There is a secret about the Amalfi Coast that few people talk about. We are famous for our sun. We are famous for the blinding white light bouncing off the sea in July, for the lemons glowing like little suns in the terraced gardens, and for that golden hour that turns the pastel houses of Positano into warm, toasted sugar. But there is another side to this coast. A side that is quieter, deeper, and frankly, more intensely romantic. It is the coast when it rains.

I often tell my couples that the weather is the one guest we cannot control, but it is also the guest that gives the day its true character. When Rebecca and Alexander contacted me for their elopement, I knew immediately that their day would be special. They came all the way from Louisiana, a land that knows a thing or two about humidity, storms, and the lush beauty that comes after the rain. They didn’t want a “perfect” postcard; they wanted a real experience. And Positano, in its infinite dramatic wisdom, gave them exactly that.

This is a story about embracing the unexpected, about how the rain can turn a busy tourist town into a private film set, and how, with the right attitude and the right team, a “Plan B” can turn out to be infinitely more beautiful than Plan A.

If you are considering a Hotel Marincanto wedding, let this story be your guide. Let me take you through the mist and the magic of Rebecca and Alexander’s day.

The Morning: Anticipation in the Clouds

The day started with that distinct smell of rain on hot stone—petrichor, they call it. The sky wasn’t blue; it was a textured canvas of slate, silver, and pearl. For a photographer, this is a gift. While direct sunlight can be harsh and cast deep shadows under the eyes, this soft, diffused light acts like a giant, natural softbox in the sky. It wraps around the skin, smoothing every feature, and it makes the colors of the landscape pop in a way that is almost surreal.

Rebecca and Alexander were getting ready in two separate suites at the Hotel Marincanto. This venue is a jewel in Positano’s crown, not just for its luxury, but for its strategic layout. Carved into the cliffside, it offers shelter and views simultaneously. While the wind whipped the sea into a frenzy below, inside the suites, everything was calm.

I remember walking between their rooms. Alexander was adjusting his tie, looking out at the grey horizon with a sense of calm determination. He has that Southern gentleman vibe—resilient and unflappable. Rebecca, on the other hand, was a vision. When she looked out at the rain, she didn’t frown. She smiled. Coming from Louisiana, they understand that water is life. There was no panic, no frantic checking of weather apps. Just an acceptance that this was their day, and it was going to be beautiful no matter what.

They had decided against a “first look.” They wanted that old-school, heart-stopping moment of seeing each other for the first time at the aisle. Or, in this case, on the terrace.

The Ceremony: Waiting for the Heavens to Pause

The ceremony was scheduled to take place on the private terrace of the bride’s suite. It is one of my favorite spots at the Marincanto because it feels like you are floating halfway between the sea and the sky. However, the rain was coming down in sheets.

Here is where the human element of a wedding team becomes crucial. We were working with Raffaele Mitridate, a celebrant who is practically an institution on the Amalfi Coast. Raffaele isn’t just someone who reads a script; he reads the room, and he reads the sky. Along with the impeccable management of the Marincanto, we made a collective decision: we wait.

MEMORABLE WEDDINGS WITH A POSITANO WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

What will certainly remain of your wedding in Positano is a picture of it, yet in order to make this memory unforgettable you need of the professionists. And you will definitely find them in Positano and the surrounding villas.

We didn’t rush. We watched the clouds moving fast over the Lattari Mountains. And then, as if on cue, the rain slowed to a mist, and then stopped. The air was thick and fresh. We stepped out onto the terrace. The tiles were wet and shiny, reflecting the sky like a mirror.

When Alexander saw Rebecca walking towards him, the backdrop was dramatic and moody. The sea behind them was a churning, deep teal, contrasting perfectly with the soft white of her dress. The ceremony was incredibly intimate. Raffaele spoke about storms and sanctuaries, words that felt written for that exact moment. Because of the weather, there was a silence over Positano that you rarely get. The usual buzz of boats and beach crowds was gone. It was just the sound of the wind, the waves crashing far below, and their vows.

Capturing the “Pyramid” of Positano

Immediately after the ceremony, we took advantage of the dry break to shoot on the terrace. The light was exquisite. I didn’t have to fight with the sun; I could shoot from any angle. The colors of Positano—the pinks, ochres, and terracottas of the houses stacked on the hill—were saturated and vivid. Usually, under a bright sun, these colors can look washed out. Today, they were deep and rich, vibrant against the grey sky.

We moved around the various levels of the Hotel Marincanto. This hotel is a labyrinth of beauty, with arches, staircases, and hidden corners that frame the landscape perfectly. We went to the main terrace to get that iconic shot: the couple in the foreground, and behind them, the famous “pyramid” of Positano rising up the mountain. It is the classic view, but with the storm clouds swirling around the peak, it looked like a Renaissance painting.

The Miracle of the Empty Beach

Then, we did something that is usually impossible in the middle of the wedding season. We walked down the private stairs of the Marincanto that lead directly to the beach.

Any Positano wedding photographer will tell you that the main beach, the Spiaggia Grande, is a challenge. It is usually a carpet of orange umbrellas and thousands of tourists in swimsuits. It is chaotic. But today? Today it was empty.

