When I first met Dylan and Yiling, it was like a sudden gust of wind from the Southern Hemisphere had swept into my studio, bringing with it a sense of familiarity that I hadn’t felt in years. They are both from Melbourne, Australia, a city that holds a profound, almost sacred place in my personal history. You see, long before I became a professional Sorrento wedding photographer, I was a student of light and shadows in Australia.

I studied photography in Sydney, and although the rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne is legendary among Australians, to me, they are two sides of a magnificent coin. There is a specific energy to Australians—a blend of genuine warmth, an easygoing nature, and an unapologetic sincerity—that resonates with my own soul.

From the moment Dylan and Yiling started talking about their vision for a wedding in Sorrento, I knew this wasn’t going to be just another assignment. It was a reunion. Their accents, their specific turns of phrase, and even the way they laughed reminded me so much of the friends I lived with and the people I photographed during my formative years in the Land Down Under.

It felt as if a piece of my younger self, the one who wandered the streets of Paddington and the beaches of Bondi with a film camera, had suddenly walked through the door. This connection is vital in my work. When I feel that bond with a couple, the camera ceases to be a barrier; it becomes an extension of our shared experience.

They had chosen to anchor their celebration at the Relais Blu in Massa Lubrense, a venue that is the epitome of contemporary Mediterranean elegance, but they were determined to let Sorrento play a starring role in their journey. For their Australian family and friends, many of whom were visiting Italy for the first time, they wanted to create a narrative that moved from the historic, sun-drenched streets of Sorrento to the wild, rugged beauty of the Massa Lubrense coastline. As we plotted the day’s events, I realized my role as a sorrento wedding planner of sorts—not just a photographer, but a guide who would help them navigate the timing of the light and the hidden rhythms of the peninsula to ensure every moment was perfect.

The Morning Glow: Getting Ready in a Sorrento Sanctuary

The day began in a stunning villa tucked away in the hills overlooking Sorrento. This is where Yiling, with her quiet grace and architect’s eye for symmetry, chose to prepare for the biggest day of her life.

The morning light in Sorrento is different from anywhere else in the world. It’s a soft, filtered glow that carries the scent of lemon blossoms and the salt of the Tyrrhenian Sea. I arrived to find Yiling in the talented hands of Jinema Puy, a makeup artist whose work I have admired for years. Jinema doesn’t just apply makeup; she understands how light interacts with skin, which is exactly why she is a perfect fit for the high-contrast environment of Southern Italy.

The atmosphere in the bridal suite was a mix of serene anticipation and bursts of Australian laughter. As Yiling sat by a large window, the light sculpted her features beautifully. I spent those early hours capturing what I call the “silent chapters” of the wedding day—the way the lace of her gown lay against the vintage furniture, the delicate application of perfume, and the shared glances between her and her bridesmaids.

There is a specific architectural quality to Yiling’s movements; she understands space and form, and it was a joy to document her within the context of the villa’s classical lines.

While I was with the bride, my closest collaborator and friend, Felice, was in the heart of Sorrento with Dylan. One of the strengths of our studio is this dual perspective. While I was focused on the delicate details of the bridal preparations, Felice was at the Chiostro di San Francesco, capturing the groom’s more grounded, stoic energy.

Dylan, an engineer, has a precision to him that matches Yiling’s architectural sensibility. They are a couple built on foundations of structure and beauty, and seeing them prepare in two different but equally iconic locations was the perfect prologue to their union. Dylan spent his morning near the ancient 14th-century arches of the cloister, a place that would soon witness their vows.

The Chiostro di San Francesco: A Ceremony of Stone and Soul

The civil ceremony took place at the Chiostro di San Francesco, a location that I believe is the most romantic spot in the entire world for a wedding. There is something about the way the light hits those interlacing arches—a remnant of the 1300s—that creates an atmosphere of timelessness. It is a place where history feels alive, where every stone has a story to tell.

For an Australian couple traveling halfway across the globe, the contrast between the modern world they live in and the ancient sanctuary of the cloister was breathtaking.

