START PLANNING YOUR WEDDING IN LAKE COMO

Rachel and Conner share a tender moment during their lake Como elopement, with a picturesque lake and mountains in the background.

There is a specific kind of magic that happens when the warmth of Southern hospitality meets the timeless elegance of the Italian lakes. When Rachel and Conner reached out to me from Nashville, Tennessee, I knew their day would be something special. Nashville is a place where traditions run deep and the soul is always on display, and as a Lake Como wedding photographer, I have always believed that the most beautiful images aren’t just seen—they are felt. Their choice for a Lake Como Elopement wasn’t just about a beautiful backdrop; it was about finding a place that echoed the sincerity of their connection.

Technically, we might call it a micro wedding due to the presence of their closest family and friends, but it carried every ounce of the intimacy and freedom that defines a true elopement. There was no “show-off” attitude, no forced poses: just two people, deeply in love, moving through some of the most beautiful landscapes on earth with a disarming sense of ease.

From Nashville to the Shores of Lario: A Meeting of Worlds

Nashville and Lake Como might be separated by an ocean, but they share a common thread of storytelling. In Tennessee, stories are told through music and songwriting; here in Italy, we tell them through light and stone. Rachel and Conner brought that Nashville heart to the silent, aristocratic shores of Laglio, creating a bridge between the “Southern Spring” vibe they love and the “Dolce Vita” we live every day.

As a Lake Como wedding photographer, I often find that my best work comes when I connect personally with a couple. With Rachel and Conner, the connection was instant. They were “disinvolti”: at ease, natural, and genuinely interested in experiencing the lake rather than just “shooting” it. This perspective is what allows us to transform a wedding into a perfect experience.

The Morning Stillness at Relais Villa Vittoria

The day began at Relais Villa Vittoria, a boutique gem tucked away in the quiet village of Laglio. If you are looking for the “quiet side” of the lake, away from the bustling crowds of Bellagio, this is it. The villa is a 19th-century residence that once enchanted poets and writers, and you can still feel that creative, contemplative energy in its hallways.

The Scent of History in the Mulberry Gardens

One of the things I love most about Villa Vittoria is its history. In the second half of the 19th century, the villa’s garden was a thriving mulberry grove used for raising silkworms. This sericulture is what made the Como area famous worldwide for its precious silks. Today, that heritage lives on in the delicate textures and refined atmosphere of the property.

Rachel prepared in one of the most exclusive suites, a space where the soft morning light filtered through large windows, illuminating her details: the shoes, the gown, the rings. The suite, with its antique fireplaces and silk wall coverings, felt like a haven of peace. While she was surrounded by her sister and best friends, the atmosphere was calm: a soft chiacchiericcio punctuated only by the occasional pop of a prosecco cork.

Outside, the villa’s “verde strutturato”, its structured greenery, descends gracefully toward the water, featuring arches and a stunning infinity pool that seems to merge with the lake’s surface. I took Rachel out onto the balcony for some bridal portraits. The view from there is a masterpiece: the deep teal of the water reflecting the mountains, with only the occasional ripple from a passing boat.

An Emotional Prelude in the Main Hall

Meanwhile, Conner was in the hall with his mother. There is a specific kind of tenderness in those moments before a ceremony: a mix of pride and anticipation. Later, Rachel met her father in the hall. He had written a message for her, a handwritten letter that brought a quiet shimmer of tears to her eyes. Capturing these moments requires a “human touch”. I don’t believe in technical perfection at the cost of emotion; I believe in being a “visual expert” who knows when to step back and let the story unfold naturally.

A Cinematic Crossing to Villa del Balbianello

When it was time to move toward the ceremony, the logistics had to be flawless. This is where our expertise in wedding in Lake Como planning and photography really shines. On Lake Como, the water isn’t just a view—it’s the primary road. We arranged for two elegant wooden launches to transport the party to Villa del Balbianello.

Conner left first, cutting through the morning mist. Shortly after, Rachel followed with her parents. Seeing a bride on a vintage boat, her veil dancing in the wind as the historic villas of the western shore glide by, is a sight that never gets old. It feels like a scene from a classic Italian film. We guided the boats to ensure we arrived at the perfect time, avoiding the busiest docking windows to maintain that sense of private exclusivity.

A Lake Como wedding one-of-a-kind experience

Why is a Lake Como Wedding a special experience? First of all, because Lake Como has a lot to offer: beach, hills, sea, mountains, fabulous cities, culture, ancient atmosphere, delicious food, elegance. When I have been hired to be a Wedding Photographer in Italy, I’ve had the opportunity to appreciate all the special features of a Italy-Style Wedding.

Vows Under the Arches: The Magic of Loggia Durini

Villa del Balbianello is, without comparison, the most iconic venue on the lake. Perched on the tip of the Dosso di Lavedo peninsula, it feels like it’s floating between the water and the sky. While Rachel and Conner held their main reception at Villa Vittoria, they chose Balbianello for their symbolic ceremony, specifically under the famous Loggia Durini.

