START PLANNING YOUR WEDDING IN AMALFI COAST

Embark on the jouI remember the first time I spoke with Courtney and Jason. They were calling from Florida, a place known for its sunshine and endless beaches, yet they were searching for something different. They wanted the ancient stone, the dramatic cliffs, and a sense of history that only the Amalfi Coast can offer. They didn’t want a performance; they wanted a memory.

When couples come to me, they often ask about the “perfect” wedding. I tell them that perfection isn’t about control; it’s about flow. It’s about letting the day breathe. Courtney and Jason understood this intuitively. Their decision to have a Hotel Marincanto wedding was the first step in a journey that would redefine what an elopement could be. The Marincanto is not just a hotel; it is a guardian of Positano’s past, suspended between the cerulean sky and the sapphire sea, offering a sanctuary of privacy in one of the most visited towns on Earth.

This story is not just about a ceremony. It is about a journey—from the intimate quiet of a hotel suite to the hidden alleys of Via Pasitea, through the exclusive gardens of Villa Magia, and finally across the waves to the rugged beauty of Marina di Praia. It is a story about light, about trust, and about two people who traveled thousands of miles to promise their lives to each other under the Italian sun.

The Morning Light at Hotel Marincanto

The day began with a calmness that felt almost sacred. Positano in the morning has a specific rhythm. The ferries haven’t yet started their relentless shuttling, and the light is soft, wrapping the pastel houses in a gentle, hazy embrace. Courtney and Jason had chosen to get ready individually within their suite at the Hotel Marincanto. This choice—to prepare separately—added a layer of traditional anticipation to their modern elopement.

I moved between them, treading softly on the cool ceramic tiles of the suite. The room itself was a masterpiece of coastal elegance, with vaulted ceilings that seemed to hold the breath of the ocean. Jason was adjusting his cufflinks, his movements precise and thoughtful. There is a gravity to the groom’s preparation that I love to capture—the quiet realization that life is about to change in the most beautiful way. He stood by the window, looking out at the expanse of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the water stretching all the way to the horizon like a sheet of hammered silver.

In the other room, Courtney was stepping into her dress. The fabric caught the light from the terrace doors, glowing with an ethereal luminescence. We didn’t need artificial lights; the sun of the Amalfi Coast is the best lighting assistant a photographer could ask for. It filled the room, highlighting the delicate lace of her gown and the genuine emotion in her eyes. She was calm, radiant, and ready. There was no chaos, no rushing bridesmaids or frantic timelines—just the quiet hum of anticipation.

The Marincanto is unique because it feels like a private home. Founded by the Vespoli family, it has hosted royalty and celebrities, yet it retains a warmth that makes you feel like the only guests in the world. As I photographed Courtney putting on her earrings, I thought about the history of this place, how many love stories these walls have witnessed. But today, the only story that mattered was theirs.

The First Look: A Moment Suspended in Time

We chose the private terrace of their suite for the “first look.” In my years as a Positano wedding photographer, I have learned that the setting of the first look sets the tone for the entire day. The terrace at the Marincanto offers a backdrop that is nothing short of theatrical. To the left, the cascade of colorful houses tumbles down to the beach; to the right, the open sea beckons.

I positioned Jason facing the sea, his back to the glass doors. The wind was gentle, carrying the scent of salt and jasmine. When Courtney stepped out, the sound of her dress rustling against the stone floor was the only sound in the world. I signaled to her to take her time. This isn’t a movie scene that needs to be rushed; it’s a real moment that needs to be felt.

She reached out and touched his shoulder. Jason turned, and the expression on his face was everything a photographer hopes for. It was a mix of joy, relief, and pure adoration. Tears welled up in their eyes as they took each other in. For a few minutes, I stopped shooting and just let them be. I retreated to the corner of the terrace, using a long lens to compress the distance, framing them against the iconic dome of Santa Maria Assunta in the distance. The colorful majolica tiles of the church dome echoed the vibrancy of their emotions.

They hugged, laughed, and wiped away each other’s tears. It was intimate and raw. In a town that can often feel crowded, they had carved out a private island of emotion high above the sea. This is the beauty of the Marincanto—it lifts you above the world, giving you perspective and privacy in equal measure.

The Ceremony: Vows Above the Sea

The symbolic ceremony took place right there on the terrace. We didn’t need an arch or elaborate floral arrangements; the view was the cathedral. The cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, rising dramatically from the water, provided a sense of permanence and grandeur that no man-made structure could compete with.