The ceremony was incredibly emotional. Even though it was a civil service, it had the weight and gravity of a centuries-old ritual, largely due to the words spoken. The celebrant, Carmela, has a way of crafting ceremonies that feel deeply personal and unique. Dylan and Yiling spoke their own vows, and listening to them, I could hear the depth of their commitment—an engineer and an architect promising to build a life as enduring as the stone arches surrounding them. There were tears, not just from the couple, but from their friends who had traveled thousands of miles to stand in that courtyard.

As they walked back down the aisle as husband and wife, the silence of the cloister was shattered by a joyous roar. Their guests had prepared bags of colorful petals, and as the couple emerged, they were engulfed in a flurry of pink and white. It was one of those moments that is a dream for a photographer—the high-contrast light, the flying petals, and the raw, uninhibited joy on the faces of the newlyweds.

We captured the screams of delight, the hugs, and the first few seconds of their new life together against the backdrop of the verdant plants and ancient stone of the courtyard.

Iconic Sorrento: The Descent and the Lemon Grove

Immediately following the ceremony, we took the couple for a walk through the heart of Sorrento. We started with the iconic descent of the piazza, just below the Church of San Francesco. This ramp, with its high stone walls and the glimpse of the sea in the distance, is a quintessential Sorrento shot, but it requires a master’s touch to handle the crowds. My years of experience have taught me exactly how to time these shots between the waves of tourists, creating a sense of intimacy even in the middle of a bustling town.

From there, we moved to I Giardini di Cataldo. If you’ve never been, it’s a legendary lemon grove right in the center of Sorrento, a hidden oasis of green and yellow. We are always welcomed there like family, and on this day, the staff was exceptionally kind. Seeing the couple, radiant and happy, they insisted on offering them—and us—something to drink. It was a moment of true Italian hospitality that reminded me why I love my job.

We spent some time inside the grove, where the light is filtered through the thick canopy of citrus leaves, creating a soft, emerald-toned glow that is incredibly flattering.

HOW WE CAN WORK OUT TOGETHER WITH A GREAT CONNECTION

If you think of hiring me, it means that you share this vision and we have many things in common. My work is based on our connection as well as my experience.

The garden provided a beautiful textural contrast to the stone of the cloister. Here, amongst the gnarled trunks of the lemon trees and the scent of ripening fruit, Dylan and Yiling could finally take a breath and just be with each other. I watched them through my lens, seeing how they navigated the space together. There is a silent communication between an engineer and an architect—a shared understanding of balance and harmony—and it was visible in every gesture. These are the intense, quiet moments that I strive to capture, the ones that tell the true story of a couple’s connection.

No wedding in Sorrento is complete without a vintage car, and for Dylan and Yiling, we had a classic that looked like it had driven straight out of a 1960s film set. We left the bustling center of Sorrento and began the climb toward Massa Lubrense. This part of the coast is where the landscape starts to get wilder, more dramatic, and infinitely more beautiful.

We stopped at a panoramic viewpoint that I often suggest to my couples—a secret terrace that juts out over the sea, offering a direct view of the island of Capri. The light at this time of day began to shift into the “golden hour,” that magical window where the sun turns the water into a shimmering sheet of sapphire and gold. Dylan and Yiling stepped out of the car, and for a moment, they just stood there, mesmerized by the view. Capri sat on the horizon like a silent witness to their love.

I love these transitional moments. The car, the winding road, the sudden expanse of the sea—it all adds to the narrative of a journey. As a photographer, my job is to manage the logistics of these stops, knowing exactly when the light will be at its peak and ensuring we arrive at the reception venue at the perfect time.

We spent a few minutes on that terrace, the wind catching Yiling’s veil, creating shots that felt expansive and cinematic. It was the perfect bridge between the historic charm of Sorrento and the modern luxury that awaited them at Relais Blu.

