When that thick, beautifully letterpressed envelope arrives in the mail and you realize you have been invited to a wedding on the Amalfi Coast, a specific kind of excitement sets in. You picture the cascading pastel houses, the endless Mediterranean blue, and the sparkling Aperol Spritzes. But soon after the excitement, a very practical panic usually follows: What on earth do I pack?
As a local Positano wedding photographer, I have spent years capturing Americans celebrating in my hometown. I have seen guests look effortlessly glamorous, blending perfectly into the coastal vibe. Unfortunately, I have also seen guests melting in heavy fabrics or physically unable to walk to the reception because of their shoe choices. Positano is wildly beautiful, but it is also a vertical labyrinth of steep lanes and endless stairs.
If you are packing your bags for an Italian wedding weekend, here is my insider advice on how to look incredible, stay comfortable, and survive the unique terrain of the coast.

Beating the Mediterranean Heat: Choose Your Fabrics Wisely
If you are attending a summer wedding here, you need to respect the Italian sun. Temperatures can get very warm, and you will likely be spending a significant amount of time outdoors on sun-drenched terraces. Your fabric choice will make or break your experience.
You must prioritize natural, breathable fibers over heavy synthetics. I always recommend lightweight silk blends, chiffon, or silk georgette. These fabrics offer a gorgeous, floaty silhouette that moves beautifully in the coastal breeze and photographs like an absolute dream. Viscose is another excellent option because it mimics the luxurious drape of silk but is often much lighter and breathable.
If you are attending a daytime event or a welcome party, linen is your best friend. It is a champion at keeping you cool and naturally wicks away moisture. For the gentlemen, a tailored linen or light cotton suit in soft beige, light grey, or navy is the absolute gold standard for effortless Italian elegance. You can often skip the tie if the couple is hosting a more relaxed seaside welcome dinner.
The Footwear Reality: Surviving the Cobblestones
Let me share a quick story. I will never forget a spectacular wedding I photographed a couple of years ago. A lovely guest from New York arrived in breathtaking, needle-thin six-inch stilettos. By the time she navigated the short walk from the piazza to the reception, she had surrendered and was walking barefoot across the ancient stones.
Positano is built entirely on a cliffside. You will be walking on uneven cobblestones, climbing steep staircases, and navigating historical pathways. I cannot stress this enough: leave the stilettos at home.
If you want height, wedges are the perfect coastal choice because they give you stability without sinking into the gaps between the paving stones. Elegant block heels or dressy, embellished flats are also fantastic options that will allow you to dance the night away and walk back to your hotel without twisting an ankle.

Decoding the Italian Church Dress Code
If the couple has opted for a traditional Catholic ceremony, you need to be aware of the strict modesty rules enforced in Italian places of worship.
Italian churches require guests to have their shoulders, chest, and knees covered out of respect for the sacred space. Bare shoulders and plunging necklines will likely result in you being politely asked to cover up, or worse, being denied entry at the door,.
The most stylish and practical workaround for this is to bring a beautiful, lightweight shawl, wrap, or pashmina. You can drape an elegant silk or linen stole over your shoulders for the duration of the ceremony to ensure you meet the modesty requirements. Once you step back outside into the sunshine for the cocktail hour, you can simply slip it off and show off your dress.
Of course, if the couple is hosting a symbolic wedding ceremony in Positano on a private hotel terrace or overlooking the sea, these religious dress codes do not apply, and you have much more freedom with your neckline and sleeves.

Embracing the Coastal Palette
When in doubt about colors, look at the landscape around you. The Amalfi Coast is a vibrant explosion of color, and your wardrobe should reflect that joyful energy.
Avoid wearing white or ivory, as those shades are strictly reserved for the bride. While black is always chic, an afternoon Italian wedding is the perfect excuse to step away from dark, heavy tones. Instead, embrace the Mediterranean palette: think soft pastels like blush, mint, and lavender, or dive into rich jewel tones like sapphire, emerald, and vibrant terracotta,. Gentle Mediterranean motifs and subtle floral prints also look incredibly elegant against the backdrop of the sea.
Attending an event here is an unforgettable experience. By packing smart fabrics, sensible (but chic) shoes, and a handy shawl, you will be fully prepared to soak in the romance and the beauty of the coast.
