START PLANNING YOUR WEDDING IN RAVELLO

Chad and Michael share a tender moment during their Hotel Caruso elopement, with mountains in the background.

The road that winds up from the shimmering coast toward the heights of Ravello is more than just a path; it is a transition between the chaotic beauty of the world below and a silent, elevated sanctuary that seems to hover between the sea and the sky. As wedding photographer in Ravello, I have walked these stone steps and ancient alleyways countless times, yet every arrival feels like the first. There is a specific frequency here, a stillness that carries the scent of lemon blossoms and the faint echo of history. It was within this “sanctuary above the clouds” that Chad and Michael, a truly wonderful couple from the heart of London, decided to weave their own story into the fabric of the Amalfi Coast. Their choice of a Hotel Caruso elopement Ravello was not just about finding a luxury venue; it was about seeking a place that matched the elegance and intimacy of their bond.

When I first spoke with Chad and Michael, I immediately felt a connection to their vision. Coming from the fast-paced energy of London, they wanted something that felt like a complete departure—a moment of suspended time where the only things that mattered were their vows, their love, and their beloved dog. I always tell my couples that an elopement is not a “smaller” wedding; it is a more concentrated one. Without the distractions of a large guest list, every look, every gesture, and every ray of light takes on a heightened significance. My role is to be more than a photographer; I am a witness and a guide, helping to navigate the logistics of this vertical town while capturing the raw, unscripted emotions that make an elopement so powerful.

Ravello has always been a haven for artists and dreamers. From Richard Wagner, who found his magic garden here, to Virginia Woolf and DH Lawrence, the town invites contemplation. For a wedding in Ravello, this heritage provides a backdrop of unparalleled depth. Chad and Michael understood this implicitly. They didn’t want a “staged” event; they wanted a day that felt like an extension of their life together, just framed by the most beautiful scenery in the world. As we planned their day, we talked about light, about the dog’s personality, and about how to find those quiet corners of the Hotel Caruso where they could truly feel alone in the world.

The Sanctuary of the 11th-Century Palace

The Belmond Hotel Caruso is perhaps the most iconic stage for love in all of Italy. An 11th-century palace built by a wealthy family seeking refuge, it stands as a monument to resilience and refined beauty. When you walk through its halls, you are walking through a mosaic of time. The Moorish arches, the 18th-century frescoes, and the vaulted ceilings all tell stories of the generations that have found peace here. For Chad and Michael, the hotel was not just a place to sleep; it was the foundation of their experience.

They chose to prepare for their day in one of the hotel’s most breathtaking suites. I remember walking into the room and being struck by the large, ogival arched window that framed the entire coastline. It looked like a living painting. The deep blues of the Tyrrhenian Sea met the vibrant greens of the villa’s terraced gardens, creating a natural color palette that informed every photograph we took. In April, the light in Ravello has a clarity that is hard to describe. The air is crisp, and the sun sits at an angle that creates long, soft shadows, perfect for the intimate moments of preparation.

What made their morning so special was the lack of a traditional “first look.” Instead of separating, Chad and Michael decided to help each other get ready. This is a choice I often suggest to eloping couples because it fosters a sense of partnership from the very first moment. I watched them in the gardens just outside their suite, adjusting each other’s jackets and shirts with a tenderness that was truly moving. There were no nerves, only smiles and laughter. I remember an anecdote from that morning: as they were helping each other with their cufflinks, a light breeze caught the scent of the wisteria nearby, and they both just stopped for a second to breathe it in. It was a small, quiet moment, but it represented the essence of why they chose Ravello—to slow down and be present.

A Best Man with Four Legs: The London Traveler

One of the most heartwarming aspects of this Hotel Caruso elopement Ravello was the presence of their dog. Chad and Michael are deeply attached to him, and they went to great lengths to bring him all the way from London to act as the official witness to their union. As a dog lover myself, I found this addition to be perfect. Dogs have a way of breaking the formality of a wedding and bringing everyone back to the present moment with their spontaneity and joy.

