CAPRI EXPERIENCE

Discover the beauty of an authentic wedding in Anacapri. From Belvedere Migliara to Da Gelsomina, follow Cydney and Charles’ romantic journey on Capri island

The first time I spoke with Cydney and Charles, I could feel a certain vibration in their voices that usually tells me a story is about to unfold, one that isn’t just about a ceremony but about a shared vision of the world. They were calling from the frantic, high-energy heart of London, a city I love but one that moves at a pace that often leaves little room for silence. As a Capri wedding photographer, I have seen every kind of celebration on this island, from the most extravagant gala to the quietest elopement, but Cydney and Charles wanted something that felt real.

They weren’t looking for the “stiff” or “ingessato” atmosphere often associated with the most famous venues in Capri town. Instead, they were drawn to the soul of the island, to the place where the sun seems to linger a bit longer and the air smells of wild rosemary and lemon zest: Anacapri.

Choosing a wedding in Anacapri was their way of stepping away from the stage and into the heart of the island. They wanted to embrace the Italian “contadina” tradition—the rural, rustic, and profoundly authentic side of Mediterranean life. This desire led them straight to Da Gelsomina, a place that feels less like a formal wedding hall and more like a warm, family-run agriturismo perched on the edge of the world.

My role as their photographer was to be more than just a technician with a camera; I wanted to be their ally, their guide through the winding lanes and the shifting light, capturing the quiet glances and the grand scenery in a way that felt as natural as the landscape itself.

The Soul of the Island: Why Anacapri is Different

To understand why Cydney and Charles fell in love with this part of the island, you have to understand the inherent difference between the two towns that share this rock in the Tyrrhenian Sea. While Capri Town is a dazzling display of energy, luxury boutiques, and cinematic glamour, Anacapri is where the island slows down.

It is a place of breezy lanes, whitewashed homes, and a gentle rhythm of local life that makes you feel like you have stepped into the island’s residential heart. It is higher up, more spread out, and offers a sense of peace that is hard to find elsewhere in the Mediterranean.

For a couple from London, the contrast was everything. They wanted to create a dimension that was strictly linked to the history of the land. Anacapri, with its artisanal studios where sandal makers carve leather by hand and ceramicists glaze tiles in shades of blue and yellow, provided the perfect backdrop for their “un-stiff” vision.

They weren’t interested in the neon lights or the celebrity sightings; they wanted the “dolce far niente”—the sweetness of doing nothing—but doing it with the people they loved most. This is the essence of a wedding in Capri when it is done with heart: it becomes a journey back to the basics of love, food, and beauty.

Morning Rituals and the Tale of Two B&Bs

The day began in two separate, charming Bed & Breakfasts nestled in the quiet corners of Anacapri, not far from the main venue. This was a choice that spoke volumes about their personalities. They didn’t want the sterile environment of a massive hotel suite; they wanted the intimacy of a local home. As I moved between the two locations, I felt like a silent observer of two parallel universes getting ready to collide in the most beautiful way.

In Charles’s B&B, the atmosphere was one of quiet excitement mixed with the typical British humor of his groomsmen. There’s something special about documenting a groom in a setting that feels domestic and grounded; it strips away the nerves and allows for truly candid moments.

Meanwhile, over at Cydney’s, the air was thick with the scent of hairspray, fresh flowers, and a palpable sense of anticipation. She was surrounded by her bridesmaids, and the room was a whirlwind of silk robes and laughter.

One of the most moving moments I have ever witnessed in my career happened right there in that small room. Cydney had decided to do a first look with her mother. In a nod to their UK roots, her mother was wearing a grand, magnificent English-style hat. It was wide-brimmed, elegant, and so perfectly British that it felt like a piece of London had been transported to the Mediterranean sun.

When her mother walked in and saw Cydney for the first time in her wedding dress, time seemed to stop. The tears that followed were real, raw, and deeply moving. It wasn’t just about the dress; it was about the culmination of a journey, and that hat, in all its structured glory, framed her mother’s face in a way that felt both regal and incredibly tender.

After the emotional encounter with her mother, Cydney shared a first look with her bridesmaids. Their reaction was a crescendo of joy—a mix of gasps, cheers, and more tears. These are the moments I live for as a photographer. They are the “stolen glances” and “spontaneous laughter” that define a wedding’s true character. By keeping the getting ready process separate and in such intimate settings, the couple allowed themselves the space to breathe and fully experience the transition from individuals to a united pair.

The Walk to the Edge: Belvedere Migliara

For the ceremony, we moved to the Belvedere Migliara, a spot that I personally consider one of the most spiritual places on the entire island. To get there, you have to walk along the Via Migliara, a small footpath that winds through rural Anacapri, past ancient vineyards and patches of woodland. It’s a walk that prepares the soul for what’s to come.