The Loggia is a three-arched structure adorned with a fitta vegetazione—thick evergreen creepers that are meticulously hand-pruned every year. It offers a 360-degree view of the lake, framing the landscape with architectural precision

Rachel was accompanied by her father under the pergolato, where Conner was waiting. The ceremony was a reflection of who they are: lighthearted, sincere, and full of laughter. Their promises weren’t just romantic; they were “divertenti”, funny and deeply personal. As they spoke, the soft lake breeze (the Breva wind) moved through the arches, and the entire group was enveloped in a sense of joy that was entirely unpretentious.

Light, Shadow, and the Iconic “Mushroom” Tree

After the ceremony, we explored the villa’s grounds for their portraits. We moved from the high point of the Loggia down to the lower terraces, where the famous “umbrella-shaped” holm oak stands. This tree is a marvel of landscape art; every year, two gardeners spend two weeks “wearing” the tree on ladders, meticulously pruning it with scissors to maintain its perfect dome shape.

The light that day was a photographer’s dream. The sky was covered with soft clouds, acting as a giant, natural softbox. This kind of light is actually my favorite; it eliminates harsh shadows, makes the colors of the lake pop, and gives the skin a luminous, ethereal quality. I utilized a mix of wide-angle shots to showcase the majesty of the architecture and close-ups to capture their engagement and reactions. My goal is always to balance the “editorial” look of a magazine with the “raw emotion” of a real story.

Returning to the Heart of Laglio

As the sun began to dip lower, we boarded the boats once more to return to Villa Vittoria. During the ride, we positioned the boat to have Villa del Balbianello as a dramatic backdrop. These are the moments where “visual logistics” matter most—knowing exactly where the sun will be behind the mountains and how the water reflects the light.

Back at the villa, the atmosphere shifted to one of pure celebration. We captured group photos in the gardens by the infinity pool, followed by a spontaneous cocktail hour. There is a unique beauty in “spontaneous photography”, catching the laughter during a toast or the way friends lean in to share a secret.

Candlelight and Laughter: Dinner Under the Pergola

The climax of the evening was the dinner under the villa’s grand pergola. Long tables were set with elegant simplicity, but it was the candles that truly transformed the space. As night fell, hundreds of small flames began to flicker, their light reflecting off the crystal glasses and the dark water of the lake just a few meters away.

There were no formal speeches: only a continuous flow of laughter and conversation. Rachel and Conner wanted an “experience,” not a performance, and that’s exactly what they got. We worked with their Lake Como wedding planner to ensure the timing was perfect, allowing the meal to unfold at its own pace.

The Finale: A Tower of Champagne and a First Dance

The evening concluded with two iconic moments. First, the “tower of champagne”: a fun, dynamic spectacle where Rachel and Conner poured prosecco from the top glass, watching it cascade down in a waterfall of bubbles. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated fun.

Finally, they shared their first dance under the pergola. No choreography, no spotlights, just two people swaying to a melody that meant something to them, surrounded by the scent of jasmine and the soft sounds of the lake at night. It was the perfect end to a day that was as soulful as a Nashville ballad and as elegant as a Como sunset.

The Art of the Perfect Moment: Our Philosophy

What makes a wedding like Rachel and Conner’s successful isn’t just the location; it’s the mastery of the invisible details. As a studio, we pride ourselves on our ability to manage the complex logistics of the lake—knowing which docks are accessible, how to avoid the “peak” tourist hours at Balbianello, and where to find the best light even on a cloudy day.

Why Light and Timing Matter

On Lake Como, light is a living thing. It changes as it reflects off the mountains and the water. We know that the “Golden Hour” here starts earlier than people expect because of the high peaks, and we know how to use the “Blue Hour” to create cinematic, moody portraits that look like stills from a film. We also understand how to find “quiet corners” even in iconic villas, ensuring our couples feel like they are in their own private world.

A Personal Anecdote: The Silent Boat Ride

I remember one specific moment from Rachel and Conner’s day that wasn’t in the “plan.” It was on the boat ride back from the ceremony. They were sitting on the stern, the wind was a bit chilly, and Conner simply wrapped his jacket around Rachel’s shoulders. They didn’t say a word for five minutes; they just looked out at the lake, taking a deep breath of the “pure air”. I took a shot from the front of the boat using a long lens. It wasn’t a “posed” moment, but it was perhaps the most “Rachel and Conner” moment of the whole day. This is what I mean by empathy—being there to catch the truth, not just the event.

Rachel and Conner’s Lake Como Elopement was a reminder that when you strip away the excess, what remains is the heartbeat of the celebration. It was a day of “disinvoltura,” where luxury felt natural and intimacy felt grand. They didn’t just have a wedding in Italy; they lived an experience that will stay with them, and their families, for a lifetime.

If you are dreaming of your own escape to the shores of Lario, know that we are here to guide you. We don’t just take pictures; we curate the light, manage the logistics, and help you find the quiet, less crowded spots that make the lake feel like your own private garden. Whether you are coming from Nashville or anywhere else in the world, your story deserves to be told with the same soulful sincerity that Rachel and Conner brought to our shores.
