Tuscany isn’t just a place on a map; it’s a state of mind. When I think about my work as a storyteller, I realize that for many of you coming from the United States, this region represents a dream of authenticity, connection, and timeless beauty. I’m Emiliano Russo, and I’ve spent years navigating the golden hills and ancient stone walls of this land to help couples capture their own unique “Italian Experience.” In this guide, I want to share my perspective on how to plan a perfect rustic chic celebration that feels modern, personal, and deeply rooted in the Tuscan soul.

The Evolution of Rustic Chic: From Burlap to “Refined Naturale”

There was a time, maybe ten years ago, when “rustic” meant hay bales and burlap. But the world has moved on, and so has Tuscany. What we are looking for now is what I like to call “Refined Naturale.” It’s about leaning into the organic beauty of a 17th-century villa or a working vineyard without trying to cover up its history.

Many of the blogs you might read in the US focus on heavy decorations, but the real magic of a wedding in Tuscany lies in its “perfect imperfection.” I love when a venue has a bit of “crustiness”—that delightful, run-down charm where you can feel the centuries of stories held within the stones. For 2025 and 2026, the trend is moving away from sterile minimalism toward something more tactile and layered. We’re seeing a return to stone textures, curved lines, and a palette that feels like it grew right out of the soil.

My role as your guide is to manage what I call “Visual Logistics.” This is my way of looking at your day through a lens of both art and reality. I’m not just there to take a picture; I’m there to understand the movement of the sun, the way the wind hits the cypress trees, and how to navigate the “Invisible Rules” of Italy—like drone laws and Restricted Traffic Zones (ZTL)—so that your day feels effortless.

A Tuscany Italy wedding one-of-a-kind experience

Why is a Tuscany Wedding a special experience? First of all, because Tuscany has a lot to offer: beach, hills, sea, mountains, fabulous cities, culture, ancient atmosphere, delicious food, elegance. When I have been hired to be a Wedding Photographer Tuscany, I’ve had the opportunity to appreciate all the special features of a Tuscan-Style Wedding.

Finding the Soul of Your Venue

The location you choose is the heartbeat of your story. Every corner of this region has a different personality, and finding the one that speaks to you is the first step in creating a visual legacy.

Villa Catignano and the Charm of Siena

If you want a venue that feels like a noble estate but still maintains an intimate, farmhouse vibe, Villa Catignano is hard to beat. Located near Castelnuovo Berardenga, this 17th-century complex is a maze of history. I particularly love the Lemon Garden for ceremonies. Picture yourself walking down a long aisle lined with lemon trees in terracotta vases, passing ancient statues as you head toward the altar. The dinner usually takes place in the courtyard, tucked between ancient stone buildings under the stars. It’s the kind of setting that makes every photo feel like an editorial spread.

Borgo Stomennano: The Lusso of Time

Just a few minutes from the medieval walls of Monteriggioni lies Borgo Stomennano. This is a national treasure that has been in the same family for over 250 years. It offers that “faded elegance” that is so difficult to replicate—frescoed ceilings, antique furnishings, and an air of quiet luxury. The estate can sleep up to 38 guests, making it perfect for a wedding weekend where everyone stays together. Sipping local wine on the terrace while watching the sun dip behind Monteriggioni is an experience your guests will never forget.

The Hidden Gems of Val d’Elsa

For couples who want something a bit more off the beaten path, the Val d’Elsa offers a bridge between the grandeur of Florence and the history of Siena. Places like Castello di Monteriggioni or Borgo San Luigi provide an authentic village experience. This is where my “Visual Logistics” approach really shines, as we use the cobbled streets and hidden courtyards to create portraits that feel cinematic and deeply personal.

The Wild Beauty of Maremma

If you’re looking for something more rugged and untamed, the Maremma region is the answer. Venues like Castello di Vicarello offer panoramic views that stretch toward the sea, surrounded by organic vineyards and olive groves. It’s ideal for intimate weddings where the focus is on “farm-to-table” quality and a slower pace of life.

The 3-Day Journey: Designing an Immersive Guest Experience

For most of my American couples, the wedding isn’t just a single day; it’s a journey for their family and friends. Spreading the celebration over three days allows everyone to relax and truly connect with the culture.