Cydney arrived accompanied by her father, walking toward the overlook where Charles was waiting. The Belvedere Migliara is a spectacular terrace on the sea, offering views of the Punta Carena Lighthouse and the waves crashing against the cliffs far below. It is an intimate space, far from the tourist crowds, where the only sounds are the wind and the distant sea.

The ceremony was officiated by a close friend of the couple, which added a layer of intimacy that no professional celebrant could replicate. Her words were touching and deeply personal, reflecting the years of friendship and love that had led to this moment. When Cydney and Charles exchanged their rings and spoke their vows, there wasn’t a dry eye among the guests. Their promises to each other were honest, devoid of clichés, and spoke to a future built on mutual respect and shared adventures. In that moment, with the vast horizon of the Tyrrhenian Sea behind them, they weren’t just a couple from London; they were two souls finding their home at the edge of the world.

As the ceremony concluded, we took advantage of the incredible backdrop for group photos and bridal party shots. The natural tiers of the Belvedere and the soft, directional light of the late afternoon made every frame look like a painting. My approach here is always to keep things moving naturally—capturing the hugs, the cheers, and the genuine joy of the guests rather than forcing everyone into stiff, unnatural poses.

A Journey through Time: Villa Jovis and the Roman Soul

After the ceremony, we left the guests to enjoy the first glimpses of the cocktail hour and headed out for a private photo tour around the island. For this, we were joined by a professional driver in a classic vintage car—a must for anyone wanting to capture the true “La Dolce Vita” spirit of a wedding in Anacapri.

Our first destination was the Villa Jovis, also known as the Villa of Tiberius. This is the largest and best-preserved of the twelve villas that Emperor Tiberius built on the island in the 1st century AD. It is perched high on the steep cliffs of the northeastern coast, offering breathtaking views that once allowed the Emperor to control the entire Bay of Naples.

AIRY AND MODERN

Walking through the ruins of Villa Jovis with Cydney and Charles felt like stepping back in time. The crumbling arches, the ancient cisterns, and the sense of isolation provided a dramatic and incredible scenery that was perfectly in line with their desire for something historical and authentic. As a photographer, I am always mindful of the logistics here. Access to Villa Jovis is primarily on foot and involves an uphill walk from the town center, but with a driver, we can get as close as possible to the restricted areas, saving the couple’s energy for the shoot itself.

The light at Villa Jovis is magical. Because it is so high up, it catches the afternoon sun in a way that creates long, dramatic shadows and highlights the textures of the ancient stone. I love to guide my couples through the arches, letting the natural light frame them against the deep blue of the sea. It’s about more than just a photo; it’s about creating a visual narrative that links their modern love story to the thousand-year-old history of the island.

The Beacon of Light: Sunset at Punta Carena

From the heights of Tiberius, we descended toward the sea, heading to the Faro di Punta Carena—the lighthouse that dominates the southwestern coast. If Villa Jovis is about history and grandeur, the Faro is about raw, maritime beauty. Built in 1867, it is one of the oldest and most powerful lighthouses in Italy.

We arrived just as the “golden hour” was beginning. This is that magical time, an hour before sunset, when the light becomes soft, warm, and incredibly flattering. At Punta Carena, the sun sets directly over the water, painting the sky in shades of orange, pink, and gold. It is, in my opinion, the best place on the whole island to watch the day end.

Cydney and Charles stood on the rocky coastline, the red-and-white stripes of the lighthouse rising behind them. The contrast between her white gown and the rugged, sun-bleached rocks was stunning. We took photos on the road, utilizing the panoramic points that look back toward the island, and down by the water where the waves crash against the Massive rocks. These are the moments where I really get to work with the light—capturing the way it catches the fabric of the dress and the emotion in their faces as they realize the magnitude of the day.

I often suggest to my couples that we time our visits to these locations perfectly to avoid the day-trippers. By the time we reached the Faro, most of the tourists had already left the island on the late ferries, leaving us with a sense of private, exclusive serenity. This is one of the secrets of working with a local professional; we know when the light is best and when the crowds are thinnest.

Da Gelsomina: The Heart of the Agriturismo Experience

As the last light of the sunset faded, we returned to Da Gelsomina for the cocktail party. This is where the couple’s vision of an authentic, rural celebration truly came to life. Da Gelsomina is situated in the Migliera area, surrounded by vineyards and orchards. It is a place that values tradition over trend, and the Maresca family, who have run the restaurant for three generations, makes every guest feel like part of the family.

The cocktail party was a relaxed affair held on the terrace overlooking the sea. Instead of formal, posed shots, I focused on capturing spontaneous, random moments as the guests mingled and toasted the newlyweds. The atmosphere was one of pure joy—far removed from the “ingessato” weddings of the high-end hotels.