Relais Blu: Architecture, Engineering, and a Pool Party

Arriving at Relais Blu in Massa Lubrense is like entering a different world. It is a sanctuary of “silent luxury,” a boutique hotel defined by its minimalist white lines and its stunning integration into the surrounding nature. For a couple like Dylan and Yiling, whose lives are dedicated to design and construction, this venue was a masterstroke of selection. It is a place where architecture meets the horizon, where every terrace is a platform for viewing the infinite.

When we pulled into the driveway, we were greeted by an unexpected and hilarious sight: nearly all of their Australian guests were already in the infinity pool! It was a quintessential Aussie move—laid-back, fun, and completely unpretentious.

While the guests were splashing around in their swimwear, Dylan and Yiling, still in their wedding finery, moved through the venue with a grace that was beautiful to behold.

FEEL VIBES

It was during this time that we took one of my favorite photos of the day. The florists were still at work, and a large wooden ladder was standing in the middle of a terrace. Most photographers would have asked to move it, but I saw an opportunity. I remembered that they had met on a construction site in Melbourne.

I asked them to pose on and around the ladder. The contrast of their elegant wedding clothes against the raw tool of construction was a perfect metaphor for their relationship—a beautiful structure built on a foundation of hard work and shared professional passion. It’s these anecdotes, these small personal touches, that make a wedding album feel alive.

The Orange Symphony: A Sunset Reception

As the evening approached, the reception terrace at Relais Blu was transformed. The couple had chosen a floral setting dominated by vibrant orange tones, a choice that was both daring and inspired. Against the deep blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the white walls of the hotel, the orange blooms looked like fragments of the sunset that had been captured and placed on the tables. It was a masterclass in color theory, and it photographed spectacularly.

The cocktail hour was a sensory delight. A saxophonist played smooth, soulful melodies that drifted on the evening breeze, while guests enjoyed aperitifs on the panoramic terrace. This is when the light at Relais Blu truly shines.

Because the venue faces west, it enjoys one of the longest and most beautiful sunsets on the coast. I was in my element, moving through the crowd to capture the candid interactions of friends who hadn’t seen each other in years, all bathed in that soft, flattering orange glow.

For couples considering Relais Blu, I am always happy to recommend these trusted professionals who can help make the planning process as smooth as possible.

The dining area, with its massive glass windows, allowed the guests to feel as though they were floating between the sea and the sky. As the sun finally dipped below the horizon, leaving a trail of purple and gold in its wake, the candles were lit, and the atmosphere shifted from the energetic joy of the afternoon to a warm, intimate elegance. As an expert in light, I know that this transition is critical. We work closely with the venue to ensure the artificial lighting complements the natural twilight, preserving the mood of the evening in every frame.

Speeches from the Heart: The Melbourne Connection

The dinner was defined by the speeches. In my experience, Australian weddings are world-class when it comes to the “speeches” portion of the evening. Dylan and Yiling’s guests did not disappoint. There were many of them, and they were long, but every word was infused with such genuine emotion that no one wanted them to end. Between the tears and the roaring laughter, I saw the story of Dylan and Yiling’s lives unfold—their individual journeys from Melbourne to this terrace in Italy, and the beautiful partnership they had built along the way.

As I photographed the guests’ reactions—the wiped-away tears, the thrown-back heads in laughter—I felt that deep connection to my own Australian past once again. There is a way that Australians tell stories—with a mix of self-deprecating humor and profound sincerity—that is truly unique.

It was a night of unforgettable speeches that turned a luxury dinner into a deeply personal family gathering. Capturing these raw emotions is what I do best; I don’t just take pictures of what people look like, I take pictures of what they are feeling.

The speeches were a testament to the fact that while the scenery was Italian, the heart of this wedding was Melbourne. It was a bridge between two cultures, two hemispheres, and two beautiful souls. As the last toast was raised and the glasses clinked, the room was filled with a sense of immense gratitude. It was an honor to be the one to document these moments, to be the witness to a love that had traveled so far to find its home on this cliffside.

