I will never forget a sweltering afternoon in late July a few years ago. I was photographing a breathtaking couple who had flown all the way from New York to celebrate their elopement. The bride was wearing a masterpiece of a couture gown with a sweeping train, paired with towering Jimmy Choo stilettos. In her mind, she envisioned effortlessly gliding through the charming alleys of Positano, holding her husband’s hand as locals cheered.
The reality hit us about five minutes after leaving their hotel room.
Positano has virtually no flat ground. It is a vertical masterpiece, a cliffside village where the streets are too narrow for cars and the primary mode of transportation is your own two feet. After navigating just a fraction of the hundreds of steep, uneven cobblestone steps in the midday heat, the bride was exhausted, her heels were caught in the stone, and the joy of the moment was quickly fading into frustration.
I looked at them, smiled, and said, “Time to pivot.” We ditched the heels, I called a trusted local captain, and within twenty minutes, we were on a vintage wooden boat, far from the crowds, with the cool Mediterranean breeze saving the day.
If you are planning a destination wedding from the US, the sheer beauty of the Amalfi Coast can easily overshadow the practical realities of the terrain. I often joke with my couples about the “Staircase Tax”: the hidden logistical effort required to move you, your guests, and your vendors through this vertical paradise. But here is the truth: when you know how to master the logistics, Positano goes from being a beautiful challenge to an effortless dream.
As a local wedding photographer who has navigated every hidden alleyway, here are my golden rules for conquering the geography of Positano.
Rule 1: Respect the “Staircase Tax” (And Pack Backup Shoes)
When you look at photos of pastel houses cascading down to the sea, remember that someone had to carry the chairs, the flowers, and the champagne up those very same steps. This is the Staircase Tax.
For you, as the bride, this means rethinking your footwear. I completely understand the desire to wear designer heels on your wedding day. You should absolutely wear them for your ceremony, your first dance, and your seated portraits. But for moving between locations? It is a recipe for disaster.
I always beg my brides to bring a pair of chic, comfortable flats, elegant bridal sandals, or even stylish white sneakers. When we transition from your hotel down to the beach or up to a hidden terrace, you switch into your flats. Not only does this save your feet, but it keeps you relaxed. The camera captures tension instantly; if you are in pain or worried about tripping on cobblestones, it will show in your eyes. Comfort equals confidence, and confidence is the secret to breathtaking, editorial photography.
Rule 2: Choose Your Venue Based on Accessibility
Not all luxury venues in Positano are created equal when it comes to logistics. The venue you choose dictates the entire flow of your day. Let’s look at two of my absolute favorite, yet logistically opposite, locations.
The Effortless Elegance of Hotel Marincanto If you want jaw-dropping views without the grueling hike, Hotel Marincanto is a rare gem. Unlike many cliffside locations, it is relatively easy to reach by car and is located right in the center of town. You can literally step out of a luxury transfer vehicle and walk straight into the venue. It features an incredible panoramic terrace suspended between the sky and the sea, which is perfect for an intimate ceremony. Because it is so accessible, your older guests won’t struggle, and we can easily transition down their private staircases for portraits without breaking a sweat.
The Secluded Luxury of Villa Magia On the other hand, if ultimate privacy is your ultimate goal, Villa Magia is a true boutique oasis. It is situated at one of the highest points in the village. Getting there requires navigating a fair amount of steps, which means you absolutely must hire local porters to transport your luggage, your dress, and your decor. Is the extra effort worth it? Absolutely. Because of its elevation, you escape the noise of the tourists below. You get a massive arched balcony, a private pool, and an inner courtyard that offers perfect, soft light for timeless portraits.
Rule 3: Ditch the Main Beach for Secret First Look Spots
Every couple comes to me with a screenshot of the exact same photo: a kiss on the Spiaggia Grande (the main beach) with the colorful town rising perfectly in the background.
I love that photo, and I know exactly how to shoot it. But here is the insider secret: if you want that photo without hundreds of sunbathers in neon swimsuits staring at you, we have to shoot before 8:00 AM.
If an early wake-up call doesn’t fit your timeline, we don’t force it. Instead, I take my couples to secret viewpoints that tourists simply cannot find. For example, there is a tiny, hidden public terrace high above the town on Via dei Gladioli. It is a quiet residential street that offers a breathtaking, bird’s-eye view of the Mediterranean, completely free from the crowds.
Another of my favorite tricks is to escape to the nearby town of Praiano. Just a short drive away, the square of the Church of San Gennaro offers an epic view looking back toward Positano, bathed in the most spectacular sunset light on the coast, and it is beautifully empty.
Rule 4: Embrace the Water
The ultimate logistical hack in Positano is to stop fighting the stairs and simply leave the land.
If you are planning an elopement or a small wedding, booking a private vintage wooden boat (a classic Gozzo) isn’t just a fun activity to add to your itinerary; it is a tactical photography decision. Moving along the coastline gives us access to compositions that are physically impossible from the shore.
Imagine this: instead of navigating packed streets in your wedding attire, you are lounging on the sun deck of a boat, Champagne in hand, as the wind catches your veil. The sheer scale of the vertical cliffs rising from the water creates a cinematic, high-fashion backdrop. It is luxurious, it is deeply private, and most importantly, it allows you to truly breathe and be present with each other.
The True Luxury of Peace of Mind
Planning a wedding in a foreign country, especially one with a landscape as stubborn and dramatic as the Amalfi Coast, requires a team that knows the terrain blindly. You shouldn’t have to worry about where the sun will be at 6:00 PM, how to get your floral arch up a cliffside, or how to avoid the summer crowds.
If you choose the right professionals, from a brilliant local wedding planner to a photographer who values your experience just as much as the final image, the “Staircase Tax” simply becomes part of the beautiful adventure.
