RAVELLO STORIES

Explore the romantic honeymoon of Stephanie & Mark at Palazzo Confalone. Discover the best photo spots in Ravello, from historic halls to the Villa Comunale gardens.

When Stephanie and Mark arrived from the United States for their honeymoon, they were looking for that suspension. They wanted to stop the clock on the happiest days of their lives. As a photographer, my job isn’t just to click a shutter. It is to read the air. When I met Stephanie and Mark, I felt immediately that they didn’t want the chaotic, “paparazzi-style” energy of the beach towns below. They wanted the aristocratic silence of the mountaintop. They chose Palazzo Confalone as their base, and it was the perfect decision.

This venue is not just a hotel; it is a “rough diamond,” a piece of living history that feels less like a commercial establishment and more like the private home of a noble friend who has invited you for the summer.

The Morning Light: A Private World

We began the session right there, within the walls of the Palazzo.

I often tell couples that the most beautiful photos come from a sense of belonging. Stephanie and Mark didn’t look like tourists visiting a monument; they looked like they belonged among these 12th-century stones. We started in the Hall, a space that is, frankly, a masterpiece of light and shadow. The architecture here is a gift to any photographer who knows how to use it. The ogival arches, with their subtle Moorish influence, create natural frames that draw the eye directly to the subject.

I asked Stephanie to stand near one of the ancient marble columns. These aren’t pristine, polished museum pieces; they are worn, textured, and full of character—spolia from ancient times that have seen empires rise and fall. When she leaned against it, the contrast was breathtaking: the softness of her honeymoon glow against the hardness of the centuries-old stone. Mark stood nearby, just watching her. I didn’t need to tell him to smile. The way he looked at her, framed by the vaulted ceiling of the Palazzo, said everything.

We moved to the inner rooms, specifically the Frescoed Hall. This room is a treasure chest. The ceiling is covered in a 17th-century fresco depicting a marine scene—peaks of copper green and deep blues that echo the sea outside. Shooting here requires a deep understanding of natural light. The light enters from the terrace doors, directional and moody. I positioned Stephanie and Mark in that transition zone where the light falls off into shadow. It created a “Rembrandt” effect on their faces, highlighting the intimacy of the moment. We weren’t rushing. We were just existing in that beautiful space, letting the history of the Confalone family wrap around their new history as a married couple.

The Architecture of Intimacy

One of the reasons I love shooting at Palazzo Confalone is its “mosaic” layout. It’s an unpredictable swarm of rooms, corridors, and terraces. It allows for a sense of discovery. We wandered through the hotel, finding small balconies that hung over the cliffside.

On the main terrace, the view opens up completely. You can see the entire coastline, the lemon groves cascading down the valley, and the endless blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea. But instead of focusing solely on the epic panorama, I focused on them within it. I captured the wind catching Stephanie’s hair, the way Mark held her hand as they looked out at the horizon. This is the beauty of this structure for a honeymoon shoot: it offers grandiosity, but it also offers privacy. We didn’t have to fight crowds. We had the “Garden Belvedere” to ourselves, bordered by those iconic octagonal columns that are so distinct to Ravello’s architecture.

Stepping Out: The Ravello Atmosphere

After exploring every corner of the hotel, we stepped out into the town.

Being a photographer in Ravello means knowing the rhythm of the streets. Ravello is a pedestrian sanctuary, which changes the entire vibe of a photo session. There is no traffic noise, no dodging Vespas. There is just the sound of our footsteps on the cobblestones and the distant church bells.

We walked through the area surrounding the hotel, the Via San Giovanni del Toro. This street is lined with historic palaces and luxury hotels, but it remains quiet. We used the textured walls of the old buildings as backdrops. I love the way the light hits the plaster in the late afternoon—it turns the walls into a warm, golden reflector that makes skin tones look creamy and flawless.

Stephanie and Mark were so relaxed. The stress of the wedding planning was behind them. They were in Italy, they were married, and they were happy. My goal was to make the photoshoot feel like just another part of their romantic stroll. I used a long lens for many of these shots, standing back to let them talk and laugh naturally. I captured them walking away from me, hand in hand, disappearing into the shade of an alleyway. It felt cinematic, like the closing scene of a classic Italian film.

The Villa Comunale: Chasing the Golden Hour

As the sun began its descent, we made our way to the Villa Comunale (often referred to locally as the Giardini Principessa di Piemonte).

This is a crucial moment where logistical mastery comes into play. As a professional, I know exactly when the light hits the trees in this garden. I know when the tour groups usually leave for dinner, leaving the space empty and serene. We arrived right on time.

The Villa Comunale offers a different kind of beauty compared to the wilder cliffs. It is manicured, elegant, and geometric, with a central lawn and a railing that overlooks the coast towards Minori and Maiori. The light here during the “Golden Hour” is spectacular. Because Ravello is high up, we stay in the sun a bit longer than the towns below, but the light is softer, diffused by the altitude and the moisture rising from the sea.

I placed Stephanie and Mark at the edge of the garden, with the coastline stretching out behind them. The sky was turning a soft pastel pink. This is the “soft box” effect that photographers dream of. There were no harsh shadows under their eyes, no squinting. Just pure, soft, flattering light.

We played with the geometry of the garden paths, using the lines of the trees to lead the eye toward the couple. Mark spun Stephanie around on the grass, and for a moment, it felt like they were the only two people in Ravello. It wasn’t a posed dance; it was a spontaneous burst of joy.

The Art of Logistics: The Invisible Hand

While Stephanie and Mark were lost in the moment, my mind was constantly calculating. Planning a shoot in a medieval town requires a Ravello wedding mindset. It’s about knowing the closing times of the gardens (which change depending on the season). It’s about knowing which gate is open and which is locked. It’s about knowing how long it takes to walk from Palazzo Confalone to the gardens in heels, and suggesting a stop for water or a gelato if the energy dips.

We mastered the timeline so they didn’t have to. We timed our arrival at the specific viewpoints to coincide with the best light, but also to avoid the moments when the local bus drops off day-trippers. This “invisible” logistical work is what allows the couple to feel relaxed. They don’t see the planning; they just experience the seamless flow of the evening.

A Connection Beyond the Lens

By the end of the shoot, I felt a deep connection with Stephanie and Mark. We had shared a beautiful afternoon. We had talked about their life in the US, their dreams for their future, and their love for Italy.

There is a vulnerability in allowing someone to photograph your honeymoon. It is a private time. But Stephanie and Mark trusted me completely. They let down their guard. They allowed me to see the quiet, tender moments—the way Mark brushes the hair from Stephanie’s face, the way she leans into him for support.

When I look at the photos now, I don’t just see a beautiful couple in a beautiful location. I see the emotion. I see the excitement of a new journey beginning. Palazzo Confalone was the perfect vessel for this emotion—historic, solid, and enduring, just like the marriage they are building.

The Legacy of a Ravello Honeymoon

For couples like Stephanie and Mark, coming to Ravello isn’t just a trip; it’s a pilgrimage to beauty. And having these photos is a way to seal that pilgrimage in time. Years from now, when life gets busy and noisy, they can look back at these images. They will see the light of the Amalfi Coast. They will see the frescoes of the Palazzo. But mostly, they will see themselves, young and in love, suspended in the silence of Ravello.
If you are thinking about a honeymoon session here, remember that the location is a character in your story. Choose a place with soul, like Palazzo Confalone. And choose to move slowly. Let the town reveal itself to you. Let the light guide you. That is how we create magic.
