The service is impeccable, the food is Michelin-standard, and the atmosphere is one of absolute prestige.   

On the other hand, we have Masseria Moroseta. Designed by Andrew Trotter, this is the pinnacle of modern, minimalist design in Puglia. It isn’t a “restored” farmhouse in the traditional sense; it is a contemporary interpretation of the masseria form. It is stark white, with clean lines and an emphasis on organic simplicity. Moroseta is about “intentional gathering”—fewer frills, more soul. The focus here is on the quality of the light, the taste of the home-grown olive oil, and the feeling of being in an enclave of calm.   

As your Apulia wedding planner, I see these as two different personalities. San Domenico is for the couple who wants a royal experience; Moroseta is for the couple who wants a design-forward, intimate retreat that feels like a stylish short holiday in Italy.   

Navigating the Sensory Flow of Your Celebration

One of the biggest mistakes I see couples make is focusing only on the “look” of a venue and forgetting about the “flow.” How does it feel to walk from the ceremony to the aperitif? Is there a sense of discovery?

The best Puglian weddings are sensory journeys. In a fortified masseria, we use the architecture to create different “chapters.” We might start the day in a hidden orange grove for the ceremony—the scent of citrus blossom (zagara) is nature’s own perfume. Then, we move to a sun-drenched courtyard for the aperitif, where the sound of a live “Pizzica” tambourine starts to set the rhythm. Finally, the grand reveal: a long table in the main courtyard, lit by thousands of tiny fairy lights and crystal chandeliers.   

In a villa, the flow is more intimate. It’s less about grand transitions and more about a continuous, flowing party where everyone feels like part of a private family gathering.

If you’ve been scrolling through Instagram, you’ve seen the same three or four masserie a thousand times. They are beautiful, yes, but Puglia has so much more to offer if you know where to look. Have you considered the Gargano? It’s the “spur” of the Italian boot, and it is dramatically different from the flat olive groves of the south. Here, you have white cliffs that drop straight into the turquoise sea, ancient forests (the Foresta Umbra), and sea caves that look like they belong in a fairytale. A wedding in a place like Vieste or Peschici feels wilder, more raw, and much more adventurous.   

Or look at the remote corners of the Salento during the “shoulder season.” Everyone wants to get married in July or August, but I will tell you a secret: September and October are the most magical months in Puglia. The light is softer, the air is cooler, and the sea is at its warmest. You can have the most famous beaches, like those near Porto Cesareo or Pescoluse, almost entirely to yourself.   

We are experts at finding these “quiet hours.” I remember a wedding I shot in a tiny village near Otranto. We did the portraits at 6:30 PM, when the “White Queen” legend says the shadows start to move. There wasn’t a single tourist in sight. Just the couple, the ancient stone, and a light so golden it looked like liquid honey. That is the kind of experience I want for you.   

The Traditions That Make It Real

A wedding in Apulia isn’t complete without the soul-stirring rituals of our land. It’s not just about the party; it’s about the connection to the past.

One of my favorite moments to photograph is the “Serenata”. In many of our villages, the groom still comes to the bride’s window the night before the wedding with a band of musicians to sing of his love. It’s spontaneous, loud, and incredibly emotional. Even if you’re coming from thousands of miles away, we can recreate this magic at your villa or masseria as a surprise for your guests during the welcome dinner.   

And then there is the food—oh, the food! It isn’t just a meal; it’s a show. We love “show cooking” stations where local grandmothers (the “nonne”) make handmade orecchiette or where a “casaro” stretches fresh mozzarella right in front of your eyes. This is “Cucina Povera” (the food of the poor) turned into high art. It’s honest, it’s fresh, and it’s a gastronomic journey that your guests will talk about for the rest of their lives.

Planning your wedding is a beautiful journey, but it can also be overwhelming. My advice? Don’t try to follow the “strategic” path or a list of “must-haves” you found online. Puglia is a place of the heart.

I remember a couple who were torn between a massive, famous resort and a tiny, crumbling masseria that only had six rooms. The famous resort was “perfect” on paper, but when they stood in the courtyard of the small masseria, they both started to cry. They could feel the history; they could smell the earth.