We spent a good portion of the morning taking “getting ready” photos of the dog. He even had his own little tuxedo! The irony of a dog in a tuxedo within the halls of an 11th-century palace was not lost on us, and it led to some of the most fun and authentic photos of the day. We laughed as we tried to get him to sit still for a portrait under the Moorish arch. I used a long lens to stay back and let the three of them interact naturally, capturing the way the dog looked up at Chad and Michael with what seemed like genuine participation.

When it was time to head to the ceremony, the dog was led on a leash that had been beautifully decorated with greenery and small, delicate flowers. Seeing him walk down the stone stairs toward the Wagner Garden was a sight I won’t soon forget. It added a layer of family warmth to the day that made the elopement feel complete. I believe that including pets or personal elements like this is what transforms a “destination wedding” into a true home away from home.

The Heartbeat of the Ceremony: Carmela Cesarano

For the ceremony itself, Chad and Michael entrusted the beautiful words to Carmela Cesarano. We work with Carmela very often, and I must say, she is one of our favorite celebrants. Her personality is a perfect match for the spirit of Ravello, refined, warm, and deeply empathetic. Carmela has a way of holding the space during a ceremony that makes everyone feel at ease, and her scripts are always bespoke, reflecting the unique journey of each couple.

As a Ravello wedding planner would tell you, the choice of celebrant is the soul of a symbolic wedding. Carmela doesn’t just read words; she tells a story. For Chad and Michael, she spoke about their life in London and the path that led them to this garden in Italy. The ceremony took place in the Wagner Garden, a terraced Eden that overlooks the sea. We decided on a very understated floral setup, just some elegant blooms placed on the ground. Nothing was “shouted” or over-the-top; everything was in harmony with the natural beauty of the surroundings.

The exchange of promises was incredibly emotional. I watched through my lens as Chad and Michael moved between laughter and tears. These are the moments I live for as a photographer, the split second when a tear falls or a shared joke causes a spontaneous smile. Meanwhile, the dog was lying on the ground, looking quite bored and occasionally nodding off. He clearly wanted to go explore the five-star structure but was held back by his duties as a witness. His “participatory” yet sleepy expression provided a wonderful, humorous counterpoint to the emotional weight of the vows.

Portraits with the Dior Vespa and the Architecture of Legacy

After the ceremony and a celebratory toast with Carmela, we took Chad and Michael around the villa for their portrait session. April is a fantastic time for this because the gardens are beginning to burst into life. The bougainvillea was starting to show its vibrant colors, and the light was beginning to soften as the sun moved toward the horizon.

One of the highlights of the session was the Dior Vespa 946. This scooter is an icon of Italian style, and at the Hotel Caruso, it sits near the main entrance, practically begging to be photographed. For a couple from London, it represented the ultimate “La Dolce Vita” moment.

We positioned them near the Vespa in the main entrance hall, a space defined by its Moorish influence and stunning ceramic floors. The contrast between the modern luxury of the Dior brand and the thousand-year-old stone of the palace created a visual tension that was incredibly chic.

We then stepped outside to the area in front of the Church of San Giovanni del Toro. Because the church was empty and the street was quiet, one of the benefits of having a photographer who knows how to time these things: we were able to get some spectacular shots in front of the historic hall entrance.

A Ravello elopement one-of-a-kind experience

Why is a Ravello elopement a special experience? First of all, because Ravello has a lot to offer: views, villas, sea, mountains, fabulous cities, culture, ancient atmosphere, delicious food, elegance. When I have been hired to be a Ravello wedding photographer, I’ve had the opportunity to appreciate all the special features of an Amalfi wedding experience.

I always advise my couples on the best times to visit certain spots to avoid the tourist crowds. In Ravello, knowing the “quiet hours” of the squares and the hidden pathways is essential for creating that feeling of exclusivity.

