I have spent a significant portion of my life wandering through the rolling hills of Southern Tuscany with a camera in my hand, and if there is one thing I have learned, it is that the Val d’Orcia is not just a place on a map; it is a feeling that settles deep in your bones. When people across the Atlantic close their eyes and dream of Tuscany, they are usually dreaming of this specific valley, with its perfectly spaced cypress trees, golden wheat fields, and medieval villages that look like they were carved out of the earth itself. For a wedding, this landscape is not just a background; it is a guest, a witness, and a character in your story.

For my US couples, the appeal is often the “freedom” that this land offers. We live in a world of rigid schedules and heavy bureaucracy, but when you step into the Val d’Orcia, time seems to slow down. They hired a British architect named Cecil Pinsent to design the gardens, and the result is one of the most famous examples of horticultural art in Italy.   

As a photographer, La Foce is a dream because it offers so many different “rooms”. You have the formal Italian gardens with their geometric hedges, the wisteria-covered pergolas, and the travertine staircase that leads to a romantic rose garden. And, of course, there is that signature cypress-lined road that zig-zags through the hills—it is perhaps the most iconic road in all of Tuscany.   

For weddings, the ideal group size is between 80 and 120 people. I love shooting ceremonies here because the gardens provide a structured, elegant frame that contrasts beautifully with the wild, rolling hills in the background. Dinner is often held on the gravel area by the ancient holly oaks, which provides a timeless, atmospheric setting as the sun goes down. It is a place that feels deeply human and intentionally crafted.

Castello Banfi: Grandeur in the Heart of the Vineyards

Perched on a hilltop near Montalcino, Castello Banfi is for those who want their wedding to be an immersion into the prestigious wine culture of Tuscany. This 18th-century castle is surrounded by miles of vineyards, and the views from its terraces are simply breathtaking.   

What I love about Banfi is the texture of the stone. The ancient archways and refined courtyards offer a grand, opulent backdrop that feels both historic and welcoming. It is an ideal spot for a lavish celebration where the wine—the world-famous Brunello—is just as much of a star as the setting.   

From a photography perspective, the opportunities are boundless. I often take my couples into the vineyards for portraits during the golden hour, where the rows of vines create beautiful leading lines that draw the eye toward the sunset. The interiors are just as elegant, offering a sense of “Old World” luxury that is perfect for intimate indoor shots if the weather doesn’t cooperate. 

Borgo Santo Pietro: A Fairytale Sanctuary

For my couples who want a more boutique, intimate, and serene experience, Borgo Santo Pietro is a true gem. Located near Chiusdino, this 13th-century villa has been transformed into a luxury sanctuary where nature and luxury are completely intertwined.   

The gardens here are incredible—you have fountains, flower-filled archways, and even a private river. It feels like a storybook setting. I particularly enjoy the way the light filters through the wisteria. The estate also produces its own organic honey, cheese, and wine, and the food at their Michelin-starred restaurant, Meo Modo, is something your guests will talk about for years.   

It is a place where “slow luxury” is the rule. Everything feels intentional and deeply rooted in the land. Nearby, you have the ruins of the Abbey of San Galgano, which is one of the most mystical and stunning places in Italy for a ceremony.

Castiglion del Bosco: The Ultimate Private Escape

If exclusivity and privacy are your top priorities, Castiglion del Bosco is the pinnacle. This estate is essentially a restored medieval village that is now a Rosewood resort, and it is one of the most prestigious wedding venues in the world.   

The property is vast, featuring its own 17th-century church, a winery, and even a private golf course. What makes it special for me as a photographer is the variety of settings. You can have a ceremony in the ancient church, an aperitivo overlooking the vineyards, and a reception in the grand castle ruins. The views of the valley at sunset are unparalleled.   

It is a venue that handles large, complex events with a “military-grade” level of service, ensuring that every detail is perfect. For a destination wedding, it offers a completely self-contained experience where your guests can stay on-site and fully immerse themselves in the Tuscan lifestyle.   

Monteverdi Tuscany: A Hilltop Village of Your Own

Monteverdi is a unique concept—it is a boutique hotel that is actually a restored hilltop village overlooking the Orcia valley. It blends historic charm with a very contemporary, sophisticated luxury.   

I love the Romanesque church from the 14th century for ceremonies—it is intimate and has a very spiritual, quiet atmosphere. The village itself has narrow stone streets, art galleries, and a world-class spa based on ancient thermal traditions. Because it is a village, it offers a sense of privacy and community that is hard to find elsewhere. There are no paved roads or sidewalks here; it is just pure, unadulterated Tuscan history.   

Podere Conti: Rustic Serenity Near Pienza

For couples who want an uncomplicated, authentic, and intimate experience, Podere Conti is one of my favorite spots. It is a lovingly restored farmhouse near Pienza, surrounded by rolling fields and age-old olive groves.   

The charm here is in the simplicity. It is the embodiment of “rustic chic”. I love shooting ceremonies under the ancient olive branches, where the sunlight filters through the leaves in a way that feels very natural and pure. It is a versatile location that keeps the focus on the connection between the couple and their closest friends and family. It feels like a real home.   