Folk Rhythms and the Midnight Cake

For the finale of the evening, we moved to the lower level of Relais Blu for the party and the cutting of the cake. Dylan and Yiling had made a choice that I found deeply moving: they wanted traditional Italian folk and popular music for their cake cutting. It was a beautiful nod to the traditions of the land that had hosted them. The sound of the tarantella filled the air, and suddenly, the contemporary minimalist space of the hotel was vibrantly alive with the ancient rhythms of the South.

The cutting of the cake was a moment of pure, unadulterated fun. Surrounded by their friends, Dylan and Yiling laughed and danced to the folk music, a perfect blend of their Australian energy and the Italian spirit. As a photographer, I love the energy of the dance floor. The challenge is to maintain the quality of the light while capturing the fast-paced movement of the dancers. My studio is equipped to handle these shifting environments, using discrete lighting techniques to ensure the party photos are just as stunning as the sunset portraits.

The night ended with the guests dancing under the stars, the lights of Capri twinkling in the distance. It was a day that had begun in the quiet hills of Sorrento, moved through the historic stones of the Chiostro, and ended on this modern terrace in Massa Lubrense. It was a perfect narrative, a story of two people who understand the importance of both history and design, of both tradition and modern life. Dylan and Yiling’s wedding was a masterpiece of planning and emotion, and I feel so lucky to have been part of it.

The Art of the Experience: Light, Logistics, and Local Secrets

What many couples don’t realize when they book a photographer is that they are also booking a logistical expert. Especially in a place as beautiful but complex as Sorrento and Massa Lubrense, knowing the “unspoken rules” of the region is what makes the difference between a stressful day and a perfect experience. My studio specializes in this. We don’t just show up and shoot; we suggest the exact hours when the Chiostro di San Francesco is less crowded, and we know which side-streets in Sorrento offer the best light without the tourists.

For a wedding at Relais Blu, timing is everything. Because it is one of the few west-facing venues on the coast, the light behaves differently there than it does in Positano or Amalfi. We understand how to master that intense afternoon sun and how to transition into the “blue hour” that follows the sunset. We also know the logistics of the venue—how to move a large group of people from the pool area to the cocktail terrace seamlessly, and where the best hidden terraces are for those private couple portraits.

This expertise allows us to transform a wedding into an effortless experience. For Dylan and Yiling, it meant they never had to worry about a thing. They could focus on each other and their guests, knowing that we were handling the clock and the light. Whether it’s knowing when the lemon groves are at their most fragrant or which viewpoint in Massa Lubrense has the clearest view of the islands, our local knowledge is the secret ingredient in every photo we take. We are more than just photographers; we are the guardians of your memories and the architects of your perfect day.

A Personal Reflection: The Sydney Boy and the Melbourne Couple

As I look back at the images of Dylan and Yiling, I realize that this wedding was a gift to me as well. It’s not often that you find a couple whose energy so perfectly aligns with your own past. Standing on that terrace at Relais Blu, listening to the Australian accents and watching the sun set over the sea, I felt a circle closing. The young man who went to Sydney to study the art of photography would be proud to see the work I am doing now, capturing the stories of people from the very place that gave me my start.

Every wedding I photograph is a new adventure, but the ones like this—where there is a deep, emotional connection to the couple and their culture—are the ones that stay with me forever. Dylan and Yiling are two extraordinary individuals, and their wedding was a reflection of their intelligence, their humor, and their profound love for one another. I am honored to have been their sorrento wedding photographer, and I am so grateful for the piece of Melbourne they brought into my life.

To anyone considering a wedding at Relais Blu or in the beautiful town of Sorrento, I say this: follow your heart, find a photographer who understands your soul, and let the magic of this coastline do the rest. Whether you are an engineer, an architect, or a dreamer, there is a place for you here. And if you’re from Australia, know that you’ll find a piece of home waiting for you in my studio.

Planning your wedding should be filled with joy, not stress. With experienced local wedding planners, a breathtaking venue like Relais Blu, and a passionate photography team like ours, you can be confident that your wedding day will be unforgettable. It will be a day you look back on with nothing but happiness for years to come.