  • Day 1: The Welcome Pizza Party There is no better way to break the ice than with a wood-fired pizza oven and a few bottles of Chianti. It’s casual, joyful, and lets people settle in after their flight. From a photographer’s perspective, this is a golden opportunity to capture those first hugs and candid moments of excitement without the pressure of a formal schedule.
  • Day 2: The Big Day I always suggest a calm morning. While the girls have breakfast and start hair and makeup in the villa, the guys often spend time by the pool. I recommend scheduling the ceremony for the late afternoon when the light becomes soft and golden. Following the “I do,” guests move to the garden for an aperitivo, followed by a long-table dinner “al fresco.”
  • Day 3: The Farewell Brunch A relaxed morning by the pool with local pastries, fresh fruit, and endless espresso is the perfect way to wrap up the bubble of the weekend. It’s a time for final goodbyes and sharing memories from the night before before everyone begins their journey home.

For those looking for an even more intimate connection, an Elopement in Italy offers a chance to bypass the large crowds and focus entirely on the two of you in one of these breathtaking settings.

Flavors of Tuscany: The Culinary Heart of the Wedding

In Italy, food is our language of love. For a rustic chic wedding, your menu should reflect the bounty of the land.

One of the most iconic dishes you can offer is “Pici Cacio e Pepe.” These are hand-rolled, thick spaghetti typical of the Siena area, tossed with sharp pecorino cheese and black pepper. It’s simple, rustic, and incredibly satisfying. For the main course, nothing says Tuscany like a “Bistecca alla Fiorentina” paired with a bold Chianti Classico Riserva.

And then there is the cake. I always recommend a “live” Millefoglie. Watching the chefs assemble the layers of crisp pastry, chantilly cream, and fresh berries right in front of your guests is a piece of theatre that everyone loves.

Beyond the “I Do”: Memorable Guest Activities

To make your wedding truly stand out, I encourage you to offer your guests activities that let them live like locals for a few days.

  • Hot Air Ballooning: Seeing the sun rise over the vineyards of San Casciano from a wicker basket is a “bucket-list” experience that will leave your guests speechless.
  • Truffle Hunting: Join a local hunter and their dog for an adventure in the woods, followed by a lunch where you can taste what you’ve found.
  • Vespa or Vintage Fiat 500 Tours: There is nothing more iconic than riding through the rolling hills with the wind in your hair.

Understanding the Logistics and Avoiding Hidden Pitfalls

Planning a wedding from across the ocean can be complex, which is why I always suggest working with a local professional. A trusted wedding planner in Tuscany is your best ally in navigating the paperwork and managing your budget.

One thing to keep in mind is that the initial quote you receive from a venue might not include everything. You need to account for things like:

  • SIAE Tax: A mandatory fee for music rights in Italy.
  • VAT: Which can be 10% on food and 22% on services.
  • Event Fees: Some villas charge an extra fee just for hosting the wedding on top of the room rentals.

Booking during the “shoulder seasons” like May or October is a great way to save money while still enjoying beautiful weather and that incredible Tuscan light.

Making it Legal: The Paperwork for US Citizens

To have a legally binding civil wedding in Italy, you’ll need to prepare several documents, including your US Passport, birth certificates, and the “Atto Notorio”—a declaration stating there are no legal obstacles to your marriage. You’ll also need a “Nulla Osta” from the US Consulate in Italy.

Many of my couples find it easier to do the “paperwork” wedding in a quick ceremony back home and then have a beautiful symbolic ceremony in Tuscany. This gives you total freedom to choose any location—like a secret olive grove or a terrace with a view—and personalize your vows exactly how you want them.

Aesthetic Trends for 2026

If you’re planning for the coming seasons, we’re seeing a shift toward deeper, more soulful colors. While pastels will always have a place, “Mocha Mousse”—a rich, chocolatey brown—is becoming the “it” color for weddings. It’s earthy, sophisticated, and pairs beautifully with the warm terracotta of the region.

My Approach as a Photographer: “Active Tranquility”

My goal as your wedding photographer in Tuscany is to capture the truth of your connection. I don’t believe in stiff, frozen poses. Instead, I use a method I call “Active Tranquility.”

