START PLANNING YOUR WEDDING IN AMALFI COAST

Traci and Michael, a couple from Florida, came to inhabit a dream in Italy, suspended high above the vertical drama of the Amalfi Coast.

When couples ask me about the perfect venue for an intimate, “just us” experience, I often find myself guiding them toward the idea of a private sanctuary. You can find more about why this specific venue captures my imagination on my dedicated page for weddings in Villa Magia

Traci and Michael’s choice to elope here was not accidental. They wanted to strip away the noise. No guests, no bridal party, no rigid timeline dictated by a catering hall. Just two people, a historic watchtower, and the vast, blue indifference of the Tyrrhenian Sea. As a photographer, this is the kind of canvas I live for. It allows me to stop being a “vendor” and start being a storyteller, capturing the raw, unscripted flow of two lives merging into one.

The Art of Getting Ready… Together

We broke the first rule of traditional weddings right at the start: there was no separation. Traci and Michael decided to get ready together in their suite at Villa Magia. In the world of high-pressure weddings, the “First Look” is often staged for drama—the tap on the shoulder, the gasp, the tears. But there is a quieter, more profound intimacy in helping each other dress.

I watched as Michael adjusted his tie in the mirror while Traci moved through the room, the light catching the lace of her gown. There was no anxiety, only a comfortable silence filled with anticipation. The suite itself played a huge role in this atmosphere. Villa Magia isn’t a standard hotel; it was born in the 18th century as a watchtower to guard against Saracen pirates. The walls are thick, the history is palpable, and the architecture is designed to frame the sea.

The light in the suite was extraordinary. We were working with huge, arched glass doors that opened onto a private terrace. This architectural feature acted as a giant softbox, flooding the room with a diffused, flattering glow that wrapped around them. I took advantage of this to shoot some portraits right there, before we even stepped outside. They didn’t want the “reveal”; they wanted the “presence.” Seeing them standing together against the backdrop of those arched windows, with the coast stretching out to infinity behind them, established the visual language for the rest of the day: elegant, effortless, and deeply connected to the landscape.

A Ceremony Wrapped in Green

When it was time for the vows, we didn’t have to go far. We simply moved down to the terrace directly below their suite. This is one of the logistical masterstrokes of Villa Magia—the multi-level terracing allows for distinct “scenes” without the need for travel.

This particular terrace is a hidden gem. It overlooks Positano laterally, giving you that iconic view of the pastel houses cascading down the cliff, but it’s framed by lush, vibrant greenery. It feels like a secret garden suspended in the sky.

Waiting for us was Giovanna d’Amato. If you have ever attended a ceremony officiated by Giovanna, you know she doesn’t just read a script. She weaves a narrative. For Traci and Michael, she created a symbolic ceremony that felt incredibly intimate. There is a specific cadence to her voice that grounds you, making the rest of the world fade away. It was a sweet, intense moment. I remember looking through my viewfinder and seeing Traci’s eyes well up, not from stress, but from the sheer weight of the words being spoken.

My lens are emoptional like me. My goal is to enhance slices of personality inside amazing views. In some way this reflects part of who I am and my life story.

POSITANO STORIES

The wind was gentle, carrying the scent of jasmine and salt. Because we were high up, the noise of the town—the ferries, the tourists, the buses—was reduced to a distant hum, a soundtrack rather than a disturbance. This is why I always emphasize the importance of location selection. In a place as busy as Positano , finding silence is the ultimate luxury.

The Confidence of Minimalism

After the ceremony, we took some time to explore the grounds. The couple had made a bold aesthetic choice that I absolutely loved: they refused to have a floral arch.

In the wedding industry, we are often conditioned to think “more is more.” More flowers, more structures, more decor. But Traci and Michael understood something fundamental about the Amalfi Coast. When you are standing on a terrace at Villa Magia, with the entire glorious architecture of Positano behind you and the sea stretching to the horizon, a floral arch can actually become a cage. It blocks the view it’s meant to celebrate.

By saying “no” to the arch, they said “yes” to the view. They allowed the environment to be their decoration. We moved to the Luna Terrace for more photos, and the cleanliness of the composition was striking. It was just them and the view.

This minimalism allowed me to play with scale, showing them as small figures against the majesty of the mountains, or moving in close to capture the texture of their skin against the ancient stone, without visual clutter distracting the eye.

