The Sanctuary of Stillness: Harshani & Brett’s Villa Eva Celebration

In the chaotic beauty of the Amalfi Coast, where the roads wind precariously and the stairs seem endless, there is a rare luxury that few couples truly embrace: the luxury of staying still.

Most weddings in Ravello are a journey. We walk from the hotel to the town hall, from the town hall to the main square, from the square to a villa. It is a beautiful promenade, a parade of love through history. But when Harshani and Brett contacted me, they laid out a different vision. They didn’t want a parade. They wanted a sanctuary.

They chose Villa Eva, not just as a reception venue, but as their entire world for the day. From the first brush of mascara in the morning to the final, sweaty dance move at 2 AM, everything took place within the 3,000 square meters of this Liberty-style estate.

As photographer in Ravello, I usually thrive on the changing scenery of a wedding walk. But Harshani and Brett’s decision to stay in one place challenged me to look deeper into a single location, to find the infinite variety within the boundaries of the villa. It allowed us to slow down time. It removed the stress of logistics and replaced it with the pure, unadulterated flow of emotion.

This is the story of their day—a masterclass in how to host a wedding that feels less like an event and more like a private, enchanted festival high above the clouds.

The Morning: A Private World

Villa Eva sits at the highest point of Ravello. When you are there, you feel detached from the rest of the coast. The tourists in the piazza feel miles away. The sound of the traffic is replaced by the wind moving through the centenary umbrella pines.

Harshani and Brett utilized the private suites within the villa for their preparations. This is a game-changer. Usually, preparation happens in a hotel room, which can feel transient. But getting ready at the venue makes you feel like the owner of the estate.

I arrived early to scout the light. The morning sun was hitting the Liberty-style façade of the villa, casting soft, intricate shadows through the wrought-iron balconies. I found Harshani in the upper suite. The room was flooded with natural light pouring in through the large glass windows—a signature of the Liberty architecture that seeks to bring the outside in.

There was a profound calmness in the room. Because there was no travel time to factor in, no cars to catch, the atmosphere was serene. I photographed Harshani’s dress hanging against the window, framed by the lush green of the park outside. When she stepped into it, we didn’t have to rush. I had the luxury of time to capture the small details: her mother’s hands adjusting the veil, the way the light caught the diamond in her earring, the deep breath she took as she looked at herself in the antique mirror.

Brett, in a separate wing of the villa, was equally relaxed. We captured candid moments of him and his groomsmen on the terrace, laughing, fixing ties, with the infinite blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea stretching out behind them. There is a specific kind of “groundedness” in photos taken when the subject isn’t checking their watch. Brett looked present. He was ready.

The First Look: Intimacy Among the Pines

Harshani and Brett chose to break tradition and see each other before the ceremony. In a venue as large as Villa Eva, finding a secluded spot for a “First Look” is easy.

I chose a pathway shaded by the massive pine trees. The light here is my favorite kind: dappled, soft, and slightly cool. It acts as a natural filter, smoothing out skin tones and creating a dreamlike atmosphere.

I positioned Brett with his back turned. I signaled Harshani to approach. The crunch of gravel under her shoes was the only sound. When Brett turned around, the world seemed to stop.

Because we were already at the venue, there were no onlookers. No tourists with iPhones. Just the two of them (and me, shooting with a long lens to give them space). The emotion was raw and unfiltered. They hugged, they cried, they laughed. They took a moment to just be together before the madness of the public celebration began.

I captured this sequence with a focus on body language—the way Brett held her face, the way Harshani leaned into him. These are the images that end up meaning the most because they are the most honest.

The Ceremony: The Seaside Pergola

The ceremony took place at the “Seaside Pergola,” a dedicated space within the villa’s gardens that offers a direct line of sight to the horizon.

The setup was breathtaking in its simplicity. White Chiavari chairs were arranged on the lawn. The pergola itself was dressed in cascading white flowers and greenery, mirroring the natural vegetation of the park.

As the guests took their seats, the sun began to lower, bathing the garden in a warm, golden glow. This is the “Golden Hour” magic of Ravello. Because we are so high up, the light stays with us longer than it does down in Amalfi.

Harshani walked down the aisle to the sound of a string quartet. The visuals were stunning—the white of her dress popping against the vibrant green of the grass and the deep blue of the sea. But what struck me most was the sound. The acoustics at Villa Eva are unique; the trees dampen the echo, making the space feel intimate despite being outdoors. Every word of their vows was crystal clear.

I moved quietly around the perimeter, capturing the ceremony from every angle. I shot through the leaves of the trees to add depth and context to the images. I captured the tears of the parents in the front row. And finally, I captured the kiss—a silhouette against the shimmering sea, framed by the floral arch.

The Portrait Session: No Travel Required

Usually, after the ceremony, I have to whisk the couple away for 45 minutes to get the “hero shots” in the town square or at Villa Rufolo. But Harshani and Brett had everything they needed right here.

We simply took a walk through the 3,000-square-meter park. We moved from the ceremony area to the “Belvedere,” the highest terrace of the villa. The view from here is 360 degrees. You can see the coastline curving away towards Salerno, the rugged mountains behind, and the open sea ahead.

The sun was setting, painting the sky in streaks of violet and apricot. I used this dramatic sky as a backdrop for wide-angle environmental portraits. I asked them to stand at the balustrade, letting the wind catch the veil. These shots look epic, cinematic.

Then, we moved into the “bosco”—the wooded area of the garden. Here, the light was lower, moodier. I switched to a prime lens with a wide aperture (f/1.2) to create that creamy bokeh background. I focused on the intimacy between them. The adrenaline of the ceremony had faded, replaced by a quiet joy.