The officiant spoke about love as a journey, a metaphor that felt particularly poignant given the distance Courtney and Jason had traveled. As they exchanged their vows, the sun moved higher, casting a warm, golden glow over the terrace. I moved quietly around them, capturing the way the light caught the tears on Courtney’s cheek and the steadfast look in Jason’s eyes.

There is a specific challenge in shooting a ceremony at noon in Italy—the light can be harsh. But the Marincanto’s white terraces act as natural reflectors, bouncing the light and softening the shadows. The result was a series of images that felt airy, bright, and full of life. When they finally kissed, the wind picked up Courtney’s veil, creating a sculptural shape against the blue sky. It was a moment of pure serendipity, a gift from the elements.

After the ceremony, we popped a bottle of prosecco. The cork flew off the terrace, perhaps destined to land in the sea below as an offering to Poseidon. We spent some time taking portraits on the terrace, utilizing the infinity pool area and the bougainvillea-covered walkways. But I knew that the real adventure was just beginning. I had planned a route that would take us deep into the heart of Positano, revealing its hidden secrets.

The Descent: Via Pasitea and the Secret Alleys

One of the secrets to a successful wedding in Positano is managing the logistics of movement. Positano is a vertical city, a maze of stairs and steep roads. To make the experience enjoyable, you have to work with gravity, not against it.

Our driver met us at the hotel entrance, and instead of heading down to the beach where the crowds were thickest, we drove up. We went to the very top of Via Pasitea, the winding artery that snakes through the town. This was a deliberate choice. By starting at the top, we could walk down through the town, saving Courtney and Jason from the exertion of climbing hundreds of stairs in their wedding attire.

More than saving energy, this route allowed us to discover a side of Positano rarely seen by tourists. As we descended, I led them off the main road into the narrow pedestrian alleys, the vicoli. These paths form the town’s veins, ancient and quiet. Here, the walls are covered in crumbling stucco, painted in shades of peach and terracotta faded by centuries of sun.
We found a staircase tucked between two high walls, shaded by a canopy of vines. The light here was moody and dramatic, a stark contrast to the bright brilliance of the terrace. I asked Courtney and Jason to walk slowly, to hold hands, to look at each other rather than the camera. Without the distraction of hundreds of tourists with selfie sticks, they could relax. They laughed, stole kisses, and simply enjoyed the feeling of being husband and wife.

At one point, an elderly local woman leaned out of her window to shout “Auguri!” (Best wishes!). Courtney and Jason waved back, beaming. These are the interactions that make an elopement here so special. You become part of the fabric of the town, if only for a moment. We stopped at points where the alleyways opened up to reveal sudden, breathtaking views of the sea below, framed by pots of geraniums and drying laundry—the authentic, living Positano.

Villa Magia: A Style Temple

Our descent led us to Villa Magia. This venue is a jewel in Positano’s crown, and I am fortunate to have a relationship of deep trust and collaboration with the management here. Because of this bond, built over years of working together as an Amalfi Coast wedding planner and photographer, we were welcomed like family.

Villa Magia offers a different atmosphere than the Marincanto. It is lush, garden-centric, and incredibly chic. We were granted access to the villa’s most evocative corners, including the iconic Terrazza Luna. This terrace is famous for a reason. It offers a panoramic view that encompasses both the Spiaggia Grande and the quieter Fornillo beach, split by the rugged promontory of the Trasita tower.

The floor of the terrace, with its geometric tiles, provided a stylish, graphic element to the photos. I positioned Courtney and Jason against the railing, with the entire coast stretching out behind them. The sun was beginning its descent, and the light was turning softer, warmer. We moved through the gardens, where the scent of lemon blossoms was thick in the air. The contrast between the manicured elegance of Villa Magia and the rustic charm of the alleys we had just walked through gave their wedding album a rich diversity of textures and moods.

We took a moment here to just breathe. The staff at Villa Magia brought us glasses of water and offered their congratulations. It felt like an oasis, a calm pause in the middle of our journey. This exclusivity, this ability to step behind the gates of such a prestigious villa, elevated the experience from a simple photo walk to a luxury event.

The Voyage to Marina di Praia

But the sea was calling. We made our way down to the dock, where a private boat was waiting for us. There is something transformative about stepping onto a boat in the Amalfi Coast. The perspective shifts instantly. The towering cliffs, which feel oppressive from the land, become majestic sculptures when viewed from the water.