Locanda in Tuscany: Relaxed Luxury and Infinity Pools

Located near Castiglione d’Orcia, Locanda in Tuscany is a country retreat that offers an escape from the ordinary. It has a very relaxed, yet luxurious atmosphere that I find very appealing for modern couples.   

The infinity pool overlooking the countryside is a highlight, especially during the golden hour when the landscape transforms into a scene from a painting. It allows you to blend sophisticated luxury with the simple pleasures of the countryside—great food, beautiful views, and a sense of total calm.

The 3-Day Tuscan Journey: Why It Matters

When you fly from the US to Italy, you don’t want a “one-day” wedding. You want a journey. Most of the weddings I capture are 3-day events, and I believe this is the secret to a successful destination wedding. It gives people time to connect, to breathe, and to actually experience the place.   

Day One: The Welcome Pizza Party

The first day is all about setting the tone. I highly recommend a relaxed pizza party. Imagine long wooden tables under string lights, the smell of wood-fired dough, and plenty of local wine. This is where the jet lag starts to fade and your families start to blend. As a photographer, I love this evening because everyone is relaxed, the laughter is genuine, and it allows me to capture the “warm-up” moments of the weekend.   

Day Two: The Main Event

This is the day we have been planning for months. We keep the morning slow—sleep in, have a long breakfast, and enjoy the “getting ready” process with your best friends. My team and I arrive to capture the details—the dress hanging in the light, the nerves, the quiet moments of reflection.   

The ceremony usually happens in the late afternoon, around 4:30 PM or 5:30 PM, depending on the season, to catch the best light. Then we move to the aperitivo, followed by a multi-course dinner under the stars. The speeches, the cake cutting, and the party follow. Because we have managed the “Visual Logistics,” you never feel rushed. You are just existing in the moment.   

Day Three: The Poolside Chill

The final day is for recovery and one last shared memory. A lazy brunch and a pool party is the ultimate Italian way to say goodbye. Swimwear, sunglasses, Aperol Spritz, and relaxed conversations. It is the perfect “bubble” to end the experience before everyone heads back to reality. Some of my couples even do a “day-after” portrait session in their wedding outfits but in a more casual, fun way. 

Mastering the Light: A Month-by-Month Guide

Tuscany changes color faster than you might realize, and the ” agricultural calendar” dictates the look of your photos.   

• September and October: My personal favorite. The “Golden Fade”. The light is lower, softer, and incredibly creamy. The hills are being plowed into that beautiful burnt sienna color, creating a more textured, earthy landscape.
• April and May: The hills are a vibrant, lush green. Poppies start to appear, and the air is fresh. The light is energetic but can be unpredictable, so a good “Plan B” is a must.   
• June and July: This is the “Gold Rush”. The wheat turns golden brown, and the days are long and hot. This is when we have to be very careful with the 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM zone.   

Logistics for My US Couples: Making it Simple

I know that the idea of moving 50 or 100 people across the world is daunting. But after years of working with international couples, I have a few tips to make it effortless.   

Getting Here

Most of your guests will fly into Rome (Fiumicino) or Florence. Rome is about a 2.5 to 3-hour drive, and Florence is about 1.5 to 2 hours. I always suggest renting a car—it is the best way to explore the little villages and hidden spots at your own pace. If you want to arrive in style, we can even arrange for a vintage Alfa Romeo or a classic Fiat 500.   

The Legal Part

Dealing with Italian bureaucracy can be “paralyzing” if you don’t know the rules. You need a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) and a Nulla Osta. To make it easier, many of my couples do the “official” paperwork in the US and have a symbolic ceremony here. A symbolic ceremony gives you total freedom—you can say your vows anywhere, at any time, without any rigid scripts.   

Guest Experience

One big concern is that guests might feel “trapped” in the countryside. But in Val d’Orcia, there is so much to do. Between wedding events, they can go truffle hunting, do a pasta-making class, visit the thermal baths in Bagno Vignoni, or do a wine tasting in Montalcino. They won’t just be guests at a wedding; they will be on the vacation of a lifetime.   

Secret Photo Spots You Won’t Find in the Guidebooks

While everyone knows the famous chapel of Vitaleta and the San Quirico cypresses, my studio has mapped out some hidden gems that offer total privacy and incredible light.   

• Lucignano d’Asso: A tiny, quiet medieval hamlet that most tourists miss. It is perfect for those “hide and seek” couple photos where you want to feel like you are the only two people left in the world.   
• Biancane di Leonina: These are white clay dunes that look like another planet. They turn a brilliant white when the sun is out, creating a high-fashion, editorial look that is very unique.   
• Poggio Covili Viewpoint: This is a long row of cypress trees in a perfectly straight line. It is best at dawn, but we have found ways to shoot it at sunset to get a very dramatic, backlit effect.   
• The “Gladiator” Fields: Just below Pienza, you can walk through the exact fields where the final scene of the movie Gladiator was filmed. At sunset, the golden light here is nothing short of spiritual.   

How We Tell Your Story

At the end of the day, your wedding is a human experience, not a photoshoot. I am there to capture the real moments—the tremble in a hand, the silent brush of a mother’s hair, the clinking of glasses, and the barefoot dancing on old stone tiles.