We went back into the suite for a few more portraits because the light had shifted. The sun was beginning its descent, casting long, dramatic shadows through those arched windows. The suite is so spacious that we could treat it like a studio. The glass reflected the sea, creating layers of blue upon blue. It was a moment of calm before the adventure of the descent.

Chasing the Light: The Boat Excursion

As any wedding photographer in Positano will tell you, light is our dictator. We answer to the sun. I knew that to get the shots Traci and Michael wanted, we had to time our movement to the harbor with military precision. We needed to catch the “Golden Hour” from the water.

Navigating Positano is a logistical puzzle. It is a vertical city, a labyrinth of stairs. But this is where experience counts. We didn’t rush. We turned the walk down to the beach into a part of the shoot, stopping in the shaded alleyways where the light was soft and bounced beautifully off the peach and terracotta walls.

When we boarded the boat, the timing was perfect. The sun was just starting to kiss the tops of the mountains.

The light on the water that afternoon was, frankly, fantastic. There is a specific quality to the light in Positano when the sun is low; it turns the spray from the boat into gold dust. We positioned the boat so that the town was in the background, backlit by the sun. This created a halo effect around the couple, separating them from the background while still keeping the iconic skyline visible.

Traci and Michael were in their element. You could see the Florida in them—they were comfortable on the water, relaxed, wind in their hair. I directed them to ignore me and just watch the sunset. The result was a series of images that feel completely unposed. The backlight caught the movement of Traci’s dress and the laughter between them. It was pure joy. We stayed out there as the sky transitioned from gold to a bruised purple, watching the lights of the town flicker on one by one.

The Magic of the Moon

By the time we returned to land and made our way back up to Villa Magia, the atmosphere had shifted completely. The sun was gone, replaced by a stunning full moon.

Night photography is a different beast. It requires patience and a steady hand. Many photographers pack up when the sun goes down, but I believe the blue hour and the night offer a romance that daylight simply cannot match.

We went back to the terrace. The moon was high, casting a silver path across the black water. It was surreal. I used the ambient light of the moon mixed with some subtle off-camera flash to illuminate them without killing the mood. The result was moody, cinematic, and incredibly romantic. It felt like a scene from an old Italian film.

They ended the evening sitting at a small table on the terrace, just the two of them, for the cake cutting. It was the perfect bookend to the day. They started together in the suite, and they ended together under the moon, with the glittering lights of Positano below them acting as their audience.

The Strategic Value of Intimacy

Writing this, I keep coming back to how “easy” the day felt, but I know that “easy” is often the result of careful planning. An elopement like this works because every element is curated.

Traci and Michael’s day highlighted the importance of a team that understands the rhythm of the location. As any wedding planner in Positano or even just as a photographer guiding the day, the goal is to shield the couple from the logistics.

We knew exactly when the ferry crowds would clog the marina, so we avoided it. We knew exactly when the light would hit the Luna Terrace, so we were there waiting for it.

We also knew that Villa Magia is unique because of its privacy. In a town that is often overrun with tourists, having a sanctuary where you can hear the wind in the trees is priceless. The staff at the villa operates with a “residential” mindset; they aren’t just checking you in, they are welcoming you home. This allowed Traci and Michael to feel completely at ease, which always translates into better photos.

Why Less was So Much More

I love big weddings. I love the chaos and the dance floors. But there is something about what Traci and Michael did that sticks with me. By stripping away the excess—the arch, the guests, the “first look” theatrics—they distilled the wedding down to its purest essence.

They reminded me that the beauty of an elopement isn’t just in the location, but in the freedom it gives you. The freedom to wake up slowly. The freedom to wear comfortable shoes for the walk down the hill because no one is judging you. The freedom to sit on a boat and watch the sunset without worrying if the appetizers are being served on time.

Their photos tell a story of a day that was entirely theirs. From the soft, diffused morning light in the suite to the sharp, golden backlight on the boat, and finally the cool, silver wash of the moonlight—it was a visual journey through the emotions of the day.

For anyone considering an elopement in Positano, let this be your permission slip to do it your way. You don’t need the flower arch. You don’t need the audience. Sometimes, all you need is a watchtower, a full moon, and the person you love.