The rain had scared everyone away. The beach was deserted. It was a miracle. We walked down to the shoreline, the pebbles dark and shiny from the water. Rebecca and Alexander stood there, alone on one of the most famous beaches in the world. The cliffs of Positano loomed above us, shrouded in mist. We took photos that looked like they belonged in a different era, devoid of the modern crowds. We walked towards Torre la Trasita, the ancient watchtower that guards the coast, and explored the stone walkways that hug the cliffs.

Usually, we avoid this area on purpose to escape the chaos. Today, we embraced it because it felt like it belonged only to them.

The Pivot: When the Sea Says No

Our original timeline had a very specific plan: board a private boat at the Positano pier and sail to Marina di Praia for the second part of the shoot. It was a lovely plan. But the sea had other ideas. The waves were capping with white foam, and the boat captains—wisely—had cancelled all departures.

This is the moment that defines the experience of a wedding in Positano. You can panic, or you can pivot. We pivoted.

We had our car ready. Instead of the boat, we decided to drive to Marina di Praia. And honestly? I think this was the best thing that could have happened. The drive along the Amalfi Coast road is spectacular, even in the rain. The windows of the car were foggy, creating a cozy, intimate cocoon for Rebecca and Alexander.

This drive gave us time to bond. We talked, we laughed about the weather, we shared stories. By the time we reached Praiano, I wasn’t just their photographer; I felt like a friend witnessing their adventure. This human connection is what allows me to capture those unguarded, natural smiles. If you are stiff and stressed about the schedule, the photos look stiff. But Rebecca and Alexander were relaxed, trusting the process, and that energy shone through.

The Moody Magic of Marina di Praia

We arrived at Marina di Praia, a tiny fjord tucked between soaring cliffs. If Positano is the glamour queen, Marina di Praia is the mysterious, rugged sister. It is a place of fishermen, nets, and raw nature.

The rain started to drizzle again, but it didn’t matter. The high cliffs protected us from the wind. We walked towards the little church of Santa Maria dell’Annunziata. This church is a hidden gem. It has this incredible green door, an arched entrance that looks like a portal to another time. The green paint stood out vividly against the wet, grey stone of the church walls. We paused there for portraits. The colors were remarkable: the green door, Rebecca’s white dress, Alexander’s dark suit, and the glistening pavement. It felt cinematic.

From there, we took the path carved into the rock that leads to the Africana and the famous Il Pirata beach club. This path is one of the most evocative walkways on the coast. It is literally cut into the cliff face, hanging over the crashing waves.

The sea below was wild, a churning mass of deep blue and white foam. It was powerful and romantic. We used the architecture of the path—the stone railings, the winding curves—to frame the couple. At Il Pirata, the walkway opens up, and we utilized the space to capture wide, dramatic shots that showcased the power of nature surrounding them. The “wow” factor here wasn’t the sunset colors, but the sheer scale of the cliffs and the raw energy of the sea.

Sunset on the Road

As the day began to fade, we didn’t get a golden sunset. We got something else—a deep, blue twilight that fell over the coast like a velvet blanket. We stopped the car halfway along the coast, near Praiano, at a vantage point overlooking the sea.

The lights of the towns started to flicker on, reflecting in the wet roads and the dark water. We took the final photos there, with the couple silhouetted against the moody, blue light of the evening. It was the perfect ending to a day that had defied all expectations.

Why a “Rainy” Elopement beats a “Sunny” One

I want to pause the story for a moment to speak directly to you, the couple planning your wedding. I know you check the weather apps. I know you dream of blue skies. But looking back at Rebecca and Alexander’s photos, I want to make a case for the rain.

  • The Atmosphere: There is an intimacy to rain. It forces you to huddle closer together. It creates a mood of romance and “us against the world” that is impossible to replicate on a bright, hot day.
  • The Light: I cannot stress this enough. Clouds are nature’s filter. They soften the skin and make you look flawless. You don’t have to squint against the sun.
  • The Colors: Wet stone, wet leaves, and wet buildings have a saturation and depth that dry surfaces lack. The greens are greener; the blues are deeper.
  • The Privacy: This is the secret weapon. The rain clears the streets. We had locations to ourselves that are usually packed shoulder-to-shoulder with tourists.

The Importance of Local Knowledge

This elopement was a success not because we were lucky, but because we were prepared. As an Amalfi Coast wedding planner and photographer team, knowing the terrain is everything.

We knew that the Marincanto had covered terraces where we could shoot if the rain got too heavy. We knew that Marina di Praia offers shelter from the wind thanks to its position in the fjord. We knew exactly who to call when the boat was cancelled to get a luxury car on the spot. We knew the opening times of the access points to the beach.

This logistical mastery is what allows the couple to relax. Rebecca and Alexander didn’t have to worry about “what if.” They knew we had a plan B, C, and D. They could just focus on each other.

A Note on Rebecca and Alexander

I have photographed many couples, but these two will stick with me. Their attitude was the real magic of the day. Coming from the South, they brought a warmth and a grace that permeated every interaction. They treated the rain not as a disaster, but as a detail.

I recall a vivid moment. While walking back to the car from Il Pirata, her dress was damp at the hem, and his hair carried sea spray. They paused, looked at each other, and laughed with pure joy. They were married, in Italy, on an adventure. That connection, that human spark, makes these photos come alive. Beyond composition and exposure, the essence captured is the soul of the couple.

Crafting Your Own Story

Every elopement is different because every couple is different. But if there is one lesson to take from Rebecca and Alexander, it is this: let go of perfection and embrace the experience.