When it was time for dinner, the guests were led to the pergola—a traditional Italian structure covered in vines that provides a romantic, shaded canopy. This is where the “contadina” soul of the wedding really shone. The tables were decorated simply but elegantly, and the scent of the nearby vegetable garden filled the air.

The menu was a celebration of local flavors. We were treated to the venue’s famous “ravioli capresi”—handmade with caciotta cheese and majoram—and the “pollo al mattone,” a whole chicken roasted in a wood-burning oven just as it has been done for decades. For me, as a photographer, documenting the dinner is about more than just the food; it’s about the speeches. The speeches at Cydney and Charles’ wedding were wonderful—moving, funny, and filled with the kind of sincere emotion that can only come from people who truly know and love the couple. Under the soft light of the pergola, these moments felt incredibly intimate and timeless.

Dancing the Night Away: A Celebration in the Clouds

After the dinner and the speeches, we moved to the pool terrace for the cutting of the cake. The cake was a classic Italian masterpiece, and the couple cut it as the lights of the island began to twinkle in the distance. Their first dance followed, a tender moment by the pool that marked the beginning of the end of a perfect day.

Then, the party really started. Thanks to the music of a fantastic local DJ, the dance floor was never empty. From the youngest flower girls to the grandparents, everyone was on their feet. The music was a mix of contemporary hits and timeless classics, perfectly tailored to the energetic London crowd. It was “dancing all night” in the truest sense of the word, with the energy staying high until the early hours of the morning.

What I loved most about the party at Gelsomina was how inclusive it felt. Because it’s a family-run venue, the staff and the atmosphere encouraged everyone to let loose and enjoy themselves. It didn’t feel like a formal event; it felt like a massive celebration of life and love in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Mastery of Light and Logistics: The Photographer’s Perspective

A wedding in Anacapri presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities for a photographer. Mastery of light is essential. On an island where the sun can be harsh in the middle of the day, knowing how to find the “ethereal, bright, and timeless” light is what separates a professional from an amateur. I always advise my couples to avoid the hours between 10 AM and 3 PM for their main sessions, as the high sun creates deep shadows and can make eyes squint in photos. Instead, we focus on the early morning or the late afternoon, when the light is directional and soft.

Logistics are equally important. Capri is an island accessible primarily by sea, and once you are here, navigating the narrow streets and restricted traffic zones requires local expertise. Whether it’s coordinating with a Capri wedding planner to ensure the vintage car arrives on time or knowing the exact opening and closing hours of sites like Villa Jovis, my job is to take away the guesswork so the couple can focus on each other.

I also pride myself on knowing the “hidden gems”—those spots that are less crowded but equally beautiful. For Cydney and Charles, this meant finding quiet corners of the Migliera path and secret overlooks near the lighthouse where we could shoot in peace. It’s about creating a perfect experience that feels both grand and personal.

A Personal Anecdote: The Magic of the Unexpected

I remember a moment during the photo tour with Cydney and Charles. We were on a narrow road leading up to one of the panoramic points, and our driver had to stop to let a local farmer with a small tractor pass by. Instead of being annoyed by the delay, Charles jumped out of the car, shared a laugh with the farmer in broken Italian, and Cydney leaned out the window, her veil catching the breeze.

I took a quick candid shot of that moment—the contrast of the elegant London groom and the weather-beaten Italian farmer. It wasn’t planned, it wasn’t on the “shot list,” but it was perhaps the most authentic photo of the whole day. It captured exactly what they were looking for: a connection to the real, unpolished heart of the island.

This is what I love about my job. It’s not just about the “standard” poses; it’s about the people I meet and the stories I get to tell. My couples often say that working with me feels like having a friend by their side, someone who happens to be holding a camera. I strive to create a relaxed and fun atmosphere where the couple can truly be themselves. If they are happy and comfortable, the photos will naturally reflect that joy.

Transforming the Event into a Perfect Experience

My goal for every wedding in Anacapri is to transform it from a mere event into a perfect, lifelong memory. This starts with the first conversation and continues long after the last dance. By suggesting the right times, the best locations, and the most trusted local vendors, I help build a “whole universe” for the big day.

Cydney and Charles’ wedding was a perfect example of this. By choosing Da Gelsomina and the Belvedere Migliara, they set the stage for an authentic experience. By trusting me with the light and the logistics, they ensured that every moment was captured with the artistry it deserved.

If you are planning your own wedding on this incredible island, remember that Capri is far more than just a destination; it’s a place where dreams flourish. Whether you want the glamour of the town center or the rustic soul of Anacapri, the most important thing is to choose a path that reflects who you are as a couple. And if you choose the path of authenticity, I will be there to capture every step of the journey.