We cast off, the engine humming a low note as we motored away from Positano. The wind whipped through Courtney’s hair, and Jason held her close to steady her. These candid moments on the boat often end up being some of the couples’ favorites. They are unposed, full of movement and genuine happiness.

Our destination was Marina di Praia, a small hamlet a few kilometers down the coast in the town of Praiano. I love Marina di Praia for its rugged, dramatic beauty. It is essentially a fjord, a deep cut in the coastline where the mountains plunge straight into the sea. As we approached, the view was dominated by the Church of San Gennaro in Vettica Maggiore, sitting high on the cliff. Its dome, tiled in vibrant yellow and green majolica stripes, shimmered in the afternoon sun like a beacon. It is one of the most iconic architectural landmarks of the coast, and capturing it in the background of their boat portraits anchored their story firmly in the geography of the region.

The Green Arch and the Pirate’s Path

We docked at the small pebble beach of Marina di Praia. The vibe here is different—more fishing village, less resort. Right on the beach stands the Church of the Annunziata (Cappella dell’Annunziata). This small chapel is a hidden gem. It doesn’t have the grandeur of the cathedrals, but it has a humble, weathered soul.

The church features a beautiful portico with arches that frame the sea. The locals often call it the “green church” because of the way the emerald water of the cove reflects onto its white walls, and the moss that grows near the waterline. We shot around these arches, using the natural framing to draw the eye to the couple. The stone here is rough, worn smooth by centuries of salt spray. It provided a textural contrast to the silk of Courtney’s dress and the sharp tailoring of Jason’s suit.

From the church, we began the walk along the famous coastal path that leads to the “Il Pirata” beach club. This path is a marvel of engineering, carved directly into the sheer limestone cliff face. It hangs suspended over the water, winding its way around the promontory.

I ran ahead, looking back to capture Courtney and Jason walking along this ribbon of stone. The cliffs towered above them, and the sea crashed below. It felt wild and elemental. This location captures the adventurous spirit of an elopement—the feeling of being on the edge of the world with the person you love. We stopped at a curve in the path where the view opens up back towards the watchtower. The light here was “open shade”—soft, flattering, and even—protected by the high cliffs from the direct sun. It allowed me to capture intimate portraits where their skin tones looked creamy and perfect, without the harsh shadows of midday.

The Golden Hour: Returning to Positano

As the sun began to dip lower, approaching the ridge of the mountains, we boarded the boat for the return journey to Positano. This timing was calculated. The sunset on the Amalfi Coast is a fleeting, magical phenomenon. Because of the high mountains, the sun “sets” behind the cliffs before it actually dips below the horizon, creating a unique lighting condition.

As we sped back across the water, the sky turned a brilliant, burning gold. I asked the captain to slow down so we could capture the movement of the boat against the fiery sky. Courtney’s veil danced in the wind, catching the golden light. Jason looked at her with a look of utter contentment. The sea turned a deep, metallic blue, contrasting with the warm orange of the sky.

We arrived back in the bay of Positano just as the light was shifting from gold to violet. The town was beginning to light up, a galaxy of small, warm lights flickering on against the darkening hillside. This transition, known as the “Blue Hour,” is my favorite time to photograph. The mix of natural twilight and artificial city light creates a romantic, moody atmosphere that feels like a dream.

Blue Hour on the Beach

We landed on the beach, kicking off our shoes. The sand was cool, the day’s heat dissipating into the evening breeze. The beach, so crowded just hours before, was now emptying out. We had the shoreline almost to ourselves.

I positioned Courtney and Jason at the water’s edge, with the pyramid of Positano rising behind them. The lights of the town were glowing warmly, reflecting in the calm water. The sky was a deep, rich indigo. I used a wide aperture to let in all the available light, capturing the ambient glow of the town.

They stood there, holding each other, exhausted but exhilarated. They had journeyed from the quiet heights of the Marincanto, through the hidden veins of the town, across the sea to the wild cliffs of Praiano, and back again. They had experienced the Amalfi Coast in all its moods—bright and joyful, hidden and quiet, wild and rugged, and finally, peaceful and romantic.

As I took the final shot, I lowered my camera and just watched them for a moment. They were whispering to each other, oblivious to me, oblivious to the few people walking their dogs on the beach. They were in their own world. And that, ultimately, is the goal of my work. Not just to take photos, but to create a space where two people can feel the magnitude of their love, amplified by the breathtaking beauty of Italy.