The “Creamy” Light of an April Sunset

As we moved through the property, the light began to change. In photography, we talk about the “Golden Hour,” but in Ravello, during April, the sunset has a very specific quality that I like to call “creamy.” It’s not an aggressive, orange light; instead, it’s a soft, diffused glow that seems to wrap around everything it touches.

We followed the path that leads to the famous Infinity Pool. This pool is often cited as the most beautiful in the world, and for good reason. Set at the highest point of the hotel, it seems to drop directly into the Mediterranean.

AIRY AND MODERN

As the sun began to set, the sky was filled with light, wispy clouds that created a double reflection in the water. I remember telling Chad and Michael to just walk along the edge and look out at the horizon. I didn’t need to give them many directions; the beauty of the moment took over.

The reflection of the clouds in the still water of the pool, combined with the creamy light of the late afternoon, made for some of the most spectacular photos of the entire wedding. It was a moment of pure magic.

As a photographer, my job is to master the logistics of light, knowing exactly when the sun will dip behind the mountains and how the shadows will fall across the pool. In Ravello, the sun disappears earlier than it does at sea level, so timing is everything. We managed to catch that perfect window where the world turned into a pastel painting.

An Intimate Dinner and the Blue Hour First Dance

The day concluded with an intimate dinner for two under a pergola. April in Italy can still be quite chilly once the sun goes down, so the hotel had set up small heaters to keep Chad and Michael warm. It was incredibly romantic, a single table set with fine linens and candles, surrounded by the silence of the Ravello night.

Before they sat down for their meal, we had one last ritual: the cake cutting and the first dance. They were joined by two musicians, a violinist and a guitarist. The sound of the strings echoing under the pergola was hauntingly beautiful. As they danced their first dance as a married couple, the sky transitioned into the “Blue Hour.” This is that magical time after sunset when the sky turns a deep, royal indigo and the lights of the coastal villages below start to twinkle like diamonds.

I took the final photos of the night during this Blue Hour. The contrast between the cool blue of the sky and the warm, golden glow of the candles and heaters was the perfect ending to their story. It was a day that began with the energy of London and ended with the timeless serenity of the Amalfi Coast.

The Art of the Experience: A Photographer’s Perspective

Looking back at Chad and Michael’s Hotel Caruso elopement Ravello, I am reminded of why I love my work so much. It isn’t just about the technical settings on my camera or the beauty of the locations. It is about the relationship I build with the couple. Chad and Michael were so open, so full of joy, and so willing to trust my suggestions.

One of the things we pride ourselves on at the studio is our ability to transform an event into a perfect experience. This means more than just taking pictures. It means suggesting the right time for the ceremony to catch the best light. It means knowing which paths are less crowded at 3:00 PM vs. 5:00 PM. It means being able to pivot when the weather changes or when a dog decides he’d rather nap than pose.

Ravello is a town that demands respect and a deep understanding of its rhythms. Its verticality can be a logistical challenge for the unprepared, but for those who know its secrets, it is the most rewarding place in the world to celebrate love. Whether it’s the double columns of the ogival colonnade or the hidden gardens that bloom with wisteria, every corner of this town offers a new perspective.

Chad and Michael’s wedding was a testament to the power of intimacy. It was elegant without being stiff, emotional without being frantic, and beautiful in a way that felt completely natural. As they left the pergola to start their life together, I knew that the photos we captured would be more than just memories; they would be a window back into that “sanctuary above the clouds” where time stood still for a day.

For anyone considering an elopement in this magical part of the world, my advice is simple: embrace the quiet. Let the history of the walls and the quality of the light guide you. Trust in the professionals who know how to navigate the cobblestones and the sunsets. And most importantly, bring your own story, whether that includes a tuxedoed dog or just a few heartfelt words. Ravello is waiting to hold your story, just as it has held the stories of dreamers for a thousand years.
