Elopement in Amalfi and Ravello
AMAZINGNESS AND BEAUTY IN AMALFI
Discover the enchantment of an elopement in Amalfi and Ravello through the fairy-tale story of a couple from Birmingham, set against the backdrop of Villa delle Delizie and a pink-hued sunset.

You will have the privilege, looking at your Wedding pictures, to remember Ravello as a real place, which will always stay in your heart for your entire life.
For Christian and Val, this journey began far from the lemon-scented cliffs of Italy, in the industrial and vibrant soul of Birmingham, UK. They didn’t want a performance; they wanted a memory that felt like a secret shared with the wind. When they first reached out to me, I could sense that their hearts were already wandering through the ancient stone alleys of the Mediterranean. They were looking for an experience that was 100% human, a day where the light dictated the pace and the history of the land served as their only witness.
The decision to choose an Amalfi Coast elopement is often born from a desire for intimacy over tradition. For a couple coming from the bustling Midlands, the silence of the coast in October is a revelation.
I remember our early conversations, where we talked about the contrast between the gray-toned elegance of the UK and the liquid gold light of the Italian autumn. They weren’t just looking for a photographer; they were looking for a guide who could navigate the “invisible” side of the coast, the places that don’t appear in every tourist guide and the hours when the shadows are softest.
Intimate ceremony at Villa delle Delizie
Our day began in a place that feels like a whisper. Villa delle Delizie is one of those rare gems that resists the digital age; it doesn’t have a flashy website, and even finding it on a map requires a bit of local knowledge.
Tucked away near the famous Hotel Santa Caterina, this luxury B&B is a masterpiece of the Liberty Style: what we Italians call Art Nouveau. It is a national monument, a treasure trove of 19th-century elegance that Christian and Val were lucky enough to find on Airbnb before it disappeared from the platform.
Walking into the villa is like stepping into an aristocratic dream from a hundred years ago. The ceilings soar to twenty feet, and the floors are covered in hand-painted majolica tiles that reflect the deep blues and greens of the sea. Val spent her morning in these rooms, and the atmosphere was truly fairy-tale.
I remember the way the light filtered through the tall windows, creating a soft glow that bounced off the antique furniture and the intricate patterns of the tiles. There is a weight to the history in a place like this, a sense of “old world” charm that makes the modern world feel very far away.
Val had decided to use the interiors for her portraits, and it was a masterclass in elegance. We played with the reflections in the tall mirrors, the heavy wooden doors, and the backlight that made her silhouette look like something out of a Renaissance painting. There was no rush, no frantic timeline. Just the sound of the sea air and the quiet anticipation of the ceremony. Christian, meanwhile, was preparing in his own corner of the villa, looking sharp and incredibly modern in a pine green suit. It was a bold choice that worked perfectly against the earthy tones of the villa’s stone walls and the vibrant greenery of the gardens.
The Aesthetic of Pine Green and Winged Veils
Christian’s choice of a pine green suit was inspired. In a world of navy and charcoal, the deep, hunter tones of his attire felt connected to the landscape of the coast. Green is a color of renewal and growth, and in the context of the Amalfi cliffs, it harmonized beautifully with the umbrella pines and the wild fennel that grows along the pathways. It gave him a presence that was both sophisticated and grounded, a perfect match for the “moody” and refined vibe of an October wedding.
But it was Val’s choice of accessory that truly stole the breath from the morning air. Instead of a traditional veil, she wore what I can only describe as bridal wings. These sheer fabric panels attached to her shoulders, creating a silhouette that looked like a split cape. When she moved, the fabric caught the breeze, opening up like the wings of a butterfly or a swan. It was a choice that felt both contemporary and ethereal, allowing her dress to remain fully visible while adding a layer of dramatic movement to every step she took.
I remember taking a few shots of her on the terrace overlooking Amalfi, where the wings caught the wind. She looked like she was about to take flight over the coastline. It’s these kinds of personal style choices that make my job so rewarding. As a wedding in Amalfi Coast
photographer, I’m always looking for ways to capture the “persona” of the couple, and the combination of that pine green and those translucent wings was a visual poem I’ll never forget.
Vows in the Garden with Carmela
The couple chose not to do a “first look.” Instead, they saved that electric moment for the ceremony itself. We moved into the villa’s private gardens, a secluded space where the only audience was the mountains and the sea. The setting was intentionally minimalist, a simple wooden table, a few pampas grasses that swayed in the wind, and a handful of flowers on the ground. When you have a backdrop as grand as the Amalfi Coast, you don’t need much to make it feel sacred.
To lead the ceremony, we had the wonderful Carmela Cesarano, or as she is known to many of us, Carmela The Celebrant. Carmela is a bridge between two worlds; her dual nationality means she speaks the language of Birmingham as fluently as she speaks the soul of Italy. She has this incredible ability to weave personal anecdotes and heartfelt emotions into a ceremony that feels chic and deeply grounded at the same time.
The exchange of vows was, without a doubt, the most moving part of the day. There is something about hearing two people speak their truths in such a quiet, private setting that makes the words feel heavier, more permanent. After the rings were exchanged and the first kiss was shared, they had a toast right there in the garden, surrounded by the floral setting. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated joy. There were no guests to entertain, no schedules to follow, just the two of them, a bottle of prosecco, and the realization that they were finally husband and wife.