Courtney and Jason’s elopement was a perfect example of how trust, planning, and a sense of adventure can come together to create magic. It was an honor to be their guide, their witness, and their storyteller.

A Deeper Look: The Elements of a Perfect Positano Elopement

To understand why Courtney and Jason’s day flowed so effortlessly, it is worth looking closer at the elements that composed it. An elopement is like a symphony; the locations are the instruments, but the timing and logistics are the conductor.

The Venue: Why Hotel Marincanto?

The choice of venue is the anchor of the elopement. Hotel Marincanto offers a specific set of advantages that are crucial for photography and experience.

  • The History: The Marincanto is woven into the history of Positano. The Vespoli family, who founded it, have been custodians of hospitality here for generations. This authenticity resonates in the photos—the stone, the tiles, the very layout of the building speaks of a genuine Italian heritage, not a manufactured resort experience.
  • The Light: The hotel faces South-East/South, meaning it gets beautiful morning light but is also perfectly positioned to watch the sunset colors reflect off the town. The white architecture acts as a giant reflector, filling in shadows and creating flattering portraits.
  • The Privacy: In a town of 4,000 residents that hosts thousands of tourists daily, privacy is the ultimate luxury. The terraces of the Marincanto are strictly private. This allowed Courtney and Jason to have their First Look and Ceremony without onlookers, a critical factor for emotional vulnerability.

MEMORABLE WEDDINGS WITH A POSITANO WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

What will certainly remain of your wedding in Positano is a picture of it, yet in order to make this memory unforgettable you need of the professionists. And you will definitely find them in Positano and the surrounding villas.

The Logic of the Route: Via Pasitea

Navigating Positano requires local knowledge. The decision to drive to the top of Via Pasitea and walk down is a strategic masterstroke for several reasons:

  • Crowd Control: The lower parts of Positano (Via dei Mulini, the Piazza) are choke points for tourism. The upper alleys and the “hidden” stairs are often empty. By spending our walking time there, we ensured the couple felt relaxed and unobserved.
  • Comfort: Wedding attire is not designed for hiking uphill in the Mediterranean heat. Gravity is our friend.
  • Visual Narrative: The walk down allows for a narrative progression in the photos. We start high, with sweeping vistas of the sea, and descend into the intimate, narrow streets. This provides a diverse range of backgrounds within a single hour of shooting.

The Role of Relationships: Villa Magia

In destination weddings, relationships are everything. My studio’s connection with Villa Magia allowed us to access a location that would otherwise be off-limits or require a separate booking.

Terrazza Luna: This spot is unique because of its height and orientation. It offers a “dual view” of the coast that is rare. The vegetation at Villa Magia is also distinct—lush, green, and garden-like, contrasting with the stone and sea dominance of the rest of the day.

The Drama of Praiano: Marina di Praia

Why leave Positano? Because the Amalfi Coast is diverse.

  • The Path: The path to Il Pirata is a compositional gift. It provides a natural “leading line” that guides the viewer’s eye straight to the couple. The texture of the rock face on one side and the fluid ocean on the other creates a dynamic tension in the images.
  • Geology: Positano is vertical and pastel. Marina di Praia is horizontal, rocky, and raw. It sits in a gorge. The cliffs here loom overhead, creating a sense of scale that makes the couple look small in the majesty of nature.
  • Architecture: The Church of San Gennaro is a landmark visible from miles away. Including it in the boat shots gives the viewer a sense of “place.” The small Annunziata chapel offers a rustic, textural backdrop that contrasts with the polished elegance of the Marincanto.

The Mastery of Light

Photography is painting with light. The schedule was built around the sun.

  • Blue Hour (Beach): We arrived at the beach exactly when the ambient light balanced with the town lights, creating the signature “magical” look of Positano at dusk.
  • Midday (Ceremony): We used the open shade of the terrace and the reflective white walls to mitigate the high sun.
  • Afternoon (Alleys): The narrow streets of Positano provide natural shade, creating soft, directional light that is perfect for moody portraits.
  • Late Afternoon (Praiano): The high cliffs of the gorge blocked the direct sun, giving us soft, even light on the Pirate’s Path.
  • Sunset (Boat): We timed the boat ride to catch the golden rays hitting the water and the couple’s faces.

Courtney and Jason’s elopement was not just a series of events; it was a carefully curated experience designed to maximize beauty, comfort, and emotion. It is a testament to the fact that with the right planning and the right team, a wedding day can be an adventure that you will never forget.
