

The heart of any civil wedding in Ravello is the ceremony, and for Vivienne and Sam, this took place at the Giardino della Principessa di Piemonte. These gardens are part of the Ravello Town Hall and are, in my opinion, one of the most romantic spots on earth. The garden is a small, public park that the town ropes off for weddings, offering a breathtaking view that stretches across the coastline toward the towns of Minori and Maiori.

MEMORABLE WEDDINGS WITH A RAVELLO WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

What will certainly remain of your wedding in Ravello is a picture of it, yet in order to make this memory unforgettable you need of the professionists. And you will definitely find them in Amalfi and the surrounding villas.

As Vivienne walked through the garden toward Sam, the sound of the bagpipes began to fill the air. There is something truly ethereal about hearing the skirl of the pipes in the mountains of Italy. It’s a sound that commands attention and brings a sense of ancient tradition to the Mediterranean landscape. The ceremony was simple and elegant, conducted by the local registrar with the help of an interpreter. As they exchanged rings, the infinite blue of the sea served as their witness.

What makes this location so functional for photography is the “open shade” provided by the trees. Even if the sun is high, the gardens offer pockets of soft, dappled light that is incredibly flattering. I always use long lenses during the ceremony—an 85mm or a 135mm—which allows me to stay back and respect the intimacy of the moment while still capturing the tears in Sam’s eyes or the way Vivienne’s hand trembled slightly as she placed the ring on his finger. After the “I do’s,” we took group photos right there in the gardens. Because the space is centrally located, just steps away from the main piazza and luxury hotels like the Palazzo Avino, it makes the transition for guests very easy.

The Magic of the Ravello Photo Walk: Chasing the Backlight

Once the family photos were finished, Vivienne, Sam, and I slipped away for their couple session. This is my favorite part of the day, where I can lead the newlyweds through the hidden corners of Ravello that most tourists never see. We didn’t just stay in the main square; we wandered into the residential alleys and the quiet paths behind the Town Hall.

This is where the mastery of light becomes essential. For Vivienne and Sam, I focused on the “backlight” technique. As the sun began to move toward the west, it created a golden halo around them, illuminating the edges of Vivienne’s veil and the texture of Sam’s kilt. Backlighting in Ravello is a photographer’s dream; the warm light bounces off the ancient limestone buildings, creating a soft fill that makes the skin look luminous.

I remember we found a specific arched alleyway near Via San Giovanni del Toro where the light was filtering through some bougainvillea. I asked them to just walk together and talk about the ceremony they had just finished. I didn’t pose them; I just let them be “them.” Those shots, where they are laughing and Sam is holding his wife’s hand, are the ones that truly tell their story.

One of the secrets to a perfect experience in Ravello is knowing the “walking factor.” Ravello is a walking town, and the cobblestones can be a challenge for a bride in heels. I always carry a “survival kit” for my brides—often carrying their shoes while they wear comfortable flats between locations, or knowing exactly where we can stop for a quick gelato to recharge.

With Vivienne and Sam, we stopped near the Piazza Fontana Moresca, an old square with a Moorish fountain that felt like a quiet oasis. We were entirely alone for a few minutes, away from the crowds, and they could just absorb the fact that they were finally husband and wife.

Sunset and the “Blue Hour” at Hotel Miramalfi

After our walk through Ravello, we headed back down to Amalfi for the reception. Returning to the Hotel Miramalfi at sunset is an experience that words can barely describe. The sky over Amalfi turns into a palette of pinks, oranges, and deep purples, and the lights of the town begin to twinkle on the cliffs.

We took a few more photos on the hotel’s rooftop terrace just as the sun dipped behind the Lattari Mountains. In Ravello and Amalfi, the sun disappears earlier than the official sunset time because of the high cliffs, so knowing exactly when this “Golden Window” occurs is vital. After the sun is gone, we enter what I call the “Blue Hour.”

This is a fleeting time when the sky is a deep, velvety blue and the town lights provide a warm, romantic glow. For Vivienne and Sam, this provided a dramatic, cinematic end to their portrait session. The contrast between the natural beauty of the coast and the mid-century elegance of the hotel was simply stunning.

A Celebration of Heritage: Dinner, Speeches, and the First Dance

The reception was held at the hotel’s restaurant, Donna Emma, which sits on a terrace that feels like it’s floating over the Tyrrhenian Sea. It was a small, intimate dinner, which is the beauty of a microwedding. Everyone could hear the speeches, and the emotions were palpable.

Scottish wedding speeches are legendary for their wit and heart, and Sam did not disappoint. He spoke about their journey together, his love for Vivienne, and his gratitude to their families. There was also the traditional “Paying the Piper” ceremony, where Sam toasted the bagpiper with a dram of whisky—a gesture of thanks for the music that had protected them during their vows.

As the night progressed, they had their first dance under the stars, followed by the cutting of the cake. In a nod to their heritage, they used a ceremonial dirk to cut the cake, a moment of strength and unity that brought a piece of Scotland to the Amalfi shore. I stayed to capture the laughter, the dancing, and the quiet moments of guests looking out at the moonlit sea. The Hotel Miramalfi at night transforms into a sanctuary of peace, where the only sound is the melody of the waves below.

Why a Microwedding in Ravello is a Perfect Choice

Reflecting on Vivienne and Sam’s day, I am reminded of why I love what I do. By choosing a Civil wedding in Ravello, they embraced the simplicity and elegance of the Amalfi Coast without the stress of a massive production. My role, and the role of my team, is to transform the event into an experience that is perfect from every angle—legal, logistical, and aesthetic.

We suggest the right hours to avoid the heat and the crowds. We know the secret gardens and the residential streets where the light is most beautiful. We understand the nuances of the “300-day rule” in Italian law and the requirements for a CNI for UK citizens. But most importantly, we care about the people. Vivienne and Sam weren’t just clients; they were a couple who trusted me with their most precious memories. Being able to deliver an album that captures the “backlight” of their walk, the “tenderness” of the prep, and the “majesty” of their vows is the greatest reward.

Ravello is often called the “City of Music” and the “Balcony of Silence”. It is a place that demands you slow down and appreciate the beauty around you. For a couple like Vivienne and Sam, it was the perfect stage for a love story that began in the North and was sealed in the South. If you are dreaming of your own Italian escape, remember that the most beautiful photos don’t just happen; they are planned with heart, expertise, and a deep love for the light.