Navigating the Rhythms of October
One of the reasons I love working with couples like Christian and Val is that they trust me to manage the logistics of the day. Being an Amalfi Coast wedding planner and photographer means knowing more than just how to use a camera; it means knowing the “invisible rhythms” of the coast. People often ask me why I suggest certain hours or certain seasons, and the answer is always about the light and the silence.
October is the “sweet spot” for an elopement. The summer heat has faded into a gentle warmth, and the sea is still warm from the months of sunshine. But more importantly, the crowds have vanished. We were able to move through the gardens and the nearby stone arches without having to dodge tourists or wait in lines. We did a series of portraits around the villa, utilizing the arched doorways and the iron-wrought glass doors that added a layer of architectural interest to the photos.
I often tell my couples that my role is to “engineer the silence.” By suggesting specific times and places, I can transform a busy tourist destination into a private sanctuary. We had arranged for a driver to take us up the winding roads to Ravello for the second half of our session, and the timing was planned to the minute. We wanted to arrive at Villa Rufolo just as the “pinkish” light of the autumn sunset began to paint the sky.
The Silent Splendor of Villa Rufolo
Ravello is often called the “Balcony of Silence,” and in October, it truly lives up to its name. We arrived at Villa Rufolo as the day was beginning to soften. This 13th-century villa is a place of incredible architectural depth, featuring Moorish cloisters and towers that feel like they belong in a fairy tale. Because it was almost autumn, the leaves were just beginning to turn yellow, adding a layer of golden warmth to the gardens.
We walked through the arches and the pathways, and for much of the time, we were the only ones there. This is the luxury of a well-timed elopement. I was able to capture photos of them wandering through the cloisters without a single tourist in the background. The silence was so profound that you could hear the distant sound of a piano from one of the town’s music schools, providing a spontaneous soundtrack to our walk.
As a photographer in Amalfi, I am obsessed with what I call the “Mountain Shadow.” Because the Lattari Mountains are so steep, the sun disappears behind the peaks long before it actually sets on the horizon. If you don’t know the exact minute this happens, you lose the best light of the day. But in October, the light doesn’t just disappear; it transforms. It takes on this delicate, pinkish hue that filters through the air, making everything look like a classical painting.
Capturing the Pinkish Glow of Ravello
We ended our session on one of the most iconic terraces of Villa Rufolo. The sky was a gradient of soft pinks and deep royal blues, and the umbrella pine tree stood in silhouette against the sea. Christian and Val stood at the edge of the terrace, looking out over the towns of Maiori and Minori sparkling far below. The atmosphere was incredibly emotional, a mix of fairy-tale romance and the quiet peace of a day well-spent.
I remember suggesting they just take a moment to breathe it all in. I stepped back and captured them from a distance, two figures suspended between the sky and the water. This is where my experience in managing “Visual Logistics” comes into play. I knew exactly when to move from the shaded cloisters to the open terraces to catch that fleeting, “pinkish” window of light. It’s not something you can find in a manual; it’s something you learn by living on these cliffs for years.

The rapport I had with Christian and Val was beautiful. They were so open, so willing to let the day unfold naturally. I shared an anecdote with them about my first time shooting in Ravello, how I had gotten lost in the same labyrinthine streets we were now walking. We laughed about the “hidden” nature of the coast and how lucky they were to have found Villa delle Delizie. It felt less like a professional appointment and more like a journey taken with friends.
Why an Elopement is the Ultimate Luxury
Many people think an elopement is about having “less,” but for Christian and Val, it was about having “more.” They had more time to talk, more time to feel, and more time to inhabit the beauty of their surroundings. By choosing to elope in Amalfi and Ravello, they turned their wedding into an experience that was entirely their own.
My job is to take all the logistical stress off their shoulders, managing the driver, knowing the opening and closing times of the villas, understanding the ZTL (restricted traffic zones), and most importantly, predicting the behavior of the sun. This allows the couple to simply “be.” When they look back at their photos, I don’t want them to remember being told how to pose; I want them to remember the scent of the lemon trees, the feel of the autumn breeze in Val’s wings, and the quiet weight of the vows they spoke in that secret garden.
As the last of the pink light faded and the stars began to twinkle over Ravello, we made our way back. The day had been a perfect arc of emotion, architecture, and light. It was a testament to the fact that when you follow the rhythms of the land and the heart, you create something that is truly timeless. Christian and Val returned to Birmingham with more than just a marriage certificate; they returned with a piece of the Amalfi Coast’s soul.
Technical Mastery and the Human Touch
In my work, I strive to balance the precision of a professional with the intuition of an artist. I know the “physics of light”, how the humidity in the air can create a haze or how the limestone walls reflect a warm glow onto the skin. But all the technical knowledge in the world is useless if you don’t have a connection with the people in front of the lens.
I pride myself on being able to suggest the perfect hour for every location. If we had gone to Villa Rufolo at noon, the light would have been harsh and vertical, creating deep shadows under the eyes. Instead, we waited for the “Soft Box in the Clouds” effect that Ravello provides in the late afternoon. This is how we transform a simple photo into a cinematic memory.
The success of Christian and Val’s elopement was a result of this collaboration. They brought their style and their story, and I brought my knowledge of the coast’s hidden corners and its ever-changing light. Together, we created a visual legacy that captures the essence of their love and the eternal beauty of Italy. It was, quite simply, a perfect day.