I might ask you to whisper a secret or walk slowly toward the light. These small prompts help kill the awkwardness and let your natural emotions emerge. My editing style is bright, airy, and true-to-life. I want the greens of the vineyards and the warmth of the stones to look exactly as they did in the moment. I want you to look back at these photos in twenty years and feel the sun on your skin again.

Choosing to get married in Tuscany is a bold and romantic decision. It requires effort and a team of people who care about your story as much as you do. My job is to be more than just a vendor; I am your navigator, ensuring that every glance, every tear, and every laugh is preserved with the elegance it deserves.

If you can hear the wind in the cypress trees and taste the Chianti on your tongue, then Tuscany is calling you. And I’ll be there, ready to tell your story.

Designing Your Rustic Chic Wedding Aesthetic

Create table settings with handwoven linen runners, vintage brass candle holders, and centerpieces that include locally grown wildflowers and olive branches.

Texture plays a crucial role in creating that perfect rustic and stylish vibe. Mix natural materials like rough-hewn wood delicate lace, & smooth ceramic. Consider incorporating elements such as:

  • Wooden farm tables with mismatched vintage chairs
  • Handmade ceramic plates
  • Linen napkins with raw, slightly frayed edges
  • Copper goblets & brass accents
  • Handcrafted ceramic name cards The beauty of a rustic & stylish event lies in its imperfect perfection.

It’s not about being polished, but about feeling genuine.

Whether it’s using family heirlooms as decor or incorporating local Tuscan craftsmanship, let your wedding design be a reflection of your journey together.

Tuscan Cuisine in your destination wedding photo shoot

Let me take you on a food journey to enhance your Tuscan wedding experience. Food is more than just something to eat. It is an art form, a celebration of tradition, and a way to express love. I have photographed many nuptials in this food paradise, and I can confidently say that the local food experiences are as unforgettable as the ceremonies themselves.

Imagine your guests enjoying homemade pici all’aglione with wild boar meat sauce. They will sip on crisp Chianti Classico wine while surrounded by the golden hills of the countryside.

Tuscan cuisine is about simplicity, quality ingredients, and old recipes that tell stories of family & tradition. A local wedding isn’t complete without embracing its incredible food culture. Local catering options can turn your event feast into an unforgettable food adventure. Consider these classic Tuscan food experiences:

  • Appetizer stations featuring local pecorino cheeses, prosciutto di Parma, and sun-dried tomatoes
  • Live cooking stations where chefs prepare traditional dishes like ribollita or panzanella
  • Wine pairings from local grape farm in the Chianti region
  • Dessert tables showcasing classic treats like cantucci (almond biscuits) and vin santo

Work with local caterers who get ingredients directly from nearby farms and wine estate. Local producers ensure the most authentic & fresh dining experience possible.

Wedding Photography and Preservation of Memories

Just the other day, I had the pleasure of photographing a lovely couple at a winery in the heart of the Region. The scenery was nothing short of breathtaking, with the sun dipping low in the sky, painting everything in hues of gold. That golden hour always creates a warm glow. I stood there with my camera, capturing the couple as they shared their first dance surrounded by family and friends. Every click of the shutter captured a profound emotion that filled the air.

I find that understanding light is crucial. The landscape offers a natural beauty that enhances every photo. I often remind couples to embrace these stunning settings. The soft beams of light filtering through the trees and illuminating their faces creates a sort of magic that transforms every image into a piece of art.

While capturing those intimate moments, I focus on the emotions unfolding naturally. Marriages are filled with joy, laughter, and occasionally a few tears, and each expression deserves to be immortalized. During that vineyard ceremony, I noticed the groom’s eyes light up as he watched his bride walk down the aisle. That particular snap became one of my favorites, a true reflection of their love on that day.

Years from now, those photos will serve as a time capsule, transporting them back to that enchanting day. Each moment captured, whether it’s the couple’s first kiss or the dance shared with grandparents, weaves together a narrative that will resonate for a lifetime.

Every ceremony is a new opportunity to create something truly special, and I am honored to preserve those memories.

I always approach taking bridal pictures with the mindset of telling a story. It’s not about perfectly posed shots, but about capturing the real, unplanned moments.

With careful planning and an open heart you’ll create memories that will last forever.
